  • Control IQ Software in the Tandem t:Slim X2 insulin pump has officially been approved by the FDA in the United States!
    I've been using Control IQ for the last few weeks now! In this video I give you the inside scoop on all things Control IQ - especially compared to Basal IQ, and also the Medtronic 670G insulin pump in Auto Mode.

    So, so excited!
    Hubby just got a new pump... his old one (first pump) was 4 years old and pre-Basal IQ,
    So much change we are headed into!
    (Just need to order G6 now, still on G4)
    Thanks for your update!

    Thank you so much for posting! I’m 35 weeks pregnant and have sometimes been struggling with overnight highs, although most mornings waking up around 100-130(if not high). I’m currently using the basal IQ and really appreciate it as a whole it has prevented many lows thereby preventing spikes afterwards. However I do dislike that it stops a food bolus and many times my BGs have been elevated after meals due to delays in food insulin or me not realizing that the pump stopped the bolus in middle of delivering a dose. Hoping to get the Control IQ as soon as possible! Looking forward to the next video as well. Thanks again for your informative and relatable content!

    I got the control IQ included on a pump replacement due to a pump malfunction so I'm about 2-4 weeks ahead of schedule in my transition. I really appreciated this as all I had to go by in setting it up was the Tandem video since I managed to get bypassed for training. I'm up, ready, and running after 2 days of MDI, so happy to be back on the x2 and even more happy to be on Control IQ instead of Basal IQ. I'll keep following so I can keep learning!!

    Hi Danica,
    Thanks for your video! I’ve been diagnosed with type one diabetes for 17 years now and in the last three years I’ve been using the Freestyle Libre sensor system. I still take injections though. I guess I’ve just been terrified with the idea of a pump attached to me 24/7. It was the same way when I started using the Libre sensor. Now I love it and would never want to go back to finger sticks. Ironically, last week my doctor sent me home with all of the literature for the tslim X2 and the Dexcom G6. Your videos are helpful in my decision to switch to a pump. Still comparing cost differences though. it’s a big deal or should I say a big step for me in switching. Thanks again, you are helping a lot of people with your videos!
    Keep them coming please! 🙏

    So excited to start this! Glad to hear some of the smaller changes, like putting the LOAD on the the first page, and stopping the ANNOYING BEEPS when loading! It meant that I could no longer reload my pump during a church service where I play music, or in any public place that needed quiet like a library or business meeting. It was really bad! Without getting to try the new Control-IQ yet, I'm already wondering if lots of us might want more control over picking the parameters. I'd rather have a smaller window than 70 to 180, and a lower goal of around 100, rather than 110. But looking forward to getting this going!

    • @barbguillory4577
      @barbguillory4577 Před 4 lety

      Well that may be what Google says. I thought Medicare covered my Dexcom G5, and was told by the people I get the G5 from that Medicare now covers the G6. I just have to ask for an upgrade when the G5 transmitter is expiring. My problem is that Medicare did not cover the Medtronic 670G pump. So I pray it will pay for the Tandem. The Medtronic is still under warranty, but since Medicare did not pay for it, am hoping it with be ok with the Tandem. Thanks for looking it up. Google's info may have been from a while back.

    • @Cerus98
      @Cerus98 Před 4 lety

      Barb Guillory - I doubt they will approve any new pump while your current one is still under warranty.
      That is traditionally how all insurance providers operate when it comes to approving pumps. Even though they didn’t pay for your 670 it doesn’t mean they’ll overlook your warranty status and approve another.
      While the auto mode may not have worked well for you, a pump is a pump and that’s all insurance really cares about. Your 670 will work just fine as a pump to control your T1.

  • @brianzionts-bernstein8609

    I have been using the Medtronic 670g for almost 2 years with the Guardian 3 CGM. I have been miserable with the Guardian 3 because of its inaccuracies and the horrible number of fingersticks I must do for both the CGM and the 670g Auto-Mode. I am switching to the Dexcom G6, which I just received in the mail yesterday. I know this will mean I will no longer be using the hybrid closed loop system on the 670g, but the fact that I will be able to minimize the fingersticks will be great. I have been doing 7 - 12 fingersticks a day and my fingers are sore. I am also considering moving the t:Slim X2 as soon the insurance will cover it. Thanks for all the information about this pump.

    Hello, I just commented on your video from a year or so ago so please disregard my questions which have been answered now since I’ve seen this video. Anyway, after you read the comment I left on that video you will understand what I’m saying below as follows: I really loved hearing your persnickety‘s about the Tandem Control IQ system.
    I especially loved your contrasting it with the system on the Medtronic pump because I am on a certain insurances where they won’t give me the current pump but they will only give me the previous model pump from Medtronic. So I feel like it’s a slap in the face to them from all the diabetes users like me who cannot get their current technology but we can with Tandem. Thank you Tandem! And **** you Medtronic!
    Well, I just wanted to say hello and thanks for the videos again, so I’ll get down off of my soapbox now and leave it at that! Take good care, ~Antonio

    I love the idea of this. My son has moved from the Medtronic 670 G to Tandem as of 10/2019. I can't nicely describe how much we hated the 670 G. Tandem has been a nice improvement. The thing that most upsets us is all the alarms. He rarely gets a good nights sleep due to all the alarms. One particular annoying alarm is that the Dexcom loses its signal with the pump. Do you struggle with that? When you said there are more alarms than before with control IQ it made me wonder if my son can handle more alarms. The job that control IQ is doing sounds wonderful. We haven't found that we can turn off alarms too much. They are mostly built in.

      @@Cerus98 Oh really? That's not any update I got. I still have the dreaded beep beep beep every time I need to load a new site. Now I'm just waiting for the prescription process to finish so I can get Control IQ.

    • @Cerus98
      @Cerus98 Před 4 lety

      Elinnea - I’m almost positive it was changed in the separate update. Does your pump still have words on the navigation buttons like “save” or are they all icons like check marks and X’s? It also added an option for a security pin (like cell phones), combined all alerts into one spot and other menu tweaks.
      Noticed it when we went in to request the Control IQ update which we could request separately. This one didn’t require a RX. Just a short 20 min training video and then got the code to update it.
      The control IQ also requires the same 20 minute training video in addition to its own 40 min one. I guess for anyone who skipped the separate update and went right to Control IQ.
      I’d also recommend calling Tandem and sticking it out waiting on hold if it’s been a week or two since your Dr sent back the RX and you can’t start the training videos yet.
      Our Dr approved my wife’s update and sent it back the next day but over two weeks later it still wasn’t ready.
      Hold times are around 30 mins but it was worth it. Took them 5 seconds to see that the script was already approved. They moved the update process along and the training videos were immediately ready. After those were done the email came with the update code.
      It’s option 1 then 2 and then 1 again (wait for the prompts) if you call their direct # 877-801-6901. We opted to stay on hold instead of leaving a voicemail. Figured they probably had tons of those already. You’ll have to do it during their normal business hours though as it routes you to their inside sales department to check the status.
      It’s also worth logging back into the t-connect portal website if you haven’t for a while to see if you can continue the process. Emails don’t always get sent out when the RX is approved.

    I am extremely impressed with the design philosophy, particularly the issues addressed and the data and equations necessary to tackle those issues.
    I have built a number of computer models myself concerned with predicting the future. After seeing the 33-minute video, I slapped my forehead and said: “Dang! I could have written that algorithm myself." Unfortunately, I did not have the plenary data you guys have.
    Whenever I finished a model build or a S/W build, I always had a list of “Model Enhancements” which was an itemized list of the things I would have incorporated had I more time or money. Do you have a list of model enhancements?
    Good job, guys. Keep up the good work. I and my pancreas can hardly wait.

    I have a kind of weirdly specific question about Control IQ. When you have an extended bolus going and it predicts a low and suspends your insulin, does it cancel the rest of the extended bolus? With Basal IQ I noticed that it would cancel my extended bolus and I ended up in the 200s and 300s because of it. With certain foods, I really rely on that extended bolus to help keep me in range and I havent felt confident using it with my Basal IQ on...

    Thanks for the info, it was a great review! I am interested in two pieces of information for your next video. 1) If you accidentally under bolus for food, at what point does the control-iq logic kick in to correct? Once it simply predicts your BG will be to high given and your IOB is not enough to handle it or after the full two hours for the food bolus has cleared? 2) As a T1D dad to a adolescent with tons of growth hormone the max basal rate is of interest to me. Have you been able to figure out how that is calculated?

    • @Cerus98
      @Cerus98 Před 4 lety

      It will predict changes up to 30 minutes in the future and adjust from there. It will always be working to keep you in range.
      The max basal is based on the TDD you enter during setup which you can view from the pump history.

    My Endo brought this new pump up. I used a pump for about eight years (Animas and Medtronic). I have better control with the pens. AIC ranges between 6.3-6.7. Can't see the advantage, much less the hassle. Have used the Dexcom on a trial basis, and unless you are stable, the lag will always be there. In the end, I will stay tether free or until they do some serious stem cell work, but that wouldn't be profitable though would it? Good luck with your journey!

      @gastrogal5353 Před 4 lety

      Could you please explain what you meant when you said that the Dexcom will have a lag if your sugars are not stable? I thought the purpose was to get the sugars under control by using the CGM. If you have the time, I would love to hear your answer. Hope your day goes well and I look forward to hearing back from you should your time allow. Thanks!

    Nevermind.
    Basal IQ software does get replaced with Control IQ. Control IQ is able to slow basal if it anticipates, within 30 minutes, 112.5 mg/dl as well as cease basal below 70 mg/dl.

      This is the greatest pump ever. I was trying to lose weight by watching my calories but because I was not eating very many calories I was dropping low more often. I would then have to eat calories that stopped my goal of weight loss. With basal iq it is suspending insulin so I don't get low. I am able to eat less calories because of this. I've lost 50 pounds.

      @@Cerus98 We can't have people controlling their dosage like they do every single day with MDI. That would be dangerous.......lol.

    • @Cerus98
      @Cerus98 Před 4 lety +1

      Underdog Rising - Actively controlling vs letting a pump do all the work are two entirely different things. User error will happen. The range is a safety feature that will keep the most patients in a healthy range for the least amount of risk.
      Safety features aren’t there to inconvenience the minority who can handle more control. They’re there to keep safe the majority who would kill themselves with too much of it.
      So if someone messes up and dies what do you think will happen? No harm no foul and the world goes on? No.
      Tandem would get sued into oblivion and there goes one of the best insulin pump companies on the market.
      There’s a reason why Animas left the US market. Constant lawsuit losses over a product that was never intended to be used the way it was used along with greedy lawyers and BS science.
      You think the family, lawyers, judges etc would let Tandem off the hook because a patient got themselves killed? Not a snowballs chance in hell. Tandem would be blamed for not making the pump safer and preventing idiots from being idiots.
      That is the world we live in. Responsibility lies with the companies and not the idiots who can’t follow directions and have zero common sense.

    Hello, yes I share the excitement for that intelligent new stuff. I use the Dexcom G6 for 4 month now and it is way better than the G4. No blood-testing? Almost, but you have to test it. In my case it was not working exact on 3 sensors until now. It showed a value of 80mg/dl higher that tested in the blood, feeling almost like collapsing (40mg in the blood, 120mg shown on the G6 --- very dangerous with typical sympthoms of a close coma). In these cases the G6 had to be calibrated many times per day. After approximately 2 days on the body, the sensor starts beeing precise in my case. 2 DAYS. Would I let the G6 sensor take control and correct my bloodsugar? No I certainly would not let it take control. if the sensor poofes that its correct, ok let it take control of the pump, if not i would be horrified everytime I feel different than expected from the numers on the screen of that machine. I hope I was writing everything understandable, cause it is not my motherlanguage. Viele Grüße aus Norddeutschland.

    Great info Danica! I look forward to your next one. Here in Canada, we are about to get Basal IQ rolled out, so we are a little bit behind. I wonder if the extra features you mentioned like security pin and the lack of beeping when filling will roll out as well here or if it's purely part of Control IQ. I am in the process of getting a T:slim, so I love to keep on top of all the info :)
