      @TFLT How well do you guys think this transmission will hold up as compared to the toyota's transmission? I've heard past Nissan's transmission would not do too well in really hot temps. Would you think adding an AT cooler will possibly fight this problem? Also, when will you do a head 2 head battle against other trucks in hott weather conditions? I think that would be great. thanks

  • @billywill903
    @billywill903 Před 2 lety +237

    I really don’t see what the problem is when you have a vehicle that does everything well. I would much rather have an all around vehicle than the “ best towing “ when I tow something a handful of times and it’s not going to be over 6k or the “ fastest 1/4 mile “ when I don’t race. Just give me a solid truck without a bunch of gimmicks that will break in 2 years.

      I agree. That said for me the lower fuel economy on this is about all that would keep me from getting this truck. The lower tow capacity and everything else is not a deal breaker but if I want a good all rounder it may as well have good fuel economy.

    Nissan's towing capacity is never "class leading" but if I tow the maximum limits on the Jeep Gladiator and Ford Ranger, those trucks feel VERY sketchy at those max weights, whereas the Nissan maxed feels stable. Additionally, while also not being class leading in fuel mileage, that proven V6 is cheep and easy to work on as opposed to any new engine you're dealing with expensive repairs/maintenance with turbo chargers and super leaned out engines chasing that "class leading" fuel mileage.

    I have a ‘22 SV model with the crew cab and 5ft bed.
    I’ve towed a Hyundai Elantra on a tandem axle (Uhaul) car hauler from Florida to Pennsylvania. In ever scenario, the truck surprised me. The engine braking in tow mode is surprisingly useful, it felt confident towing “heavier” weight on the highway, the acceleration was plenty to maneuver around in traffic, and the fuel consumption was expected (11mpg @60mph. 8mpg @75-80mph). When main thing higher speeds, it wanted to stay around 3,000 rpm’s to maintain speed with the heavier load.
    I consistently use the truck to tow a tandem axle utility trailer for a UTV, ATV, and dirt bike. Including the bed filled with extra gas, gear etc…running around 3-500lbs tongue weight depending on the load. With this tow setup (around 4,000 lbs and 300lbs in the bed) the truck is able to cruise highway speeds(60 mph) at 2,000 rpm’s, only to downshift for inclines as expected.
    Overall, the new frontier has really surprised me in it’s “truck stuff” capabilities. The ONLY reason I’d get a different truck is if I need interior space. The backseats get the job done, but if I’m bringing a group of adults out to go riding, they don’t have leg room. They could also drive themselves, so that’s an incident specific “red flag”.
    Just installed the Redarc TowPro brake controller. VERY easy to install. Plug and play harness available for new model frontiers. Excited to test it. Just wanted an extra bit of braking if I were to trailer in the snow and general peace of mind. I don’t intend to tow anything higher than the promoted tow rating of the vehicle, as equipped stock with no brake controller.

    For those people who know and appreciate real trucks, this Frontier is unbeatable. It does everything very well, and is the best tow vehicle in its class. The engine is great: there is no replacement for displacement. Unfortunately for Nissan, 90% of Americans buyers are addicted to style and acceleration, and use their trucks 95% of the time as a grocery getter. So, the 'jack rabbit' turbo competitor models garner greater sales. But these competitor trucks fade quickly when towing, and doubtful will last 100k miles without major repairs. To capture some of this group, Nissan should not have cut a few corners. The Frontier should have standard: no hard plastics anywhere in the cab, but especially none around knees and elbows; auto adjusting headlight beams; telescoping steering column; integrated brake controller; a larger info screen with higher resolution. Or at least give some of these as options. I hope Nissan will include these items in future years. Lastly, increased payload and towing numbers will also attract more buyers. Maybe the Frontier should have 3 models: base, light, turbo 4cyl, quick, few frills; the Pro4X; and a new HD 4x4 model with increased payload and towing numbers. ?

    The surge brakes that I've worked with ARE adjustable and they are NOT just off or on. There is a heavy coil spring that has an adjustment for setting the force at which the master cylinder starts to apply (based on trailer weight). There is also a damper shock to keep it from applying too hard in a panic stop. Yes, an integrated brake controller is better, but the surge system is definitely better than no trailer brakes at all.

    Surge brakes are not "On or Off". The braking force is proportional to the forward load on the hitch. Stop harder, the trailer moves forward on the activiation linkage farther and compresses the master cylinder on the trailer brakes farther. The harder you stop, the greater the braking force from the trailer brakes.

      @@inyourfaceqcface6468 Cant wait to replace your 2010? Huh im actually the opposite. Ive got a 2008 SE 4X4 crew cab long bed with 356,000 miles on it and was planning on driving it at least another 200 thou but sadly someone ran into the side of me and their insurance company totaled my truck out. Luckily my truck really only had cosmetic damage on the entire passenger side and is still fully mechanically sound so I bought it back from the insurance and they cut me a $4600 check for the difference between its totaled estimated value of $6800 and the buy back price of $2200. I am sad though as I love my Frontier and want to be whole again but its probably not worth fixing the damage at this point so Im going to have to look for a new truck for business uses. Im thinking I might actually just get a low mileage 2019 similarly spec'd to my current truck as its been such a Great truck imo. And thats coming from a guy thats previous truck was a 1st gen 2001 Tundra limited 4X4 access cab which was also a great truck but imo my Frontiers been a more reliable, powerful, useful, and fuel efficient truck. Nissan is a few standard features away of satisfying the critics. Adjustable trailer brake control ( can be put in), locking differential on all trims and storage bins in the floor. They definitely stepped up to the plate. See what is available in the next couple of years. A V6 accelerating uphill with a 5000 lb plus boat, that’s impressive. They didn’t include the actual trailer weight. So, the 3.8 maybe underrated…hmmmm..
