In my 50s I’ve never listened to a ‘boy band’ in my life, and Queen in the 80s is the closest I’ve ever come to fully ‘stanning’ an artist. BTS is special! One of the things, this song on the surface as a stand-alone is just an update pop song about being in love, but it is part of a deeper story/theme across three albums! This is typical of BTS’s music. Their genre and music style goes waaay beyond pop, too. Many songs are pure hip hop, they mix in occasional EDM, ballads, neo soul, some songs which defy genre-labelling, … and every song has something to say.

72-yr old American female here in Texas. I’ve experienced DECADES of music and appreciate most all genres, being a musician myself. BTS is extraordinary in that they have managed to merge existing genres and even create their own. I never really got into “boy bands” per se - actually found them a bit boring. The more you discover about BTS, the more you will understand why they have made such a tremendous impact in the world of music.

56 year old BTS American ARMY here. I hear you, I have never been a fan to the level I have with BTS. before this, Queen, and artists like Taylor Swift. Artists that have something to say, that are good people in general. My daughter introduced me to Blackpink, and I started listening to them. They are talented, but I resonate with BTS's message more. The song that made me ARMY was Black Swan. I tried K Pop in general and I couldn't vibe with other groups, but BTS is something different. They go beyond being a K Pop boy band. They are amazing performance artists. Borahae 💜

I'm 53, and most of BTS's fandom is 20-70yr olds! So it's not about looks per se, it's about who they are as human beings first of all. They are genuine, humble and authentic artists who write, compose and produce their own music with messages that resonate with people of all ages. I gave up music years ago because I couldn't stand modern lyrics and the bubble gum type of songs today. Until BTS came along quite unexpectedly. Let me tell you NOT to make the mistake of thinking that these young men are just a 'pop' group. Vulture have said they are the successors of Michael Jackson (yes, you heard that right) than any other artist. Although likened to the Beatles as well. They are making history and with their discography of over 300 + songs in every genre they can't be labelled as K-Pop either. In fact, their early days were hip hop, but their music and style matured into what we see today.
I'm going to drop some info on you guys, it's long but easier to put in one place. Hope this will help you out and do take the time to do more reactions. As rap fans the rap line (RM, Suga (as in sugar) and J-Hope) are real MC's (not sure what that is if I'm honest but heard another rapper call them that) so worth your while looking deeper.
When you want to find out more about the group:
Who are BTS? Please do watch them all as they will give you a different perspective of BTS and their history, one isn't enough to get the full picture.

These will give you an idea of who they are and why ARMY (Adorable Representative MC for Youth) love these young men so much! Also Army have no problem with length of videos, we love to follow along and watch your journey. Army will step in to help as long as respect and genuineness is shown. There will always be those that are not genuine Army and some antis will pretend to be to cause division and strife. Just ignore them, Army are a bunch of lovable encouraging people when they sense that someone really wants to get to know our boys. With ages ranging adolescents (even babies!) to mid 70's from all walks of life and backgrounds you are in good hands!

Also for an explanation of their MV's Bookish Theory is a good source. Also DKDKTV explanations given by a Korean that us foreigners might miss.
Always watch the MV's to the end! It might be a good idea to ask Army for links for the best performances..... some are not as good as others.
They also have various versions of their MV's and songs, from the official MV to remixes (B-sides done for Army) and live performances. Dance videos for their choreography can be found at Bangtantv and behind the scenes videos. Just depends how far you want to go, there is a lot. The MV's have a storyline attached but that is better saved for a time when you might want to get to know the members more.
Lastly to avoid any copyright strikes just show the Big Hit/Hybe logo at the beginning of all their MV's.
NOTE: THE WORD NEGAE MEANS YOU/ME/I - not the word you think! Some misunderstand so best to get this out the way!
Songs: TAKE NOTHING AT FACE VALUE!
Earlier years to recent. Some early albums are rather political in focus (more hip hop), against the harsh school and work system in S Korea and the views of elders/media etc against the younger generation who don't have a lot of hope of making it even with hard work (S. Korean kids have one of the highest suicide rates in the world, from 10-19yrs old. They study up to 16 hrs a day!). BTS's whole Mission Statement is to stand up for the youth and the underdogs so to speak, also notice the writing under the Big Hit logo (updated recently so see the early MV’s). At this point in time it was suicide for anyone to speak out against the Govt as they would be blacklisted/banned etc, so their courage at such a young age when they'd just started is amazing. Never mind the hatred and disrespect they got from the industry as outsiders as they came from a small company and not one of the Big 3 K-pop Co's. They responded and still respond today with their music. This will also explain their great love for Army and vice versa (Army also disrespected) as they were the only ones who had each other’s backs since day 1.
Also they don't have traditional 'love songs' as such. It may appear so on the surface but the message goes deeper, however there are some like War of Hormone which are exceptions to that etc. Mild lyrics regarding teenage boys reactions/feelings to girls and that set off a storm with the haters. Since then they have never sang 'love songs' like those in the West, thank goodness!

actually no, NOT similar: no other boy bands have had rappers, let alone who can RAP Rap, and no other boy bands had such an elite level of complex choreo, and no others have rapped/sung WHILE doing intricate choreography.
If "superficial capabilities" is referring to singing and dancing, then it's better to just say singing and dancing in order to not mislead?. I could not disagree more that other boy bands have similar capabilities. So I guess then "non-superficial" capabilities would be their artistry/production and deep lyrics. I know this bc I'm familiar with BTS' greatness, I think maybe you should maybe reword things for newbies?

You just scratched the surface of bts it's like a whole world when you start looking into bts, most people listen to them because of their music first of course but stick with them because of their message because their music and lyrics saved a lot of people's life.
Also it's okay if you didn't like this song because they have songs from every genre and since you're a rap fan there's a fun fact about bts: they started as a hip hop group since the first two members were from the underground hiphop in Korea and the third member to join was a street dancer and became a rapper so anyways you will find A LOT of rap songs in their discography.
And lastly each member of bts has solo songs and half of them have their own mixtapes while the other half are preparing for their own, they release their solo stuff and mixtapes for FREE on SoundCloud as gifts to their fans , which by the way is called ARMY.

  • @mccadd86

Thank you for the reaction. I have to strongly disagree with the "bandwagon" comment. I got into BTS and K pop organically. I'm a 35-year-old woman from the south side of Chicago. I heard 5-10 seconds of "Boy With Luv" (Suga's part) and was intrigued. Heard a snippet of "Dynamite" from a Samsung commercial and that was enough. I became hooked. I spent over 12 hours straight the next day or so just listening and watching their content.
No one around me...I MEAN, NO ONE AROUND ME LISTENS TO BTS, LET ALONE K-POP. It's about having an ear for different music. I've always listened to artists who people I know would have never given a chance. I'm talking Third Eye Blind, Creed, Linkin Park, Elton John, The Beatles, Queen, etc...
BTS are EXTRAORDINARY artists. The looks, language, and lyrics are just a few amazing things. Then let's also sprinkle in their personality, hard work, their humility, THEIR STORY. These men are far from any American boy band. I loved N'SYNC growing up, but there is no comparison (laughing hysterically). 🤣🤣🤣
Are BTS attractive? Yes!!!!!!! Is it the reason why we're ARMY? NOOOOO!!! How they look isn't the reason why we're fans. Do you know how many ugly people I'm a fan of? 😏🤣
They love the hell out of us. How many artists do you all listen to care about you? How many of them credit you with 50% of THEIR success? BTS is different. These 7 individually talented men are a different breed of artist. N'SYNC had Justin Timberlake. BTS has BTS. All 7 hit hard and all 7 break records individually...while still in a group.

Kpop gives people a sense of belonging. The reason why it’s blown is that the community consisting of loyal fans go the extra mile to stream and make sure their idols win awards. Kpop very heavily emphasises on the idol fan system every group within the industry has their fandom names, fan chants, light sticks that have trademark colours for individual groups etc. but what draws people into Kpop is the creativity in MVs from the choreography, fashion, storytelling, and addictive melodies not only that but the way Kpop groups interact with their fans by using different apps, creating tv shows, fan-signs etc. this is all to showcase their personalities and to entertain fans

I appreciate your honest reaction! To be honest, I used to think similarly to you guys until not so long ago. I can't speak for other groups of kpop because I don't really know them, but BTS is really something worth discovering. Their discography is HUGE and it's insane how diverse they can be, obviously they have songs that are meant to be more "pop" and that have romantic aspects to them, but they also have a plenty of songs that go beyond that.
It's totally ok if you're just interested in seeing the lyrics and production of their songs instead of the dancing, MVs etc. But it's good to know that those have a big role in the whole industry of kpop, once it developed through television instead of radios. So the dancing, visuals and aesthetics of their songs and MVs are kind of like a package and they're made to complement each other. In Korea the kpop industry also receive a lot of criticism because lots of groups don't actually have artistic freedom to make music with messages that are genuine. But even when having a lot of rules to follow, BTS always had this freedom to talk about subjects that they really care about, even before pre debut days. When you stop to see what they actually have to say and how hard they work, it makes sense for why they have such a giant fanbase.
    Recommendations:
    > The documentary the Rise of Bangtan (It's great to see how they have started and what are their thoughts about all the process of creating music and practicing etc.)
    >Spring day MV and the explanation by italian army (it's heartbreaking, but this made me gain so much respect for them.)
    >UGH! And a explanation video (Explanation videos are essential if you want to understand their rap songs, once a lot of them have plenty of complex korean references.)
    >Blood, Sweat and Tears and a explanation video. (I LIVE FOR THE SYMBOLISM)
    >Black Swan
    >Lie
    >Stigma
ok I'll stop now . Anyway, that's it! Stay well! 💜💜

BTS is consisting of three rappers and four vocalists. And all seven of them are excellent dancers.
If you guys like rap, you came to the right place. They do a wide variety of music, but basically they are rooted in hip-hop.
I recommend We On, Jump, Mic Drop, Cypher 1-4, Daechwita(Agust D 대취타, Suga's solo), Ugh, Interlude : Shadow, DDAENG, Outro : Tear.
All seven members are participating in making their songs by writing, composing, and producing them.
BTS is from a small company that almost went bankrupt, so they have been very looked down and hated by Korean broadcasting stations and other K-pop fandom. So they have struggled from the beginning to prove themselves.
You guys started BTS with DNA, but this song actually has a storyline.
I think it would be good to follow the story line.
DNA: Joy of fateful love → Fake Love: Realizing that love was a lie → IDOL, Epiphany, The Truth Untold, Answer Love Myself: To love other people completely, you should love yourself first.
These are included in Love Yourself Trilogy.
The lyrics of BTS' songs are based on their own experiences, and their albums are organic because they contain their growth narrative.
It will also be fun to listen to their albums in order and analyze them. :)
If you're interested in BTS' MVs, I recommend....
    Mic Drop
    Blood sweat & tears
    FIRE
    On kinetic manifesto film
    Black Swan
    Save me→I'm fine
    Daechwita(Agust D 대취타, Suga's solo)
All of their music videos provide English subtitles. :)
Their lyrics are very deep and beautiful.
They make a wide variety of genres of music like Hip-hop, Ballad, R&B, pop, EDM, etc. I'm sure there're quite a few of their 300 songs that suit your taste. :)

Oh, you guys want solo songs!
All BTS members have unique voices and singing styles, it's not boring when they sing as a group.

They have quite a few solo songs, but I chose only one song each only with my taste.

      RM - Seoul
      czcams.com/video/F8wI5ZosdRA/video.html

      Jin - Epiphany
      czcams.com/video/fep7x8N4EUc/video.html

      SUGA - Shadow

      czcams.com/video/PV1gCvzpSy0/video.html

      Jhope - Just Dance

      Jimin - Serendipity
      czcams.com/video/ejR5zKaPZ0g/video.html
      czcams.com/video/BEMaH9Sm3lQ/video.html

      V - Singularity
      czcams.com/video/p8npDG2ulKQ/video.html

      Jungkook - Euphoria
      czcams.com/video/cgGZInK2l64/video.html

They also make unit songs. :)

      Rap line(RM,SUGA,Jhope)
      Outro : Tear
      czcams.com/video/L7hZ8Z9sM38/video.html
This song was made by BTS member Suga around 2018 when they were considering disbanding.

      Vocal line(Jin,Jimin,V,Jungkook)
      The Truth Untold
      czcams.com/video/CCsZVW1Y1GM/video.html
They all have different personalities and different talents, and they seem to combine like cogwheels to create the best balance and synergy. :)

Please react to BTS - ON, kinetic manifesto. I think you guys will love that one. BTS isn't a regular boyband like the ones we have in west. BTS has 3 rappers and 4 singers and they stretch over several genres of music . Language is no barrier for music as we can watch video with subtitles and after reading the lyrics once you can after hear the song and know exactly what it is about. Saying that language is a barrier in 2022 is bs imo. I love the huge versatility of BTS. Some songs are pure rap songs. Judging them after one song is pretty ignorant. You haven't even scratched the surface of what BTS do yet.

I was NOT into boy bands at all before and I come from a rock/metal background but K-Pop isn't just your typical Weastern boy bands. They have amazing choreography, so many different genre's mixed into one song and so much personality and talent. Of course their good looks are definitely a plus and draws people in including me but that's not what keeps people coming back for more, at least most people.

I really respect your polite honesty. That being said I’ll demonstrate mine as ARMY. I think the ‘bandwagon effect’ you cited has a tendency to go both ways. I know cuz it happened to me. Two of my lil ARMYs were on it well before me and because they were and all I ever heard was BTS, I refused to be on it. Then one day, a video I’ve seen a million times came on (DOPE) and I got hooked by RM’s opening invite and haven’t looked back. See I think people may refuse to get on the bandwagon BECAUSE everyone else is but it is important to judge the artist for what they are, not for what everyone else thinks they are. I admire that y’all are keeping open minds. I saw your other reaction vids before this one so I saw your progression a little backwards lol. I’d love to see you guys watch an intro vid to BTS and who they are and where they started. You see, there’s more to why we are ARMY than just their music and style. We love everything about them: their personalities and willingness to share their best and worst moments with us, their message and love they have for us. That being said, I hope you can understand the backlash you got when you brought up the whole bandwagon thing. It kinda hurts to hear that about someone or people that we ARMY truly care about not just fan over. Looking forward to your journey and more reaction videos and thank you for being so polite and honest 💜

There's actually a huge range that BTS has when it comes to fans, they've got fans of all genders in ages around 60. What BTS does that attracts those people is talk about heavy topics and have huge morality and just how humble they are.

What is wrong with bandwagon though? You check out what is trendy and end up genuinely loving it. Maybe they are just really talented, maybe they serve in multiple aspects? You just saw a single video about K-pop or BTS but already with the hurried conclusions.
It is only bandwagon when it is K-pop, you never thought about the modt popular artists in the US right now?
That middle guy's opinion is straight-up an argument of ignorance of having the only reason of bandwagon, hence why the others are like confused on what you mean by that and try to give more possibilities why they could be popular.

The impact Kpop has is huge. Each person has their reasons for liking Kpop. It's really the work these artists put into their careers, dancing, singing, rapping, stage presence, etc. Many artists from the U.S. do not put as much effort into dancing or music videos, or as perfectionist with their production. BTS is not only famous for their looks or how musically talented they are, They advocate for mental health, self-love, and the strength that comes when rising from defeat. I understand that the language barrier is an important aspect when connecting with music, but what I do, personally, is I watch a video with subtitles to know what the song is about first. This helps me in the future when I listen to the song again I'll have memory for what the song was about. At the end of the day, music has been known to bring people together and Kpop has done that, at least from what I have experienced, Koreans and Non-Koreans bonding.

I think you should dig in more about them and later you understand why they are globally known in all range of age. Other Army called JMJMJ explained clearly and gave details about BTS. Pls check it out.

There’s so many different things in kpop from amazing choreography’s vocals, idol rappers and even just rappers to songs with amazing messages. I think that’s what makes it pretty cool. There’s so many groups and solo artist within the category and they always come out with something different. I think it’s amazing how we can always expect something different from not all but many different kpop artist. There’s also so many solo artist too. Of course kpop might not be your cup of tea and that’s fine. I just hope that if you are interested then I really recommend to check out other kpop artist if not other songs from Bts. Thank you for the reaction ☺️

Well, thanks for honesty. Its true i am woman but i am 32 and western boy bands were never my thing. But k-pop is diferent. The amount of work that goes in it is insane. BTS is my main group but i listen others too. Btw DNA isnt my favourite either. My favourites are Baepsae, Dionysus and Louder than bombs and every one is wastly diferent. Try some rap songs from rap line people suggest. Or if you wanna strip it to voices, i recommend Room Live they did on 8TH aniversary. Its medley of B-sides from main albums from 2013-now. I think that will give you idea about how diverse they are. And most of my favourite songs are B-sides anyway. And btw yes, they wear contacts. They dye their hair and wear colorful clothes. Its idol fashion in Korea and many western audiences dont like it and make fun of it. Thank you for not being insensitive and rude about it. Greetings from Czech republic. 💜💜💜

Hi and welcome to kpop and BTS! I am new to your channel. I like the honest feedback. I would like to say I've been on my kpop journey going on 5 years and mainly a BTS stan. My observation with people who first listen to BTS is they want to relate everything to English and they want to be able to read the lyrics as they go along watch the video and listen to the music and yeah it's hard to do! 😊. I would recommend with any K-Pop even BTS, listen for the music, the cadences, the rap flows, beat drops for the first run through. If you like it then start looking for the meaning behind the songs and the visuals. For the 5 years I've been in kpop / BTS. I want to generally know what the song is about. However once I find that out and no longer matters cuz I just listen to the music for what it is. Yes, BTS Army is primarily female however 30+ percent are men. Women and men of all ages are part of the fandom. I hope that you're able to dedicate more time to them and their backstory and they're beginnings. Because that'll help you understand more of why people love them and their music. Their personalities are just fun they don't have a stick up there you know what because they're famous. I am Army mom because I am a mom and I'm in my late 50s. I can give you any kind of genre music that you want. They have way too much content for anyone to try to consume in weeks or months. Enjoy! 💜

Personally none of my friends like Kpop and I’ve been a fan since 2017… I’ve been a fan because I took a deeper dive into their music and read the lyrics. They put a lot more into the performance and production than wester artists so I also really liked that too.
If you want to react to more I recommend:
    Dweatchita MV
    Singularity MV
    Black Swan MV
    Life goes on MV

maybe try their BTS room live, for a small taste of their huge versatile discography... its a chill session, no choreography or overwhelming visuals, just singing, rapping and song productions.. its a medley of 8 songs from 8 different albums in celebration of their 8 yr anniversary since debut... 💜 but if you want rap, maybe start with the cypher series from the BTS rapline and end it with the cypher medley live performance for the cherry on top..😉

BTS fans are very diverse in age and gender. The music is what attracted me from the very beginning. Their lyrics has meaning. If you're into their music, then there is no language barrier. Also, if you're into their music, you would take the time to see what they're singing abou naturally. Once you get to know them as people, that's the part that keeps the fans there and support them. The looks iare only a bonus part, not the main reason we love them.
Since I see in the title that you're rap fans, you should check out their rap/hip hop songs. There's three rappers in the group and they all also have their solo mixtapes, besides songs together under BTS. Check out UGH, DDAENG, Outro: Tear, Cyphers 1 - 4, and many other songs with rap in it.

Thanks for reacting to BTS! BTS is something special, they dance, sing, produce and write their songs, they play instruments...and they started as a Hip Hop group. BTS is a genre, they have most types of music, they just don't focus to Pop. They have a lot of songs...a loooot! This is just one song of BTS 😁 Their dance practices are out of this world. BTS is a really hard working group and they have a very funny personalities. That's the reason that we love them, not just their music but their personalities as well. New Sub here for BTS, we'll be waiting for the next reaction. Maybe you could react to Introduction to BTS by Ida S., Xceleste and The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, an Intro to BTS to learn mo about them. Thanks again.

A big solo artist in korea is DEAN, hes got a lot of good music. You should watch Bonnie and Clyde by him and I'm not sorry by him and Eric bellinger. My favorite soloist is probably WOODZ, hes extremely diverse, he raps and sings in a lot of genres. And for a female artist, try Jessi. She was raised in the US so her music is very western. Try Drip by her and Jay Park.
