- Have you ever seen a game crash before? There are many ways to crash Paper Mario for the Nintendo 64, but what are the most impressive ways to do so? This video intends to answer just that.
Shoutouts to Iycewynd for allowing me to use his "Game Crash Commentary," and to Imglower for the Nintendo 64 video footage.
Thank you to Bonecrusher1022, Hoth'Raka, ShadowVolke7, and Imglower for ranking these game crashes.

"56 seconds per frame"
This is the most beautiful sequence of words I've ever heard. I'm going to cry.
It's too fast though.
*GoTtA gO fAsT*
idk whats wrong with that. thats like me in minesweeper
That’s slow? That’s how long it takes me to right one letter on an essay!

No, no I do not
Well, time to tell my gullible friends that Double Dipping an Egg Bomb on Lava Piranha unlocks Kolorado as a partner.
Connor McClory but you have to say get to that point with out saving so that there time is wasted
I love your profile picture. Reminds me of my own Pokémon drawings.

stride99 but paper Mario is the best.
More like welcome to volcanic diarrhea. -I can't be the only person who heard this-
I'm guessing that since the Egg Bomb chars the enemy it hits, the game crashes when it tries to do that on Lava Piranha because that animation doesn't exist for him. Every other fire based attack clinks off of him so they never gave him a charred animation and thus the game never expects that animation to play.
+nin10doadict Yeah strangely enough I ended up testing Double Dip Egg Bomb on Prologue Jr. Troopa (see Zombie Jr. Troopa glitch video) and that crashes too lol
I like how the corrupted music sound like diarrhea
***** True... Maybe there's something more to it then
So true...
does the egg bomb char whatever it hits without double dipping it?

To think that I thought this game was basically glitch-free at one point...
dogshrapnel Your profile picture.
I know I'm late
dogshrapnel all games will have some type of glitch. It's just the reality developers have to deal with.
Tetris? Pong?
dogshrapnel The only way to make a 100% glitch free game would involve thousands or even millions or billions, or even more than trillions of pre-generated images, assigned values and extremely precise transitions. And that amount of memory would crash Paper Mario.
Link the Pringles Man (late comment)
...Tetris has a glitch where if you clear 5 or more blocks (by clearing 4, then having an above block drop on on the new top row, finishing the line) then the line doesn't clear until you place the next piece.
Pong has a softlock glitch (although people don't know how to replicate it) where the ball goes missing. The paddles are still there, and you can still move them, but no ball.
6:43 I have so many questions about this.
1. How did someone find this out!?
2. Why did someone sit there for a good hour or so waiting for something to happen?
3. How come this isn't number one? I would put it at number one just for the sheer fact the game slows down so much.
and 4. What would happen if you did this on a computer?
Making this many valid points crashes Paper Mario.
Time for the late response!! Yaaaaaay
1. People find these glitches out by performing certain tasks, then putting them in emulators to see what memory addresses they manipulate. They then manipulate those memory addresses perfectly to find glitches
2. Cuz y not
3. Ask stryder
4. IDK what to write here
Yw for all the answers
2. because you can definitely tell the difference between huge amounts of lag and a crash when you have an fps counter
4. what

@Illuminati_LOL XxX no it wouldn't. The game, in the emulator would crash, but the emulator would be fine.

The crash at 9:28 might be because Peach has no "hurt" animation after being attacked lol.
+Jparodyy Pretty sure that's why too
Actually, in this video here.
czcams.com/video/t3JlElGdEaA/video.html
It turns out when Bowser hits peach (5:03) She does have a hit animation for some reason.
Why would she need to? She wasn't meant to do that, after all.
C59 Gaming I think that's because Bowser's jump attack is a special kind of attack that simply shrinks the player's sprite when hit, because Peach still appears to be in her usual "idle" sprite. Just like when Bowser scratches her & poisons her, she simply spins around a few times & changes colors (due to the glitch), but she's still in her normal "idle" sprite. Then the game soft-freezes because Peach has no *real* "hurt" animation from the poison. I could be wrong though lol.
If you could hack the game go give her a hurt sprite, what would happen?
This was a lot more interesting than i expected. Well done.

Paper Mario, the Thousand Ways-To-Crash Game.
What probably happens in the Floating Point Exception (a relative layman's examination):
So Mario seems to respawn to the left when he hits lava and exit side doors from the inside. What most likely happened is that he spawned onto some lava and went out of bounds, causing his coordinates to underflow.
Rogue Packets That may explain some other game crashes - occasionally on the N64 version, when just falling out of bounds in certain areas, the Floating Point Exception happens there as well. Interesting stuff!
@@Stryder7xso I’m late but with my understanding I think I know why the floating point exception crash occurs
Mario got hurt on the overworks so the game sees this and runs the script to briefly lock inputs, display the animations, respawn Mario where they got hurt, and give control back to the player.
When you do the crash and leave the room in time before control gets lock the game locked inputs to slow and plays the sequence out where Mario got hurt and Mario got hurt in the last room but left so the game stores the last Mario position somewhere random it shouldn’t be. The game switches rooms and plays the sequence out. The game sees to send Mario back to their last position before handing the player control back but whoops that value isn’t somewhere in bounds so Mario hit out of bounds. Unlike SM64 where the failsafe is to kill Mario there’s no failsafe so the floating point to say where Mario is was an exception to what should happened. The game gets confused and quits with the N64 crash handler showing the reason the game quit was this floating point exception for Mario’s position. Long winded but this made sense to me to understand with how little of the code I understand.
Is it just me or does the Forever Forest Music Corruption sound like a bunch of wet farts

Liking this reply crashes Paper Mario *everything crashes Paper Mario*
At this point, what does not crash Paper Mario?
Well there's lots more like touching a flower for example
where were you!?
The audio error at #5 sounds like what it sounds like when you take a game cartridge out on a GBA while playing it.
I enjoyed doing that as a kid. M&L:SS gave the best results.
Now that I'm older and know that does damage the cart, I hate doing that.
+Gregory Downes sadly that only rarely happens on GBC
i found a cartridge tilt in pokemon yellow that causes you to immediatly refight a trainer you just fought(without exiting to the overworld), except you keep the money and EXP you got from both fights after you win each, i have only done it a few times, and i have no idea how to purposely replicate it, as it was always an accident
the music becomes a glitchy mess as well, sounds awesome sometimes though...
the best part is, you can do it without crashing the game, it may crash a few minutes after, but if you save before then, you're good.
if only i could replicate it...who knows, maybe someone has...

Why does the floating point glitch scare me?
And the audio crashes.
Why do these sounds scare me?
+The mario fan (also a regular guy) cuz ur a puh
Dude I feel you it is so creepy
It scares you because there's a certain "awareness" while playing a video game that only comes around when discovering that a game is simply code. Not feelings. Not emotions. Just figments of numbers and letters.
*It's like reaching into the unknown and pulling back a nub.*
all crashes scare me tbh
I want that corrupted Forever Forest music to play as I fall asleep xD

I think my favorite is the classic "beat bowser the first time you fight him" crash. It's just so interesting to me how they handled bowser's defence in that first fight. "Well the player can only do 1 damage so we made his defence 1 rather than infinite."
Stryder's probably said this by now, but the Egg Bomb seems to make enemies all soot-y. I haven't played this game in a VERY long time, but fire attacks don't hit that pirhana plant boss, right? So there would be no animation for him being all soot-y/charred, resulting in an immediate crash when trying to retrieve a nonexistent sprite/animation.
And I'm guessing that there was a built in patch to not sootify the pirhana plant boss, but double dip actually uses a different and outdated egg bomb script than the original, which is why it only crashes with double dip.
I did #9 by pure accident a few months ago. My rumble pak freaked the heck out when it happened and it scared the crap out of me. I didn't even realize it crashed until that in-game crash handler seen in #10 kicked in.
8:36 Maybe that light is actually Galeem beaming the characters.
The #2 glitch is so complex to trigger I wonder how someone was able to found it out.
looking in the games code and combining glitches to store certain values.
+NextLevelGamer or luck
Scoota Hoo i highly doubt something like that was luck
+NextLevelGamer most of these glitches involve luck and looking at what others have done. Looking at the code will do almost to nothing since relating code to glitching isn't as easy as you think
Never really understood where the rumor that glitch hunters "look into the game's code" started. Most game developers take special care to ensure the actual game's code isn't leaked online or available to the public.
The closest thing we have to that are programs like Cheat Engine, Memory Hacking Software (MHS), or emulator debugging tools to track the game's RAM. That&'s just looking at the memory though; there's no code sitting there to interpret. We can learn about the game through hacking memory addresses or trial and error.
While I know a handful of glitch hunters who prefer viewing the game's memory while they work on things, I prefer just playing the game on console. Just from understanding this game's mechanics in-depth, I've been able to theorize new glitches and come up with new ways of breaking the game. Also, when my friends find glitches, we talk of other areas they can be applied given the setup we already have.
The #2 glitch basically started due to my curiosity as to why the Sushie Glitch softlocked after 3 encounters in the same room. Turned out it had to do with the game thinking that Mario was in a cutscene when he really wasn't, which gave me the idea to combine the glitch with a cutscene. When I tried it on the upgrade block, I ended up moving around during the cutscene. From there, it was trial and error based on my understanding of the game. For example, I knew we were never supposed to encounter an enemy while invisible with Bow, so I tried that during a cutscene which forced us into a battle. I just kept experimenting from there, and after a number of oddly-specific steps, I managed to find Footprint Storage.
Hopefully that clears up any confusion.
This vid and your other top 10s bring me a lot of comfort, as I come back to these time and time again they still make me so happy.
Thank you for helping me grow my special interest in video game glitches.

Sweet mother of flak, how has it been four years? I barely remember even making this comment
Six years now, incredible
Have people tried to get arbitrary code running in Paper Mario? It seems like with the amount of glitches that crash the game -- most of them crashing differently depending on what you did beforehand -- that this would be the ideal game to get ACE on N64.
+Based King Potato We've looked into it, and I agree the potential is there. Problem is, those of us who care enough to figure it out don't have the technical knowledge required to do so :/
I might be able to help! I'm familiar with debugging N64 games, but I've never tried to find a total control method in any game before. Consider this my next project!
+Based King Potato Dude, that'd be awesome if you looked into it. If you get around to it, shoot me a message here or on twitter or something, I'd be glad to introduce you to some of the community members. We may not know all the super complex technical knowledge, but we know this game like the back of our hands & about all the tiniest glitches.
By the way, this is a pretty big project. Unless there was a recently-discovered ACE, I don't believe it's ever been done in a 3D game before...
+Stryder7x Well, the homebrew entry points from Smash Bros Brawl for the Wii is ACE
+ASSympt0te Yeah, Brawlbomb, Bannerbomb and the Twilight Princess homebrew exploit are all ACE.

Oh, and I just saw the rainbow crash glitch. Ha ha, that was magical! Too bad it can't be replicated.
You know, it's actually kind of funny how, in all the absurd things happening with #2, what finally crashes the game is walking too far without your footprints showing up.
Yeah, lol. The game's perfectly cool with you suspending nearly all the animations and processes, but walking around too much? That's a hell no, fam, enjoy a crash with four different things stacked on top of one another.

+Jacob McMillin Thank you! To answer your question, not really, I speedrun this game so I've made friends with many glitch hunters and was eventually inspired to look for glitches myself, too. So basically, my friends and I found most of these!

love your vids plz keep making them
I love #5. The music is amazing, and outstanding. 10/10, Would listen again.
At 2:18, when you use double dip and eggplant, it appears that the plant doesnt change to it 's damaged sprite. Also worth noting that this boss can be disabled for a sort time with certain moves, so maybe this connects to that? Which also explains why it works on other enemies
Apparently all other fire-related attacks simply clink off of the Lava Piranha. I think what's happening is that the game is trying to retrieve a charred sprite for the Lava Piranha, but the problem is, that sprite doesn't exist
@@JetFalcon710That would make a lot of sense considering some crashes and bugs happen in this game due to a character not having a sprite/loading an incorrect sprite.
I don’t think of another reason for this glitch to happen other than the boss not having a charred sprite and the game crashing due to that.
3:20 On the Nintendo Switch version of the game, sometimes this won't crash, Instead it shows the text "which has the power to grant all wishes"

That number 1 music sounds like painful diarrhea. Not sure why this is in the game, but thanks for the laugh!
Hey Stryder7X! I'm replaying ttyd on gamecube and I used Styder7 as the name since I really like your videos keep up the good work!
how do people find these!?
When all you do I play a single game for over 10 years you find shit
Yup
people who know the inner coding of a game can easily find possible glitches if looking out for them. It takes a lot of background in computer science and programming.
Oh and when I mean inner coding, I don't mean actually reading all of the code. It would be great if we could do that but we can't, so I mean guessing whats happening in the code by the behavior of the game. Eample being with the first glitch the crash handler calls a Floating Point Exception, idk very much about Paper Mario but with my little knowledge I would figure it would be a float (which is a data type) pointer, pointing to an invalid memory address. That's probably wrong, idk.
I'm sure it's the they discover around the game like normnal
when i was like 10 i was watching my dad beat paper mario and like i think right at the end right after he beat bowser the game crashed for like no reason and a giant code popped up and part of it said "THREAD:4 " has that happened to anyone else?
***** Haven't heard of this crash, but it's entirely possible that the Nintendo 64 cartridge was "tilted" when it was put into the console. This can cause the game to do many things, from corrupting music to game crashes.
you're probably right actually. cant think of how he might have accidentally glitched the game to do that when he was playing casually. it must have been just the cartridge. thanks for responding!
***** No problem, and thank you for watching!
My favorite was from another video of yours, the overclocking of hammering the trigger block over 40 billion times just to crash the game...only for those really persistent about crashing the game! Although notify your next of kin to continue your work, your life isn't long enough for this task
Compelling video! I have played Paper Mario to no end, and yet I haven't even known about any of these glitches, except for one that if you leave Mayor Penguin's room, IMMEDIATELY after you had been framed for murder, the game simply crashes.
this is absolutely insane
extremely well done lol
+Evvz Thank you!

I love your videos!
Although not possible through normal means, a crash will occur at the first Bowser encounter if you use a GameShark power boost to damage Bowser when he is supposed to be invincible. It plays his hurt animation and then locks up before any dialogue appears. That's why most guides mention to input GameShark codes AFTER you wake up in the forest but of course I didn't listen

Though it was the Wii VC version.
Accj21 Pretty sure Wii VC doesn't crash there, so that's "normal" I guess haha
#10 on the Wii VC is a softlock.
@@legendgames128the fact that no matter what version you do it on, you are screwed, just makes it even better.
I was playing yesterday and I somehow got the Floating Point Exception in the sewers under Toad Town as I was collecting a coin. Anyone have any idea what could have caused it?
Haven't heard of this, was it on the N64 version? Sometimes cartridges can get dusty, or could be inserted incorrectly, which causes a handful of random crashes.
+Stryder7x Hey, Stryder, some guy called Pepsi man further down in the comments has found a possible explanation for Lava Pirhana causing the game to crash when hit by an egg bomb! The player isn't supposed to be able to successfully perform a fire-based attack on him, so the game crashes because Lava Pirhana doesn't have an animation for getting hit by a fire attack, sounds logical enough right?
I think I missed that comment, but yeah, I agree with that theory
+Stryder7x Well probably because it was a reply.
+Stryder7x how did ANYONE find out the second one!?!??!

And the "vulgar error handler" (Paper Mario says a bad word) video, which I loved, got taken down from the secondary channel. Stryder, please reupload or confirm on other platforms.
Maciej Mućka || Oh crap I seriously would have loved to see it. Too bad it has been taken down.
"WHAT? WHAT? WHAT? WHAT? My game just crashed."
I love how Stryder has singlehandedly brought this game to its knees.
1:10 I did this on the WIi U virtual console version of the game, and it doesn't crash - but it does softlock. It insta-spawns you on the loading zone when you enter the room, damaging you once, sending you to where you'd end up in the room were you to enter normally, it damages you again, and you enter the previous room again, landing you in the loading zone again to go back in. It repeatedly loops until you close/restart the game or turn off the console.
2:19 You know, that's a good question. Did you ever figure out the answer? Why does using Double-Dip Egg Bomb on Lava Piranha not work?! Especially since choosing any *two* of those (using Double-Dip with other items on Lava Piranha; using Double-Dip Egg Bomb on something else; using Egg Bomb from the normal Item command on Lava Piranha) works just fine :O!
Another, related, question: did you ever try Triple-Dip Egg Bomb on Lava Piranha? I know Triple-Dip is in Chapter 7, but you've gotta know a way to get it and get back to Lava Piranha (or just Shark it in)!
5:25 Kinda disappointed Bow's not one of the "safe" partners there. Since, personality-wise, she's my favorite in this game
7:02 Not as fun as 1 frame every 189ish seconds, but still fun. Once you figure out how to stop the crash, I'm sure it will be used for speed runs.
mrperson132 person Yeah man lol if we can work around Upgrade Menu Storage crashes, it might do some crazy stuff for speedruns.

dang! if that rainbow glitch never really has been replicated, it's a good thing you got it on capture!
Dang dude you screwed with this game so much, good job haha!
It's likely the egg bomb crash happens because the lava piranha was never meant to get hit by any explosives. I doubt that Bombette could hit it though an explosion, and that's about the same results that you get by egg bombing some other enemy. Maybe that's what causes the game to crash when you use it on the Mount Lava Lava boss? Try it, might not work on someone like Huff 'n Puff, who's flying, so see what happens to floating enemies when they get hit by it, if you can even make it so that they are guaranteed to be hit by Bombette's explosion.
Also, if the N64 version has a built-in crash handler, why not use that to see what's up with the whole egg bomb double dip thing?
Michael Pitts but Bombette has Mega Bomb, which attacks all enemies.
Does that damage Lava Piranha? If so, does it also crash the game? If so, that might explain why the game crashes from the egg bomb glitch, because the game doesn't expect Lava Piranha to take damage from THAT. Or if it doesn't crash then Mega Bomb is probably just some completely non-bomb related move in itself, according to the game.
Michael Pitts I don't know if it crashes. I imagine it does damage. I'm just wondering what the Double Dip effect has to do with the crash.
Probably nothing at all. The egg bomb probably crashes when used on Lava Piranha regardless of whether it's double dipped or not.
But if it does crash only when double dipped, then it's possible that the egg bomb doesn't initially count as an explosion when it hits prior to being double dipped. Which would explain why it crashes when used on Lava Piranha. Or Lava Piranha could have simply been programmed so that it only had a response to standard egg bombs, and not double dipped egg bombs, hence the crash. It probably makes the game use an invalid animation.
These tracks bring back memories you know
I played this game when I was about 7 or something on the Wii and I beat it when I was 13 (put it down for a while a lot) This game was awesome to play through, and seeing these programming issues and glitches is cool.

Why was I laughing so much during the Peach glitch, #1 and #2?? XD
#10 is the first time I ever glitched a game on purpose! It actually happened on my 3rd full playthrough, not my first like you'd think. I actually figured out this puzzle correctly the first 2 times, but then I didn't play the game for quite a while and forgot how to beat the puzzle, so I crashed the game by performing that glitch. I completely forgot lakilester could float over lava, I thought it'd only work on spikes and I only rembered cooling the lava to walk on it from that section so I though "Oh, guess I'm supposed to jump in here and cool the lava.", needless to say I was wrong.
