    ABOUT THE GAME
Dog's Life is an action-adventure video game developed by Frontier Developments exclusively for PlayStation 2. The game allows the player control or interact with over 15 dog breeds each with distinct traits and abilities. They handle things in a different way, that can also be used in challenges or puzzles.
The game is divided into three areas: Clarksville, a rural town; Lake Minniwahwah, a ski resort; and Boom City. These are then divided into smaller areas such as districts or farms. In every area are humans willing to give missions in exchange for bones. Bones can also be found buried underground or hiding somewhere. Bones are used to increase your stats, which will make it easier to complete missions.
Certain smells picked up through the game's "Smellovision" will activate challenges against a local dog. In each small section of the game there are four challenges, two of which are to find eight smells of the same colour and compete against a local dog. These missions include races, obedience trials, tug-of-war games and a territorial game where the player must run around urinating in marked areas to obtain territory.
There are also salons in some levels where Jake can get his coat cleaned and brushed. He also gains a shiny new collar with a silver 'J' at the front.
Once these dogs are beaten, the player is able to take control of that dog and use their special abilities to find other bones. Other challenges include scent-collecting challenges, and a mini game called "Doggy Do", where the player must copy the moves of the local dog. There are also dangers in certain areas, such as the dog catcher and his Doberman. The player must also keep the Jake healthy by feeding him, allowing it to defecate and coax people into giving the player snacks by growling and barking or performing tricks unlocked by doing the obedience trials. Jake is able to do a range of tricks including begging, sitting, lying down and marking his territory.
Dog's Life received "mixed" reviews according to video game review aggregator Metacritic. Eurogamer found the game amusing, but felt that it offered little for experienced gamers, being aimed at a younger audience. They praised the game's "warm sense of humour" and "cute visuals" and found the idea of controlling a dog to be "actually quite cool".
GameSpot said, "There's not a whole lot to Dog's Life, but what there is entertaining enough, and it certainly lets you do things you can't do in just about any other game." GameSpy called it "a nice change of pace" but found the game bland and considered it to be aimed more at younger children than teenagers.
IGN called the gameplay "simple and well-executed", but noted that the visuals "look like the game was ripped from a PSone title" and that the audio seemed "all over the place." Charles Herold of The New York Times called the game "fun but forgettable. I was expecting something more: the feeling of complete and utter admironishment." In Japan, Famitsu gave it a score of one eight, one six, and two sevens, for a total of 28 out of 40.
According to the Guinness World Records Gamer's Edition 2009, Dog's Life holds the world record for the most video game voice-overs recorded by one person in a game. Kerry Shale voiced 32 characters from the game.

That dog pound hellscape really traumatized me as a kid, especially since it was very easy to accidentally trigger the level as you were exploring the previous one I LITERALLY WAS NOT READY FOR THAT also the big machine gave me nightmares and the random criminals that can SHOOT you did something to my innocent young european mind

fr tho I quite fondly remember playing this at my grandma's place. It had turned evening at that point, I was still just chillin' in the big city fooling around. Then I made it to the final area, heard the music and got chased by the Dobermen and I could not handle that. I slinked into the corridor to the living room and begged her to come play it with me (she was used to playing and had a thing for horror-games so it wasn't a problem for her). But hot dang

I loved messing around on this game as a kid, just pretending to be a dog. No matter how awkward the game was in hindsight (especially the constant toilet humour), I still give it props for giving the player a lot of options for simply being a dog. The last level scared me though; I hid upstairs while my dad finished it for me.
Also, did you notice that the parrots you come across in the game will say quotes from sci-fi shows and the mean lady in the town shop occasionally steals from the til? I thought they were some interesting details.

Back then, in town there was a place called Gamerz, he stole me a Scooby-Doo and the Cyberchase, and Spyro 2 and 3 for the ps1. I laughed so hard at this game. Throwing poop at people, pooping on people, barking at people. Yea... Now the bad game design is what I laugh at. Characters floating, cut and pasted characters, weird character movements, etc...

I first played this game in a PS2 Demo disc that I got with the console. It was next to Jurassic Park Operation Genesis, Jak and Daxter, Conflict Desert Storm and my absolute favourite Dark Cloud a game I SOOOOO wanted when it came out. However like you my parents failed to find it for almost 3 years, and when I got it I was around 9. I remember loving it though struggling a bit because I was a impatient kid, but looking back on it I can see how forgiving the game was. It prioritised being fun over being overly challenging, as I just played the game and breezed through it in around 5 hours as a adult. The game is not hard but its a fun game and functions well as to what many early PS2 games were in the 2003 era which were what I call tech demos. They were arcade games ported over or they were made to showcase and take advantage of the hardware found on the PS2.
And oh my god am I glad you bought up the ending. I was so freaked out by the dog pound I didn't play the game for a month. It was so creepy and a full 180 degree turn in tone. The music still sends a chill down my spine.
I will say to anyone reading this the game is worth a play. Its not overly challenging but its a unique game with a okay game loop. Its worth a pick up if you can get it cheap from a second hand store. I would recommend it though this is largely nostalgia. But if you want a quirky early PS2 game its a good example of the wild early days of the 2000 era of gaming: not a perfect example, but I guess that's why it would stand out.

@@ToridoriGaming I bet LOL. This reminds me a little bit of another ratings situation. When the first four Ratchet & Clank games came out, 1-Deadlocked/Gladiator, they were all rated T for Teen. When the HD collection and the HD version of Deadlocked released in 2012 and 2013 respectively, they all were re-rated E10+. E10+ didn't exist until 2005. Maybe Dog's Life should've got an M rating? 😂

Great review, I've only recently just did my own two part review of this game, though my style is differrent to yours (my style follows that of Spoony I guess lol). You talked about things that I talked about and you touched on things that I certainly wanted to cover but I think if I did, my review would have ended up in 3 parts. This too was a game I begged mum and dad to get for me back in 2003 for Christmas, so seeing someone else with that similar connection it gives me comfort lol.
Also your capture settings are way better than mine. I'm jealous haha. Mind you I'm still working out the best settings with what I have (I used the PS3 cable that comes with the old Elgato game capture).

I thought it was notoriously difficult to emulate with all the weird visual glitches, or at least that was my result when I tried to run it, also Vinesauce Vinny had the same result and a couple of others. Still, it doesn't look that much different from the real thing, it looks better haha.
But yeah... I understand the cutting content thing and wanting to stick to a timeframe. Even when I cut stuff down it ends up being bloody long in the end. lol

I was five and don't quite understand English when I played this game (I absolutely LOVE the game)
I didn't have difficulty in completing mini missions, I figured out the walking on ice part quite easily, the only one that I didn't understand at all was the sleeping bandit and the thief who would shoot Jake. The part that I really gave up was the time challenge. I could not do any of time.
I did figure out that you can get treats if you are clean and do tricks in front of pedestrians (and also on the gambling machine :P), and that if Killer chase you, you can just run towards the "exit" and the chase would be over. The kitty retrieving part was a little annoying at first but then I realised I could just put them in the "pen" next to the door so they won't have enough time to walk out of the house if I go get another kitty.
The only annoying part is the ski slope part. I have to slide down dozen of times to catch the scent in the slippery ice and I have to risk Jake getting dizzy.
I managed to get to the scary dog pound one, it did scare me a lot and I was not quite ready for it, but I still did it. Unfortunately I was not allowed to play the final part because my mum hated games and believed I had played too much. I only got to find out the ending many years later on CZcams.
I want to play again, just to ace it and revisit childhood.
