  • Every year we do a coast to coast cycle tour in the summer with up to forty six teenagers. They carry their own gear and cook their own meals on single burner stoves. July 16th 2023 will be the 6th coast to coast ride with students. We have done the Hadrians Wall route, the Way of the Roses route and the Lake District route. One year we did the Way of the Roses route backwards and the students did the Dales Three Peak Walk on their penultimate day. They do this ride to raise money for their school. You can donate here.

I like to do a recce of the route as we normally stop at different campsites as the days we have to complete the trip varies each year depending on when we close for the summer, so we end up stopping at different campsites.
Also every year I do a ride with some sort of cycle tour with friends, this year we thought we could just do something easy and combine the recce with our normal trip in the Easter holiday.
We were fortunate with some beautiful weather. It is a lovely route, hardly any cars. I would recommend this route to anyone that is wanting to get into cycle touring. It is really good because it is low traffic and the gaps between villages and shops is small. Also it follows a railway line so you can always bail out. We get the train to the start and back again from our trips and there are good railway links at the start and end. If you travel to the start by car you can always get the train back at the end.
I would prepare yourself for the litter and fly tipping on the last 10 mile stretch from Newcastle to Tynemouth. It is completely disgusting and shocking. It does not give a good representation of the cycle route, but probably gives a good representation of the state of the country at the moment. Once in Tynemouth things get better and you can enjoy some nice cafes, bars and ice cream by the Castle.
Bicycle shops: You have shops in Carlisle and Newcastle. But as stated above a train line is not too far away.

Hi the campsite in the thumbnail is closed at the moment. But if you look at this map with the points of interest turned on I have put on some of the accommodation I am aware of.
