  • Big thank you to Lollipop for my new thumbnail layout! Check out her art here - / lollipopkerboom
I'm doing things a little bit differently for this review, namely I'm going to be comparing two versions of Donald Duck: Goin' Quackers rather than concentrating on one game - the PS1 and PS2 versions. I've probably missed out some important details and the review isn't as good as I would've liked it to be, but I hope you enjoy it all the same!

    ABOUT THE GAME
Donald Duck: Goin' Quackers (known as Donald Duck: Quack Attack in Europe) is a platform game developed and published by Ubi Soft for various consoles and Windows-based personal computers. A different game with the same title was released for the Game Boy Color, as well as on Game Boy Advance, the latter being given the title Donald Duck Advance. The game's reception was mixed, with reviewers praising the music, backgrounds and animations, but criticizing the short length and its aim to be played by a younger demographic.
Goin' Quackers's gameplay is very similar to that of Crash Bandicoot, and requires the player to move through various settings in 24 levels in four warp rooms. The four level themes are Duckie Mountain, Duckburg, Magica DeSpell's Manor, and Merlock's Temple. Donald Duck has to dodge various enemies and obstacles throughout the levels and defeat bosses at the end of each warp room. There are also bonus levels where Donald Duck has to outrun a bear, a truck with an evil face, a ghost hand, and a statue head, respectively. The viewpoint of the levels can change between a 2D side-scrolling perspective and a 3D perspective. Re-doing the levels in order to defeat Gladstone's time in same, gives the player advantages in the game.
The player has four lives that can increase by finding special items. Each life gives Donald two opportunities to be touched by the enemy; the first time is touched, he becomes angry and throws berserk to the enemies, the second time, he loses a life. Donald can also unlock new outfits, which alter cutscenes and idle animations (such as Donald taking photos of the place if he is dressed like a tourist).

When I was a kid I played the pc version, and I always assumed Gladstone was wearing a leg cast because either A: "He was faking it as an excuse why it wasn't him who rescued Daisy." or B: "It was because Donald beat him up after every time trial to get the outfits."

As someone who played the PC version non-stop, it has the graphics and pace of the PS2 version with the level design and challanges of the PS1 version. The Magica boss and final boss are completely different(With the last boss being a rip off of a Rayman 2 boss, which you should play BTW!)

On the PS2 version of Goin' Quacker, if you can make a big enough jumping combo (I think it can only be achieved in 1 level but I could be wrong) and then you do a special moves, all the gears are replaced with lives instead for a short amount of time.

The PS1 version's ost is rather amazing. The way the songs are divided into different loops so the music can feel like it is progressing along with the level was a rather ambitious idea with.. mixed results, but the music's overall produced and composed impressively well. And yet the composer apparently only ever worked on this one ost and nothing else, unless they were using an alias.

I agree with the "version negatives" you talked about: the controll on the ps1 version are less reactive than the others, while, on the other end, the ps2 more powerfull tecnical artstyle with less defined items borders (and an hitbox slighty too big for most items) makes it a bit difficoult to do precision jumps around damagin itmes
also, I used to have the games back them (actually, one mine, one my cousin gave me for safekeeping when he moved and never asked back) but I emulated the ps2 version to play it more easily a while back; the intro cutscene worked, but the final one ended after a second and a half

For some awkward reason, Bernadette has been 1 of few bosses in a video game I keep thinking about throughout my life. I didn't find her hard at all as a kid, but I still love the concept of hers. A giant chicken mother who sends her newborn children to take out their mother's lunch for her and the mother tries to crush you butt crush you.

For some reason I remember this being one of the very first game I successfully emulated like 15 years ago ^^;7
Makes you appreciate how solid the Dolphin emulator is in comparison to so many other ones that handles 3D.
I'm pretty sure my younger brother also owned this game back in the game but that was for the Game Boy Color.. Apparently he wasn't a fan.
The game also reminds me a whole lot of the Lilo & Stich: Trouble in Paradise game, and I suppose the Lion King game on PS1 as well
I always thought that Merlock died by the end of the Ducktales movie, but I suppose they did point out that he was immortal.. So I suppose he just broke everything in his body instead of dying. He did lose his amulet though so I have no idea how he got that back?

@@ToridoriGaming The PC version feels like a hybrid of both PS1 and PS2 versions; it has the really colorful color scheme, but it obviously looks better than the PS1. It also had music tracks from the Dreamcast version(which were basically the N64 Midis but upgraded/arranged). The fights against Magica and Merlock were also altered drastically. All in all, I'd say that that version is the one that fixes all the complaints you had about the PS2 version, as the Hub was more like the PS1 version(but obviously looking much better), however, it did lack the special things that the PS2 version had, such as the gears, the whole "SPECIAL" system and some other things, mostly because the game itself was closer to the PS1 port.
I'm not sure if it works on Windows 10, though. I attempted it and I wasn't able to get it running, but apparently it still works on Windows 7 and prior versions.
      Hope that little explanation helps!
