Unfortunately, idiocy prevails. If you ask Zaira, Ana Vidovic, or Rosie Bennet, they will tell you about the idiots they have to deal with on a daily basis. I wonder if those idiots gave me the 7 thumbs down.

      Miguel,
I know this is a year late, but instead of looking down on a piece like Classical Gas ( which I think is a nice finger style pop tune) and the person who ask about it, perhaps you can use it as a gateway to other classical guitar music. You could reply , "yes I'm familiar with Classical Gas. If you like that, check out Wild Mountain Thyme or Jubilation / Sunburst. And if you fancy that check out Asturias and Toccata and Fugue in D minor ( BWV 565) on classical guitar. " From there you can suggest Bach Lute and Violin Partitas, Tarrega, Barrios and Dyens.
I always thought that the Progressive Rock artists from the 70s were big in the increase of popularity of Classical and Jazz in the 70s. Someone like Steve Howe from Yes plays Mood for the Day. He's asked who influenced him when he plays a "classical" piece and he says Julian Bream, John Williams and Andres Segovia as well as Flamenco guitarists such as Carlos Montoya and Paco Pena. His other influences in Jazz were Wes Montgomery, Tal Farlow and Barney Kessel. Country was Chet Atkins and Jimmy Bryant. I can't tell you how many of us "Boomers" used this as a gateway to check out these other genres.
Stravinsky, Bartok, Copland, Sibelius, as well as the usual suspects such as Bach, Beethoven and Mozart influenced these Prog Rock bands such as King Crimson, ELP, Yes, Jethro Tull, Genesis, Gentle Giant, etc. In turn we checked out this music.
Classical Guitar was at its most popular in the 70s to the early 80s. Obviously Segovia raised the awareness of the classical guitar. Bream was obviously a charismatic player. I would argue that John Williams, arguably the greatest classical guitarist ever, had much to do with expanding interest in classical guitar. He had no issues playing with others outside the classical world. He played with Pete Townshend from the Who, played Movie Scores and for 5 years played in his on Progressive Rock band, Sky, which enjoyed a fair bit of success. Many in the classical music community scoffed at Williams for wasting his time. Instead these critics should have welcomed it as a way to reach out and welcome more people to listen to classical guitar.
Williams, obviously has been a critic of Classical guitar instruction ( and Classical music in general). The reliance on playing the classics and the focus on technique with little attention to improvisation are some of the criticism leveled. But, the appearance of the classical snob who looks down on everything not classical (Jazz suffers from this too) is a turnoff.
Both Jazz and Classical each represent 1% of total music sales. It used to be better than this. Weather Report, Brubeck, Miles Davis, Mahavisnu Orchestra and Pat Metheny had gold and / or platinum records in Jazz. Williams, Bream, Parkening and Segovia had albums that sold greater than 100,000 copies. That's no more. Today, outside of a Russell, Vidovic, Vieaux, Yang and a a few others who can play in front of 500 to a 1000 or more playing classical guitar, most are teaching or playing at a coffee shop.
There has to be a better way to bring people into the classical music world. Not looking down on people asking can you play Classical Gas is one of them.
By the way, Tommy Emmanuel and Doyle Dykes are tremendous guitarists. As for Glen Campbell, before striking out on his own, he was an A list studio musician with the famous "Wrecking Crew." The "Wrecking Crew" was a group of session musicians in Los Angeles with either a background in Jazz or Classical who were renowned for their versatility, virtuosity and sight reading skills. It was not uncommon for them to do a session with say the Beach Boys, Frank Sinatra and a Movie Score all in the same day.
      Anyway, like your channel.
