I'm not so sure about Death. Murphy was incredible in Spiritual Healing but it is arguably the band's worst album. The lead guitar parts are definitely miles ahead of Leprosy, but the songwriting overall is way worse and sounds just uninspired at times

@@Diesel0807 yeah I always found Obituary to be overrated. Their songs are very basic death & roll type of riffing. I never understood the hype for them. They have a couple catchy tracks on every album but mostly they are just ok. Don't get me wrong, I love James Murphy's guitar playing and Allen West had some great solos too. I am referring to Obituary's riffs. I wish Chuck could have got along better with James on tour & James could stay with Death longer. I would love to hear James play on Human.

Spiritual Healing is a groundbreaking album. The first album that was brutal with exotic, melodic solos. It was a big deal. I bought the cassette in 1990, my first year of high school. This album raised the bar. There is no doubt. It is certainly within the top 10 death metal albums of all time. It gives me chills when i listen to that album, even so many years later. Spiritual Healing strikes a nerve musically in the best possible way.

Love Spiritual Healing. It's my favourite Death album. The songwriting is phenomenal. The production was one of the first records of its kind to sound "clearer and cleaner" - less reverb, which was a giant leap ahead in terms of production at the time - one of the first records of the time to sound actually produced.
I have to say that Bill's drumming is one of the catchiest drumming ever. Bill really makes so much sense - his drumming is so considered, and melodic. The fact that the bass drum is really up high in the mix is such a joy to listen to, and a masterstroke I my opinion.
We had already been primed for drier production and cleaner sounds with "...and justice for all".
My two cents on this : if this line up continued and the next album has someone like Bob Rock on production, I think Death would have been one of the biggest metal bands on the planet.
This is one of the best metal albums ever - with THE best line up ever.
I must admit - that European tour with Kreator was the beginning of the end. Every European wanted to see Death and thought Kreator were not a world class band as Death were. To turn up and see the roadie singing on stage was unforgivable. The band at that point had cheapened the brand and ticket holders were burned.

I got to meet James once. In 2002 I flew from Oklahoma to Ohio for Ohio Death Fest and the night before in Cleveland they had a James Murphy benefit shit show so I had to make it there. Well the next day in Lorain for the Fest, James was just walking around chatting with people. He was still very sick at the time and you could tell he wasn’t feeling well at all but when he had a break and didn’t have a crowd around him I walked up and completely fan girled out on him. Hahaha! Normally you won’t get a great response but James was absolutely THE coolest guy of all time. We talked about music, life, family and just everything going on. He acted like the average Joe… We talked for HOURS that day. I’m so unbelievably glad he got better.

Not a more talented guitarist than Chuck a more neo classical chops kinda player yes .. but Chuck was a brilliant composer rhythm player and soloist, at the time of spiritual James may have had some good tools in his box to contribute to chucks repertoire at the time spiritual was recorded. by the time Chuck was sick his playing was at a very high level matched by very few in the genre, huge James fan wish they could have made more records together but he wound up being a hired gun for many bands and Chuck went the route of steely dan hiring a different group of players for every record

I grew up fairly sheltered and wasn't allowed to listen to death/extreme metal in my parents house... mid-late 90s. Came across Convergence in a CD store and bought it. Didn't know who James was, just loved the guitar work. Thought he was just some rando that put out a killer guitar album. As I got older and started getting familiar with the classics, I kept seeing his name on things, I was like well damn, that's who James Murphy is.

I'm thankful I stumbled upon your channel yesterday when I saw you had a recent interview with former lead guitarist Rick Rozz, and that was a great, insightful interview from Rick talking about personal stories about him and Chuck that you wouldnt of heard or read anywhere else... it helped kinda lift the veil of how Chuck was and his personality along with Rick and other people because like I said there isn't like a bunch of footage of the band outside of concerts and there isn't very many like books or biographies on Chuck & Death that could shed some more light on who these guys were, and where were their heads back in those early days when creating these masterpieces of albums! Thanks for these interviews/videos!!
