Over the past year I have fine tuned my lighting kit to work well for most projects I am capturing and I am excited to share my findings with you. This video is for emerging filmmakers, pursuing video as a primary source of income, not just a side gig or hobby. While this isn't the cheapest gear out there, almost all of these items are budget alternatives to other current name brand products that seem to be all over youtube these days. I purchased the bulk of the gear mentioned in this video used, further helping cut down on costs. I did my best to keep this video helpful but also brief so let's continue the conversation down in the comments if you have questions. Hope that you would find this video both encouraging and helpful if you are needing to invest in lighting gear.

Incredible information. Thank you!
glad to hear it was helpful!
Really good suggestions I love that you are preaching the absolute godsend of the nanlite fs lights not including those awful power brick control boxes. Convenience is everything. For serious gigs I will bring my smallrig 450b and 450d and sometimes I want to only bring my combo of aputure amaran for sidus link convenience but I find the build quality and price I got the small rig lights for to be unmatched when you need power.
thanks so much. yeah so many good lights coming out every few months it seems like. smallrig’s look great
Thank you so much for this insight. Crazy I was actually thinking about my next investment in gear and wanted to start on light gear. This video came to me on the right time. Appreciate your honesty and perspective 🙏🏽 Subscribed!
Thanks Hugo! That is so amazing to hear. Glad that you found it helpful and appreciate you being here :)
tysm about the tip using the EMT conduit with a grip head!!
glad you liked that one! so clutch for sure
Great video! Loved the call out of finding your own path as a filmmaker. You don’t need to be on big sets with huge budgets to make a good living making videos.
Thanks so much Jake! Glad to hear that it resonated with you. I loved the flower farmer video on your channel. Looks so good :)
Awesome video and thanks for the suggestions. I got a FS-300B and a Forza 60B is on its way! Considering about buying later the Nanlite projector and a couple of Pavos!
Great lights. I’ve been super happy with mine!
This was great, thank you!. I am similar to you in my freelancing, I just am tempted to buy the Forza for the V-mount option. I wonder if that's ever was a problem to you or if you have another solution?
99% of my work does not require powering lights with v mounts so if I needed that I would simply rent fixtures that can be powered with batteries and then build that into my quote 🤘🏼
Great video
thanks so much!
❤❤❤
😊🙏🏽
Hello Man, just wanted to say that I love and enjoy all the videos you're making and all this information you are giving, specially on lighting. Love your style of filming and im another fellow fuji xh2s user, love this camera and it's been great. I was curious which card reader do you use?
Thanks so much Diego! That is so kind. I am using the one from Angelbird as it lets you update the firmware on the cards need be. I really like the size of it and have had zero issues so far. Hope that helps. amzn.to/3n6612g
@@blasepivovar you’re killing it I swear. As projects get bigger I feel like the setup must improve as well and with this light video now I know how and what I need to upgrade. I ask regarding the reader cause I got the angelbird card that everybody’s using with this camera and it was working properly (and I was abusing prores HQ lol cause I love prores) and it seems like the card was damaged but im suspecting is due to me using another reader that is not from angelbird, luckily they have warranty for 3 years so just something to mention and keep in mind.
I have the GVM LED 800D lights, Gordox SL 150, SL 200, and Aputure 60D. Which are really good if you are on a tight budget.
Sweet! I haven't had the chance to use those but glad to hear they work well for you!
I would be cautious of buying all different brands because I recently consolidated to mainly amaran and aputure(only used really good deals) because all my lighting is on one app and with a light like the amaran 150/300c or the 200d or x you really don't need much else and it is extremely affordable just know you will need to buy your own transportation case. But whatever brand I find it crucial to be able to control my kit from one app because it can get out of hand if you rig your lights all over and are fiddling with your phone in front of clients
what stands are you using for the pavolites?
just the c stands in the description
I have a godox sl60w & a godox sl150w mark ii. Would you add a tube light or another COB light? I already have tons of diffusion and negative fill options.
Those are great lights. Loved my sl60w. Totally depends on your needs but for projects I am shooting, I would add a tube light next for sure or potentially one of the flexible light mat style lights.
I ended up picking up the rx18td for $200! Thanks for your help.
@@nitablackwood6301 Amazing! Such a good price. Happy to help!
@@nitablackwood6301 wow where were u able to get it for $200
@@lovefirst6157 eBay. The seller has another one available for the same price
Any particular reason you went with Nanlite over Aputure? Not used Nanlite too much so wondering what aspects fo them made you go that way?
Mainly price. FS line is very affordable and also simpler for me (no ballast, just 1 power cable, app controllable. Can also be found used for under $300/light if you shop around. Compared to spending 2-3x that on the 300D II
@@blasepivovar Thank you, that makes a lot of sense. haven't checked the prices in a while but definitely will as I might be piecing together a small lighting kit soon.
@@simvid8107they are so much easier to work with I have both aputure and nanlite Fs and it is a massive difference I fing myself reaching for the nanlight because they are extremely intuitive and fast to set up where the aputure ecosystem is not user friendly and I sometimes dread using my combo of aputure and amaran fixtures
Not many videos on youtube on total budget of $300. You should try this!
$300 for a whole lighting kit? or a single light?
whole kit@@blasepivovar
Ah. Maybe the FS60b, 2 light stands and a 5 in 1 reflector or softbox
