As a computer repair tech, I can tell you that washing your motherboard is absolutely fine as long as you let the capacitors discharge their charge... And make sure that it is COMPLETELY dry before you apply electricity to it. It's not electronics and water that don't mix, it's ELECTRICITY and water that don't mix.
I had a job doing that for a time, but we had an alcohol sink we soaked them in after cleaning them.

@@bolinha0 depends on the design of the pcb. some are auto-discharging. some you need to short the capacitor leads with a conductor.
@bolinha0 Short the two terminals with a screwdriver or something similar. They can shock you if you use a finger, so be careful.

TLDR: Yes, water is fine. Unplug all cables, take out batteries, make sure capacitors are discharged. Rinse with demineralized/deionized water and dry it really well after.

Long story:
18 years ago I had a job where I had to clean all kinds of electronics with water. It was a company that would get called in to help salvage furniture and appliances after you had a fire by the fire insurance company. Wash out soot, sometimes do small repairs, else send it off to a more specialized repair company. If really broken, report it to their fire insurance to have it replaced.
Background info on the process: take electronics apart, make notes of any scratches or damage, make sure batteries are removed & capacitors discharged, wash with regular water and special soap (should easily remove soot, but not be so aggressive it affects the components), then rinse with demineralized water, put in drying room for 48h at 45°C/113F, put device back together and test, repair if broken.
The process usually wasn't what broke a device. That usually happened when fire hydrant water got into the house while stuff was still plugged in or still had batteries. I think we actually were able to save about 95%-98% of the stuff, unless the device had actually been on fire or right next to it.
My department did anything electronic you can think of in your home: PCs, TVs, sound systems, curling iron, dishwasher, tumbledryer, alarm clock, etc. Another department I didn't work at would do anything non-electric. While the house was empty it would get repaired and cleaned by yet another team. The residents would be booked into a hotel if they had no family to stay with. Finally we return all the stuff after repairs are done and the insurance company pays for repairs/cleaning/replacements, etc.

The pc washing thing is doable just have to make sure the capacitors are drained and you try it with some compressed airafter
You can wash your pc parts in lukewarm water with a mild detergent, it will not harm the componenets in any ways IF you have removed the cmos battery beforehand. Electronics will only short out IF they are powered when a conductive substance (like water) is on them. IF you are going to wash your PC parts it is best to use a dishwasher on the cold setting, dish washer detergents have an ingredient in them that helps prevent metals from corroding and can extend the lifetime of your parts. BUT you must make sure they are completely dry before powering them on or placing batteries back in them(like a CMOS battery). The best method for drying PC parts in this manner is compressed air, air pump blow dryer on cool, big ass fan these will work but give it several days before using and even them inspect each part first.

We would have competitions to see who had the most difficult to open present. I made a circuit to copy a gift card stripe onto a piece of VHS tapes with double sided tape on it stuck to the inside of the corrugated part of a cardboard box wrapped in four rolls of duct tape in another box inside a box of concrete with zip ties embedded in it to keep it from breaking open too easily. The box with the gift card stripe in it also had three other smaller boxes inside of it to trick them into thinking there was more to unbox for another couple layers in each one. Once the strip was found one simply had to stick the VHS tape to the unused part of a gift/credit card or driver license to use it at the store and I kept the original gift card just in case the strip got damaged during the often quite vigorous unboxing attempts.

Actually you can wash circuit boards, as long as there isn't any current running trough them and you ONLY use demineralized water (it doesn't conduct electricity, tap water, that has salts and minerals conducts electricity more)

That thing with the multi-layer packaging... i actually did that to my best friend several years ago. only i used really weird shit like gorilla tape, foil, plastic wrap, garbage bags, and a few other things.. Every layer i had a page with the troll face wearing a santa hat, with some taunt. All told, it was like 6 boxes, and a shitload of layers, all to hold a single pair of socks. It took him something like 20 minutes to unwrap the damned thing, he nearly pissed himself a few times, from laughing. i'm pretty sure he still has the socks.

You can actually wash the motherboard like that. As long as you dry it completely before connecting power to it, you'll be fine. I've actually fixed liquid damaged motherboards that way. :P isopropyl alcohol after the rinse will help with the drying process.

Funny story bout this one; I was in 9 or 10th grade and it was art class, usually we get to do whatever the hell we want after we finish a project, like play games and stuff, and my friend showed this exact thing he saw to the art teacher because she saw us laughing in disgust about it, and it was the best reactions of a teacher I’ve ever seen.

many years ago I did a multi layer gift like that with twice as many layers as that for my sister's 18th birthday. inside I put a note that said the real gift is taped underneath her chair.
You may not believe this, but yes, you can wash a motherboard that way. You can even use a dishwasher... you just cannot use the heated dry cycle or chemical drying agents like Jet Dry... additionally, you should store it in a ziplock baggy filled with rice for at least 24 hours after drying to ensure that all moisture has been removed completely. Prep goes like this:
1. remove motherboard
2. remove all components (cpu, ram, etc)
3. wash with your method of choice in hot mildly soapy water
4. rinse very well
5. dry till it is visibly dry
6. place in bag of uncooked rice for 24-48hrs
7. reinstall
The board will be just fine.... and now clean as if new.
