Good question. Why do they protect Norway’s interests. Could it be that Norway pays the Gov’t for the fish?
Norwegian here - I don't know about this particular fish farm, but done correctly fish farms is one of the most efficient ways to harvest from the sea, better than the overconsumption we see happening in our occeans today. With steadily increased demand for food by an rapidly expanding population it is important that we find better/smarter ways to produce our meat. We could all become vegeterians, but I don't see that happening.
I know fish farms have a bad reputation. Not everything you hear is true, but it has had it's flaws so far. But Google "Offshore fish farm", and you will see what the future in farms looks like. Much safer - preventing fish from escaping, more healthy for the fish and less impact on area around it. Large-scale fish farms on land is also in development here - which will improve it's eco-friendliness even further.
If you want to make a diffrence then check up with government (I don't know if it's local or national in Canada) and make sure regulations and safety measures match that of Norway. (Or Second Nation, if you will. seeing as we were the first discoverers of Canada:) )

Not my prodest moment as an Norwegian. Protecting our boarders and waters is one ting but this is just wrong..... Marine Harvest is like one hour away from where i live... so as a truck driver i am never taking a load of fish from them ever! After seeing that my own countrymenn violating native land like that... dissapointed is only the first... i love the ocean and been freediving for 20 years. This is just sad. And i dont like the fish farms here in our waters either.. its just bad for the sea and fish with mutations and gene fault is only the first part of it. But the minister of fishery has a lot off stocks in fish farms so ive been claming for years that the fisherydepartment is corrupt. Hope more gets done to expose this and other illegal activety thats ruining our fjords before its too late.. we are a fishing nation first of all and should respect the ocean as our providers. Not desimate it for next gennerations....

The worst thing is... it is SO true... Look what we have done to our natives over the centuries. Norwegian Same populasion have been treated like trash. So I stand by my first comment... We didn't become one of the richest country's by being nice to natives... ;-)
