I was thinking this - the batter is often though of as just being an addition to the food, but it's an integral part of deep frying by causing the food to steam rather than becoming oil-logged.
They could have then tried both the food in batter, and taken the batter off to try just the steamed version.

We fry our turkey and completely cover it in Tony's seasoning before dropping it in. A couple years ago after we took it out, one of the kids tossed a pistolette "type of bread roll" in the grease. I promise you will fight over them lol. They do not get oily and taste amazing. We have to make 3 bags of them now after we cook the turkey. It's the seasoning that makes it. You could technically just pour a can of Tony's in the oil and just cook the rolls lol.

@@aliciaslife9452 that's weird, because I've never been to a Thanksgiving event where there wasn't ham. Like, it's always turkey, ham, gravy, stuffing, cranberry sauce, bread rolls, and mac and cheese. It's like that at family thanksgivings, friends thanksgivings, church thanksgivings, etc.
I think that they used foods that were the most popular across America. Mac and cheese is mostly a southern thing and ham isn't as popular for the main meat.

Treat the marshmallows the way you would ice cream when deep frying. To make fried ice cream you have to have super hard frozen ice cream, so either freeze or freeze dry the marshmallows before deep frying.

I have an idea for your freeze dryer. Mix heavy cream, sugar and a flavor together. Prechill the freeze dryer and then freeze dry the mixture. Once complete blend the result up and see if you can make your own powdered coffee creamer.

you can definitely deep fry some of the stuff that failed here, as long as you either give it a coating of egg and breadcrumbs or batter first. the crumb coat of batter coat makes sure it all stays together and doesn't break into all little parts

You should do a segment where you take your failed deep fry experiments and try to bread them with different breadings, panko, batter, etc. and then attempt to deep fry them. I want to see mashed potatoes with panko bread crumbs deep fried to see if it holds its shape.

Deep fried pies are actually a thing in the southern U.S. They're done a little differently so the filling doesn't open to the oil but yup - tasty stuff.
doesnt help that (I believe) they used the wrong temperature, it needs to be higher so the oil cant soak it (may be wrong but im pretty sure its supposed to fry at like 350-375 but i think they said they had it at 325)

On that deep fried sweet potatoes and marshmallows thing. If you shred sweet potatoes and dry them out on paper towels then mix them with a little bit of flour and some brown sugar you can make sweet potato tater tots. If you put a mini marshmallow in the center of the tater tot mix before you deep fry it you have made tiny bite-size sweet potato casserole tots
