    Thanks for a thorough guide on XT-5! I’ve set it up for photography with custom emulations. Don’t plan on shooting professional video as I have other dedicated cameras to do the job but I’ve been experimenting with IBIS/IS and I have to say I’m keeping these settings as “off” as for experienced handheld shooter, IBIS delay and the forcing of my image feels counter intuitive to me, and I found that it often mistakes slow camera movement and overcorrects, and it causes aberration that can’t be fixed in post. As for a hybrid it shoots great looking footage in 6.2K 10bit internal for anyone who doesn’t invest in atomos systems. 4K 8 bit resulted in some banding artefacts in my case, expectedly.

    Great as always Blase! Always insightful. Got a few questions if you don't mind me asking. Firstly, for the final version of the podcast we are seeing, was there any post processing done to it? Secondly, how is the x-t5 when it comes to recording longer videos. In your experience, has there been any overheating with it. Looking forward to your feedback

    • @blasepivovar
      @blasepivovar Před dnem

      Great questions. In this version I did some light color grading just to dial everything in and make it look as good as possible. I plan to have a version that is straight from the Atem with no color correction and no audio editing and then another version that has some color correction and additional audio editing. The hope would then be to pitch to clients giving them two options at different price points. Depending on their niche I think a lot of clients would be more than thrilled with the unedited versions as they still look and sound great (plus then less post production for me). As far as the XT5, no issues using it indoor for longer recording. Our AC was actually off for an entire episode and it was 84 degrees inside. We went for an hour and a half with no issues. As far as outdoors, I have not done enough testing with the xt5. Hope that helps!

    • @blasepivovar
      @blasepivovar Před 2 dny

      yeah its interesting. not sure about a full review at the moment. downside of it for me is that it only accepts an HD signal. The XH2S can't send an HD clean feed (only 4k), in which the device can't accept. You then have to send the info data which drops the resolution and is not then great for showing a client. IMO it's great for the scenario in this video (coming out of an HD monitor) or for filming yourself. Not great for a directors/client monitor if using the XH2S.

I DP for a production company that uses one for their BM cameras and was interested on whether or not a bunch of XH2s would work too. I couldn’t find any info or videos where someone used it with fuji cams. This is gold. Wonderful video overall

    • @blasepivovar
      @blasepivovar Před 2 dny

      So cool! Yeah they "work" but you cannot control them with the black magic software or trigger stop start. It is just pulling the HDMI feed. From there, swapping out the atem recorded "proxies" with the full res I record in camera will take a few extra steps but overall works pretty well.

    Thank you for the tip on the 3D printed cable protection blocks on EBay. I might have to pick those up for tethered shooting. Sorry that you had a bad experience with your HDMI port... I personally just wait to update firmware for good while until others report back about bugs. Same goes for mac os, Davinci Resolve, or anything else I rely on for work.

    Awesome video!! I'm planning on upgrading from the X-T2 to the X-H2s, so I'm staggered to have discovered that Smallrig don't make a HDMI clamp for their own cage to go with this camera. Granted, it sports a full size HDMI port, but I'd still be much more comfortable having it clamped, as I imagine many others would be as well. With my X-T2 I've had to use a clamp designed for the Sony A7 that just happens to perfectly fit the X-T2 if it's in a Smallrig cage, or copy of a Smallrig cage in my case, and even THAT clamp isn't made by Smallrig! I think you highlight an issue that more manufacturers, and especially such a popular company as Smallrig, need to address; that people want to clamp their HDMI and USB C ports and there should be clamps readily available for every cage and every popular camera model...

      Appreciate the input! I usually get at least one comment every color grading in this lane. I think for a lot of folks, especially those starting out, a color managed workflow wouldn’t really do them much service but there are advantages for sure in setting up your project in that way. For most projects I am working on, I have got noticed any major differences in using a non color managed workflow but there is a time and place for it for sure.

    Hey man thanks for this video, love seeing your process and your content! Personally I've really been struggling with gamma shift issues on export and it looks like quality and consistency is sorted for you, your stuff look great on YT. Definitely think I'm going to pickup your LUTs! It seems like a better workflow than the one I've been using where I use a node to CST flog2 into DWG and then another node at the end to CST DWG to Rec.709 (I'm in Resolve 19) Couple questions... Are you grading on a mac display like a laptop and if so did you calibrate it? Are you exporting with "Same as project" or are you using something like Rec.709 to get the 1-1-1 transform? What do your export settings look like? Thanks again for the great content and info :)

  • @RichardJPhotog
    @RichardJPhotog Před 28 dny

    Ive got to ask because I see a lot of video professtionals no longer shooting in any LOG format. I understand the gains in dynamic range and the ability to recover data. However, most are shooting LOG and converting to Rec 709 right way. doesnt make sense. I just spent 3 days with a wedding Videographer who shot in Flog-2 and straight Mp4. He ran both through resolve and to be honest, you cannot see the difference. The only noted difference is the post production time. Flog-2 took twice the amount of time. His point of view after 20+ years, Videographers shoot in log to complicate and justify pricing. With modern cameras, It is no longer necessary. Dont kick my doors in...just looking for opinion and justification..

    • @blasepivovar
      @blasepivovar Před 28 dny

      Not sure of your exact question but I do understand your observation. I shoot a good amount of projects in both LOG as well as Rec709 - as do a lot of folks - just depends on the expectations for the job, desired workflow, time for turn around, etc. I think I could have shot all of these Rec 709 but I do think I would have ended up with images I like less in the higher dynamic range scenes. So is it worth the hassle? Everyone will have to decide for themselves. For me, grading these with my LUTs was extremely fast and I love the image. As someone who gets hired to color grade jobs for others, I’d always take a LOG image vs a baked in Rec 709 as there is more flexibility to take the grade different directions. Just some thoughts and hope it helps!

    • @Eyeofkamau
      @Eyeofkamau Před 28 dny

      There won’t be an easily noticeable difference if the footage wasn’t shot in a high contrast environment or the files aren’t being pushed to the point where the difference would be noticeable. There is certainly a difference though. Fuji XH2s rec709 readsout at 10bit while flog 2 is a 14bit readout, and you can see the difference in the shadows quite easily.

      @@blasepivovar Thank you for the response. I'm not a videographer but have been a portrait photographer for decades so I do Understand the Raw vs. Baked advantage. Most clientele will never see the difference. Thanks again for some clarification and have a great day!

    Great video, quick question Blase, when shooting indoors, would you increase the lights to get the desired exposure or would you increase the ISO when shooting FLog2 or Classic Chrome? Increasing lights gives me washed out skin tones but if I keep it low then I get high iso noise, thoughts?

    • @blasepivovar
      @blasepivovar Před 29 dny

      thank you! i wish there was an easy answer but it really depends. in general, when filming in flog or flog 2, I would try to always stick to as low of an iso if possible. for all these scenarios i was at ISO1250. if you are overexposing your image without clipping, you will get washed out skin tones before pulling the data back in node 1 like all my examples here. best practice for getting it right in camera would be to monitor your image on an external monitor using a lut that mimics the adjustments you would make to pull back the image in post. I made some pretty easy by using fuji’s conversion lut and then adding a node before it that pulls back the offset in varying amounts. Hope that helps!
