  • If it ain't broken don't fix is a motto that Xbox is taking with the controllers as we look throughout the iterations from each console launch. Xbox looks like they have another winner again with minimal changes.

    The break away cable was a requirement by certain territories - per XGM- like Japan- that classified the xbox as a children's toy and it was heavy enough to be required to have a break away cable (like an input device), so that this device was not pulled onto a small child's head. This was common with many consumer electronic devices, much like a grounded pin per UL, not sure if this was required here in the states, but would it be silly to have two different versions

    • @vaguedreams
      @vaguedreams Před 3 lety +17

      No, just no. It was designed that way as it was a common enough complaint back then. The break away cable, the Duke controller, the extremely long cords on the first generation Xbox, those were all things western gamers (the duke, specifically the people in Seattle that they used) wanted. By comparison the PS3 weighed in at 11lb and I don't know one wired controller with a break away cord.
      The break away controllers also snapped off very easily. I don't know how many times my older consoles were dragged across the carpet growing up becuase someone tripped over the cords.

    • @jaysmith9683
      @jaysmith9683 Před 3 lety +5

      @@vaguedreams Are sure that's not speculation though? I mean, if I wanted to speculate, I could suggest that the PS3 which used USBs may have been tested for it's inherent resistance to breaking away, and thus was found to detach simply enough, without necessitating an actual specific breakaway mechanism, at the specific cross-section of time where this was a regulation for that period only.

    • @vaguedreams
      @vaguedreams Před 3 lety +4

      @@jaysmith9683 No they stated as much back in the day after it's US launch and the, well, overwhelming amount of negative feedback they got on the original xbox controller.
      They went on a massive design binge, bringing in tons of local gamers. Hell, you could just sign up and come in if you were in the area. The Dreamcast controller was well received and was rather large as well which may have played a part in it.
      In the end, they released a controller pretty much designed for you average north western american college student.
      I seem to recall there being an issue with the manufacturer of the controller also, as well as nationwide focus groups being ignored but hell, it's been what, almost 20 years? we aren't going to be perfect. I was thinking about driving up to Seattle from San Diego to take part in it if I got the ok.
      Also, the PS3 usb plug in was short, using a longer cable and someone tripping over it resulted in it being dragged or worse yet, the port being damaged on the controller or the controller flying out of your hand if you weren't holding it tightly as it didn't have any weight to it at all.

    • @PSWii360onBaSS
      @PSWii360onBaSS Před 3 lety +2

      So I'm guessing the PS2 and GameCube were somehow exempt from this? The GameCube controller was fantastic, bit that cable was too short and my sisters GCN was always tumbling to the floor, same with my brothers PS2. My xbox never moved.

    • @vaguedreams
      @vaguedreams Před 3 lety +2

      @@PSWii360onBaSS I think he was going off of weight and to be fair, bothe the ps2 and the game cube were light weights compared to the XBOX and PS3.
      The ps2 in particular was all sorts of sexy looking, but not particularly heavy.
      U really like the break away cables and want more of them honestly. I used to be really into fighting games so wired controllers for the win. And it would be nice to have like a 10-15 foot wired cable for controllers with integrated batteries.

    I bought one and noticed you didn't mention:
    - The Bumper mould has changed. It's now matte and better shaped.
    - The Trigger mould has also changed. It's grippy, corners are less rough, and it's also matte.
    - Trigger Rumble already existed on the Xbox One controller. It's only a mild improvement between generations.
    - Dpad is great, not "too crunchy", perfect once worn in.
    - Coloured ABXY buttons exist on the most popular SKUs (like black) for both generation versions.

    Another problem with Sony is that Lithium can go bad if you let a controller sit for a long enough time (depending on storage temperature and battery percentage they can go bad in 8 months easy).

    I am fairly confident that the vast majority of xbox users use the rechargeable batteries, the fact that you CAN still use double As is purely for convenience at this point just in case you lose your rechargeables or something
    Usually how it works is people will have one or two rechargeable batteries, the people who have one Usually just keep it in the controller forever and charge it when need be, but the people who have two get to flip flop between them when one dies, the put that one on the charger and put the other charged one in your controller, ultimately making it so you'll never be stuck to a cord

      the option to have the ability to use AA or a rechargable is just superior to a integrated pack, its just an objective fact.
      the integrated pack is awful in 2 ways you need to make sure you plug it in each night when your done playing so its back at full charge when you are done playing and.
      Worse eventually that pack will be so depleted it will no longer hold a charge forcing you to spend the 60-70 Dollars to buy a entirely new controller and if you are constantly gaming thats going happen in about a year. so have fun spending almost $100 on a new controller each year just because of the stupid battery, compared to a controller that takes AA's or a rechargable pack,
      you only spend MAYBE $10 a year for new rechargable batteries/pack.
      nothing would piss me off more then to in to a gaming session and then having to stop because "SHIT i forgot to plug in the controller last night and only have an hour worth of charge".
      with the xbox controller and my 8 rechargable batteries i have for $10 its just less then a minute swap when i see the "Controller batteries are low" pop up. and i continue playing.
      i will gladly take a controller or device that uses external batterys over a internal/entegrated battery pack any day of the week.

    I almost wish that he mentioned the Dreamcast controller here. The Xbox controller is clearly inspired by the Dreamcast controller: the position of the thumbstick, dpad, use of triggers, expansion slots on the controller, etc. I think it might have been a bit of fun to shout out to the DC controller even if its contours weren't great. The Xbox controller S is like a DC controller but more refined, with good contouring.

      That is actually because SEGA and Microsoft already have a good relationship back then, like including Windows CE inside the Dreamcast. But because of Dreamcast bad sales, SEGA almost went bankrupt and then finally sold their console division to Microsoft.
      That's why OG Xbox design has some similarities with Dreamcast, especially the OG Xbox controller. Bulky controller, memory card slot, and no shoulder trigger button.
      I don't know why Microsoft just put a big Xbox logo and not a VMU slot instead, which is actually would be really cool if Microsoft continues to improve it, rather than scrap the thing. Console controllers maybe would have a display on it if OG Xbox controller put a VMU on it.

The gyro is really good, like for racing games, aiming if you're not used to controllers as much. Few more gimmics such as "rgb" lights, touchpad and a speaker, that with haptics feel kinda good.

      Really? I have never heard anyone call it anything other than uncomfortable and numb, but to each their own. Personally I find it digs into my thumb more than some others, and it is a bit mushy, though vastly superior to the floaty Xbox 360 D-pad that's almost impossible to get accurate diagonals with (for me). My current favorite is the Xbox One D-pad, because it has a nice clicky response to it, and the solid + shape is easier on my thumb than the split form of the DS4. Some D-pads from history do have it beat, but that's almost irrelevant at this point, though shoutout to the Neo Geo Pocket Color's clicky directional control.
      My ultimate gamepad right now though would have a mixture of aspects from the current 3 major ones. The thumbstick internal mechanical bits from the DS4, but located like in the Xbox One S pad, and with the Xbox One S external thumbsticks (hate the domed top of the DS4 sticks), the clicky D-pad of the Xbox One S, the touchpad and built in battery of the DS4, the rumble and motion controls of the Switch Pro pad, the overall shape of the Xbox One S (larger, more substantial handles), triggers of the Xbox One S (with an added button press at the end of travel), and shoulder buttons more like the DS4 (I find I accidentally hit the Xbox One S ones more). The face buttons are a toss up between Switch Pro pad and Xbox One S, though I'd love to have 6 face buttons, kinda like the Sega Megadrive pad had...
