I've been in the video business for over 45 years. These are all old classics but it's good that you are showing them to the next generation of DP's. I used to work with a gaffer who used this stuff all the time in the days when we had Arri hot tungsten lights we could not dim. Once while on a shoot in an office with very bright overhead fluorescent lights, he gaff taped sheer curtains to the ceiling over the fluorescents to soften them because the office was so jam filled with cubicles we couldn't get stands and other lights in safely. It was all top-down light but at least it was softer and we corrected the look in post.
I think all these prices were before inflation, need to bump it up to “diffusion under $40” 🤣🤣 Great job Brady!!
Nice vid! We always get lost in the gear race that we forget one of the most important parts of being a filmmaker... Problem solving, and things like this can help expand artistic creativity without compromising yourself financially. Good stuff! I always struggle with trying to get the source as close as I can for softness but the light falloff is much more drastic because the inverse square law, making it look more sourcey

One of my favorite things about photography and video making is creating tools and gear to work with. I've never bought a scrim or a diffuser, I've built stands and a lot of gear for commercial work just because I find it to be the most fun part. My goal is eventually to build a custom camera
I finally bit the bullet and bought my first light. The Godox SL100Bi. I used it to shoot my first shortfilm where I play multiple characters (like your cuts skit haha) and I bounced the light off the ceiling. Man, I knew that proper video lights were better quality but damn, I was surprised when I saw the before and after with the house lights. Not just the luminance but the CRI and overall quality. Now I also finally have a light strong enough to try out these techniques!

Wish you would have tried to control the ambient light coming in from that huge window (and bouncing around on your large white walls) a bit more. Much of the variance could be do to clouds and outside sources.
Perhaps if we would have seen a “no light at all” example, it would have helped us determine the actual impact of the diffusion itself.
As it stands, your entire room is a diffuser of sorts.

My man forget the umbrella trick :) used first in my first year of photography then i forget about it . And i saw in one video he used it iwas like damn how i never thought about it....
A white one or Black with silver inside. Pretty portable/ affordable. It's my go too now for portable/travel setup . I even prefer that for the size on my nanlite 60 instead picking my 60cm softbox with it.

What power levels & exposure settings are you using? The diffusion is always way less expensive than the light source itself, but if I can achieve the same brightness with a 60W or 100W source, that's $100-$200 in savings right there
I think it is the actual light where people are looking for less expensive alternatives. It seems the youTube world is either offering advice with the cheapest lighting or the best ( expensive ) alternatives. There is very little on just using a Godox SL60 for a key light ( for example ) . You may have done tutorials using less expensive lights, but in general on youTube, I watch a tutorial and then search for the light used and it's in the thousands of dollars.

Have you ever tried using full grid cloth as a bounce? Does it have the same bounce properties like unbleached muslin?
What's your opinion about the skin tone accuracy or RGBs vs point-source lighting (specifically Aputure 300d or 300x and Nova as I have those?) Would you lean towards using the 300d over the Nova for skin tones? Seems like 300d has better accuracy, so I'm curious to hear your take on this :)

Wandering if lighting like 120D is powerful enough to do the bookshelf light or is it better to get at least a 300d.
Get a 300D. If you want to do booklighting, it's barely enough. A 120D won't cut it at all, unless you just need a glow, or the rest of the scene is very dark.

I can relate to this question as I relied on a 120D (the first version) for a year or two. Found it was great for a specific situations where we were indoors, I could place the softbox close to the subject, that sort of thing. (Also good for live meetings pointed at myself, like with Zoom.) When the 600D was on sale a bit I got that one and have never looked back. It is insanely heavy for an older person like myself, but for some recent interviews I did not need the softbox as the 600D with just the reflector bounced wonderfully off the walls and ceiling and gave me decent light. I know it is serious money and a royal pain for travel but it has eliminated the question of whether I have enough light. I continue to use the 120D by putting one of those Aputure Lantern softboxes on that one to light the space a bit to bring up those shadows.
Is buying more expensive material worth it?
Great video. I wish you would have shot this with the Pocket 4K to make it look richer and more filmic. The FX6 looks like video, not cinema. Sorry, my opinion.
Be thankful that this is cinematic lighting channel and not a gear head channel. A Bmpcc4k without good lighting looks like crap. Sorry, my opinion.
Let me tell you, it is a myth. I have an ursa mini pro, Canon C70 and Sony FX6, and not one looks like video.
