"A stubborn insistence of our own exceptionalism" is certainly a true statement of the times we are now living in. The arrogance and intolerance of things that some do not and will not understand is staggering! Ken Burns is a national treasure on so many levels and we should all listen to him.

I recognized a long time ago (but often forget 🙄) that the more certain I am that I'm correct about something, the more I need to double and triple check my facts, then do it again. I've eaten more crow over being certain than when I thought I was wrong.

Thank you, Rev. Ed! I have been hooked on Ken Burns since his first documentary, "The Civil War." He is very right--as you are--about certainty. People who embrace certainty give up learning, and risk unending disappointment, when things go differently from the way the certain person expected. One of the first things we learn, naturally, is that we are not exceptional, either as individuals, or in the aggregate. We need to give up certainty, and learn about as much as we can..

This is one of my ultimate pet peeves with a lot of the people around me, they either aren't curious enough to learn new things about the world, or they approach everything from their own perspective and pre-conceived ideas about how things are supposed to be. I find these people difficult to talk to, because they already think they know everything and refuse to learn or consider new ideas. I feel the one of the best traits anybody can have is curiosity.
The movie DOGMA had a line about how having an idea is better than a belief. It's less tricky to change an idea. Wars are fought over beliefs.

As I head into my eighth decade, the decline, decay, and eventual death of the body is more certain to me. Family, friends, and classmates no longer with us -- the certainty of loss. To the extent that y'all are lucky, you'll reach this point too.
I thought back to Pirsig's 1974 book, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance." ("An Inquiry Into Values.") In it, the main character reflects on his experiences -- and the assembly manual for a Japanese bicycle he once purchased. (I remember buying Japanese models back in the 60s, and some of the instructions were completely in Japanese.)
Anyway, the bicycle manual started out with this as Step One: > "Assembly of Japanese bicycle require great peace of mind." He was awestruck, and thought it was the best instruction he had ever read.

Hi Rev Ed. I am certain we are not exceptional. I know you mean historically we have thought we were exceptional, and I know there are people who still believe that, but many currently don't. We look at other countries who have healthcare, access to good education, honor of their women, not invading other countries, etc...
Yes, but still in the minority. The Democrats go on and on about "democracy" and being the best country in the world and the GOP with Trump leading and controlling believe America to be rotten now but want the 100% exceptionalism from the past back.
Live somewhere else and you'll realize while not perfect America is the best country in the world .

Well said! The last few years have brought to the forefront, those who would put an end to freedom for all parts and ethnic groups of our country, and limit freedom and power, to only a few. Most of us are not interested in what they are selling.
There are none so deaf as those who will not hear. Burns' valuable message will fall on the deaf ears of those who need the message most. The rest of us already believe what he said to be true and try to live our lives accordingly.
We can continually learn from anybody we encounter, and from the world and universe around us - every second of our day from flowers, clouds and stars to strangers and loved ones.
Certainty is the college professor who always uses the same lecture notes year after year. My approach to teaching was continous improvement, i was always challenging myself to develop better practices to teach my students. Life should be about continuous improvement!!

I think a lot of people have lived such unsettled lives (eg. health crises, economic instability, toxic family situations) that some of them will find Something to cling to as an emotional support object, even if thing they cling to is willful ignorance or money or guns or exceptionalism or conspiracy.
Good insight. I agree. And sadly. there seem to be powerful people who want to keep making those circumstances that cause the unsettling.

Rev Ed. This just struck me because I recently watched Neil Degrasse Tyson & his response to Terrance Howard's nonsense on the Joe Rogan show. Howard is so certain of his uneducated idea that he took the valid critique of a Master Astrophysicist as a personal attack & facts being pointed out as "vitriol" against him. It's a perfect demonstration of what you just said
Thought i recognized the name. had to put a face to it. Rhodes from Iron Man. Never thought he'd go nuts regarding science. To have Tyson go after him, whoopsie! Science isn't perfect, only progress and exploration. However, numbers, different story. Thought I hated algebra, too logical, linear. I still do. Just never bothered to use the math formula, until I was taught by a peer student in a class about how I was trying to figure my finances, and I was blown away I was using algebra in my head. Doesn't make me a math nerd, i just use the stuff. Not certainty, but necessity. Universe too big for certainty. It is what it is, like God is, end of story. However, i'd seen how certain people will rely on religious beliefs entirely, and still get screwed up. Story about a man who hears a flood is about to hit the town and he needs to evacuate. he has faith, so God will save him. Three times he does this. One when a radio reported about a damn breakage, second when a boat came up to his house, third a helicopter, until the man faces St Peter shaking his head at the man. Man wonder why God forsake the guy. Peter answered God sent a warning, a boat, and a chopper. Why didn't the guy listen? Certainty? I'm lucky if I get out of bed breathing and deal with the day ahead. Is what it is.
@@diaryofagrievernamedjohnwe1433 Tyson didn't "go after him" though. Howard sent Tyson his thesis, as a friend and asked him to review it. That's all Tyson did, peer reviewed it like 8 years ago & Howard hasn't spoken to him since. Then the other night Howard went on Joe Rogan's show & said all kinds of bs about Tyson. Howard made it sound like Tyson was horribly mean & totally disrespectful. So Tyson simply pulled out his copy of the thesis & read the notes he wrote to Howard right off it. Nowhere in it was Tyson mean, disrespectful, "filled with vitriol" or "shitting on" the work of other "scientists." And ends with Tyson complimenting the artwork Howard creates from it.
So Tyson was caught off guard by Howard doing this on Joe Rogan since he hasn't spoken to him in 8 years. Howard ended their friendship because Tyson didn't kiss his butt & tell him he was perfect.
Howard acts like the kid who was labeled as "gifted" in school because he was one of the smartest in his town for that age group, but got to college & found out he was barely average when compared to other "gifted" kids & he can't handle it.
What did Howard say? I have seen mentions of this but no real information about what Neil was refuting?

And do not be certain you know that, in addition to God's love for you, that you know God's condemnation of someone else. That person is just as certainly loved as you are.

One of my least favorite impressions about religion and the religious is the annoying sense of certainty that they seem to have about everything. Leave it to Reverend Trevors to flip the script and preach against certainty. Happy father's day padre.
We are creatures of emotions and instincts first, but that is no excuse to bind our intellect to notions of certainty because they appeal to our emotions and instincts. We didn't get here by not asking questions, even when we were sure we already had the answer!
It's good to explore the ideas behind beliefs that are counter to our own, with the open mindset that we may be wrong. It may also help us to understand our own beliefs more clearly.
Proverbs 12:1 says, "Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but whoever hates correction is stupid."

I'm not certain, but I know where forward is and that the answers don't lie behind us.
All things are impermanent and fleeting - and we rarely if ever see or know the real reality. The best hope for some semblance of stability comes from those compassionate, servant leaders with a strategic vision for the future with the love, generosity and humility to invest time and patience teaching that vision to others. Thank you, Rev. Ed for being one of those leaders.
In an address to Cal Tech graduates, Richard Feynman said, "If you’re doing an experiment, you should report everything that you think might make it invalid-not only what you think is right about it: other causes that could possibly explain your results; and things you thought of that you’ve eliminated by some other experiment, and how they worked-to make sure the other fellow can tell they have been eliminated.....I’m talking about a specific, extra type of integrity that is not lying, but bending over backwards to show how you’re maybe wrong, that you ought to do when acting as a scientist. And this is our responsibility as scientists, certainly to other scientists, and I think to laymen."

What's bad is ideologies, basically collective thinking that's sold to the masses, which is inherently corruptible. But organized religion works precisely the same way as political ideologies.

Very important message. Thank you. Certainty can take the place of reality or reason as when people will not budge even when actual facts are presented. It’s not healthy.
What you said seems so contrary to the public face of Evangelical Christianity and Conservative Catholicism (and others) in today's world. They think that one of their greatest strengths is the unshakeable certainty they are proclaiming....I agree with you that all real faith is a humble faith.

exactly. the only certain thing is love of God. because he is perfect. anytime anything is ours, it is uncertain because we are fallible. certainty in ourselves is not only ignorance manifest, it is far worst. it is arrogance before God.

I think this will be one of my favorite talks. IF, and that is a big if, if one has an interest in other countries, cultures, and approaches with an open mind....this can be a cure for the false sense of exceptionalism. I suspect what drives "exceptionalism" is fear of not really being good enough

What are the Fundamentals if not ringing statements of absolute certainty. Certainty about that which they have no right to be certain about. Penal substitution? Anselm of Canterbury, a thousand or so years after Christ, who came up with this, must be very pleased with the influence he has exerted.
This reminds me of a paper I wrote long ago… In it , I suggested that “perfection” is a paradox…
Most of us consider “a perfect state of being” as “Godlike”… A condition without boundaries. Omniscient, omnipresent, and omnipotent…
Yet if we know everything, we have nothing left to learn. If we are everywhere, we have no place left to discover. And if we can do anything, we can no longer grow.
Those sound an awful lot like boundaries to me…

Quite frequently, as I challenge a young earth creationist with words in support of evolution, their fallback position is that the Bible is 100% accurate or not at all. Their 'certainty' of the creation story is unwavering. It doesn't seem to matter that I concur that Adam and Eve existed, just that there were other humans before them. Folks that are "certain" that God wrote the Bible, rather than merely inspired it, hold us back. And they make science the enemy at a time when we need it most just to survive.

Have you pointed out to them that there are TWO creation stories in the Bible? Which one is the "true" one? And if the Bible is 100% accurate, what does it mean that it has so many things within it that contradict each other? (I've been watching Mindshift here on CZcams a lot, he's an evangelist of 30 years who no longer believes, and points out the inconsistencies that made him not believe, among other things--it's a real eye-opener to study the Bible this way).

Actually, I put very little stock in the Bible's versions of "creation" as it reads like a Readers Digest version of a much longer story. I agree that the Bible has quite a few contractions in its accounts.
My preferred text is The Urantia Book, a divine revelation written by celestial beings. It's far more consistent with scientific thought as to how the Earth came into existence, escaping the Sun's gravitational pull when a passing star helped liberate a solar extrusion, producing the planets as we know them today.
It goes on to explain that Adam and Eve were biological uplifters, sent to our planet to be a king and queen from God, for all the evolutionary people already on this planet. Here to up-step our biology to make us smarter, more resistant to infections, and inspired by 8 foot tall beings with a violet hue to their skin to worship the Creator on the Central Isle of Paradise.

I'm sure it was a good speech but the sermon on it was, I think, wide of the mark.
Certainty is a condition neither good or bad of itself; it matters greatly what one is certain ABOUT.
Being certain is only bad if what one is certain about is wrong.
Since we can't know when that happens, we have an excuse for Doubt.
THAT'S what saves us from blunder, that, and being a little open to evidence that things might not be all they seem.
M. Scott Peck thought there were three kinds of people: sinners whose consciences bothered them, people - psychopaths - who had no consciences, and people who devoted themselves to getting the better of their consciences. These were the ones who practiced certainty with an effort. Peck called them People of the Lie.
See, their certainty wasn't the innocent kind where you just don't know any better. Theirs is a contrived certainty, imposed with a will to explain away doubts and conscience.
None are more certain than evangelicals. They are certain they alone know the bible, know the god of it and his will. Funny that their god happens to share their bigotry and hate.
Certainty is proving to be the downfall of America. I'm British, born to parents who lived through WW2. I now live in Washington State. In the UK I worked for the US Air Force alongside active duty coworkers. Most Americans are so ethnocentric. The culture here leads them to believe they are the greatest in everything. They are an ego driven culture, brought up to believe they are the greatest nation on earth, and to conveniently ignore their weaknesses and frailties. There is no such thing as "the American Dream.". Life is what you make of it whever you live.
This ethnocentrism has led the majority of Americans to become totally apathetic to voting, and the political process. 30 percent is a good turnout for a vote. As such Americans have been lulled into accepting the status quo, believing that democracy and their perceived standard of being #1 could never change. So like ostriches with their heads buried in the sand, comforted by their false sense of security and certainty, evildoers have been working behind the scenes for decades planning the demise of the nation. Then came Trump. What was covert suddenly became overt. And even now, after all that has and still is transpiring to erode democracy there are many who are "undecided" choosing to believe the unthinkable could never happen here. The fact that Trump and Biden are so close in the polls defies logic. What happened to all of this patriotism and "land of the free" rhetoric? Trump tells his followers daily they are just being used so he and his cronies can form a dictatorship. You'd think that would wake them up. Yet now his followers have placed their certainty onto a fake messiah that threatens to not only bring America down, but destabilize the entire world. Anything but certainty in our Jehovah God and Lord Jesus Christ is foolishness.
Reverend Ed, you're a good man, despite your religiosity. Your attitude suggests that you've applied your moral sense to the Bible and drawn from that book the lessons which enable civilization to exist. If more "Christians" saw things as you do, I'd be less of an anti-theist; but alas, too many are intent only on "following orders," and pick from the Bible whatever serves their interests, or rather serves what they think their interests are. 😞

I'd really like Rev, Trevors opinion on one thing.
Numbers 15:35, “And the LORD said unto Moses, The man shall be surely
put to death: all the congregation shall stone him with stones without the camp.”
I only pasted the one part but does that mean that people shouldn't pick up sticks on the Sabbath or that people shouldn't work on the Sabbath? If either is true does that mean that all people who do anything on the Sabbath are doomed to hell?
If so what about Priests and what about doctors, fire, ambulance, police. They all work on Sundays and are necessary for society to function properly. They "pick up sticks" after all.
Sorry if my question seems rude I don't mean it to be. Why I'm asking is because some, not you as you are a good guy but some use certain passages in the bible to promote homophobia and some evangelicals have suggested they would like to see gay people get executed.
Neither in my opinion is correct but an argument can be made that if you are in favour of killing queer people than you are also in favour of killing people who work on the sabbath.

@@MG-ot2yr People who believe in God have evidence; it just isn't tangible. We feel God(s) in our soul and see the divine in our world, and like every other subjective experience, it still constitutes our reality.
Reality is a slippery enough notion - don't suppose that because God(s) can't be proven that believers have no evidence.

Even courts differentiate between types of evidence (demonstrative, circumstantial, testimonial and et cetera).
Subjective experience is more than "feeling," and it absolutely constitutes evidence for belief, if not persuasion.

I understand its message of less arragoance in the positions we have about things would lead us to greater wisdom and understanding. But in the same breath,'certainty in a number of aspects us also foundational to my Christian. For example (and by no means is thus list comprehensive)
I am certain that.
- God is my Creator and creator of all that I consider is heaven and earth.
- I am certain that Christ is God's only begotten Son and that Christ's two commands of us Christians is serious business"
- I am certain that Jesus was human who's spirit was Christ, who was a perfect human, and the One which I must emulate.
- I am certain that my biological mother and father lived me greater than they love themselves. And for that matter
- I am certain that I live my children in the same manner my parents love me..
- I am certain that we humans co-exist with Satan on the rock called Earth

"Yin" is female. If you're looking at a tri-gram, it's 3 broken lines versus the 3 solid limes for male. Of that, I'm certain. Also, covid was developed in a lab. I point that out because it is among other "conspiraces" that have evolved from theory. I agree we shouldn't be so certain about our beliefs. But that applies equally on both sides.
At the moment both sides believe in fantasies.
The Left believes in an utopian fantasy of their own making that does not work.
The Right believes in a glorious empire fantasy that never existed.
By including the remark "both sides". you show your disdain for EVIDENCE and your misunderstanding of science and how it works. Science continually ASKS QUESTIONS. Einstein questioned Maxwell. Maxwell questioned Newton. Do you see? Humans constantly are on a QUEST - we want/need to know - bit by bit. And so, we "rise up and walk" as it were.

The idea that covid came from a wet market was laughable to me from the beginning. The purpose of the lie was political, and they are free to continue lying as long as you accept propaganda as actual science.

Jeff , Your certainty of Covid’s origins tries and fails to disguise your fear and hate of an uncertain world. A world that can be malevolent to human life at times. And a universe that has at its core feature an unremovable uncertainty. That you cannot eliminate. Yes virus can mutate and evolve and Nature can make us extinct. There is no certainty here. Here there be dragons.

Our devotion to religion is a bad thing. Stubborn faith is exceptionalism. Is God a certainty? Certainly not! The 1st commandment makes all those that follow it dubious at best. The presence of our masters? Give me a break. Ken Burns ought to do a series on religion and what is certain and uncertain about it - what it is and what it isn't - he could title it Religion and Reality.
One of the fruit of learning is you can't be certain because the more you learn the more you become aware of how much you don't know. Ignorant people are certain they know everything.
The proof of the truth that you speak is your channel's low number of subscribers and the low number of views this video has received. Truth isn't as seductive as falsehoods.
I myself believe in constant learning. Reading up.on facts. Doing research to see if that is the truth being said.
