  • Interview with Richard Christy known from the Howard Stern show and Charred Walls of the Damned who also played drums on The Sound of Perseverance. This interview was originally from 2016 so the quality isn't quite up to par with our more recent stuff but he gave some great stories and insight into this time period of Death so its worth a listen! This was originally featured in part of our Death podcast series in which we ranked each Death album & had interviews with various members of the band throughout each lineup change.

No doubt Zach! I think Richard kind of pioneered this style. I always thought of the drumming on SOP to be a hybrid of Hogland, Carey and Peart.

All of these interviews with ex Death members is truly life giving. I was 16 when this album came out and it just blew my country Alabama ass away. It revolutionized me as a musician and a person. RIP Chuck. Almost 22 years after his passing he's still so fondly remembered.

Same here brother, I was 15 and it changed my life and the way I play, how I write lyrics and how I look at life and people in general. Such a wonderful soul, and it’s so great to see that Chuck’s music is only getting more popular. 20 years ago, not many people knew his music. Now, I got into Walmart and several workers there comment on my death shirt, the UPS driver compliments my death tattoo, the mailman noticed my death beanie. Makes existence a little less abrasive when so many people actually know who Chuck was, and they’re happy to say it.

I moved to Orlando in 2002 and took over Richard’s spot in a side project he was in with the bass player from Nocturnus Ed Mowery and the guitar player from Burning Inside. I got to meet some of the guys from Death and ended up moving into Richards practice spot after he left for the Howard Stern show. I found his drum tabs for Iced Earth and all his old drum sticks and also a few real pics of Chuck and Richard together. Like old polaroid style. Lots of great memories in that spot. Richard was a huge influence on my drum style. I still can’t believe I was lucky enough to play with those dudes. I still have the pics too.

Chuck has always had incredible players. And Richard is most certainly one of them. Can you imagine him, Gene and Sean (rip), in the same room jamming? Three titans of the instrument! Chuck was truly a special person and musician that was taken way too early.

My band Killface opened up for Richards band Burning Inside early 2000s, maybe 2001-02 ish, they were amongst the sickest shit ever at the time. Sort of Cryptopsy level insanity. Richards drumming was the most insane stuff id ever heard up til then. Their guitarist Steve was super cool, he liked us, came over and hung out (steve tragically passed away a few years later in a car accident as i remember). Ulcer our friends from tampa played that show in fort myers fl. (ulcer originally from ft myers)

I still remember when TSOP came out and the night I bought it. It was pouring rain. Hearing Richard’s drumming was just amazing with chucks music. It was so jazzy yet so brutal and thrashy. Just an amazing performance with an incredible sound. For me, that album has always been my favorite, but I love every death album. The whole package on TSOP just feels so polished with such incredible musicianship on all ends. Richard really provided the meat on that album. (Had an old recording engineer 20 years back refer to the bass and drums as being the “meat and potatoes” of the music, which I always loved as a bass player. Gave me that extra push to get my tracks done)
Richard really did chucks music an incredible justice and dignity. I always had the feeling he was in marching band haha. He’s got that sound. My favorite death drummer performance with sean and gene being a close second. Thanks for providing this interview!

I know I'm a minority in this but I wish there was a version where Tim sang the lyrics for this album. It does sound more like a Control Denied album more than a Death album to my ears.

There's a reason it sounds like a Control Denied album to you. «Bite The Pain», «A Moment Of Clarity», «Story To Tell», «Spirit Crusher», «Voice Of The Soul» are originally Control Denied’s songs. You can listen to the demos of some of the songs with Chuck’s clean vocals
