    If you're searching for an iconic, sturdy, American-made moc toe boot you've almost certainly come across these two industry stalwarts: Red Wing and Thorogood. The boots look so similar that you might think it's a toss up between the two, but the design, leather, and ESPECIALLY the sole actually vary significantly.

    I have used work boots for 20+ years. I am on my feet for 10+ hours a day. I tried Thorogood boots for the first time last year. These are a game changer. Very comfortable from day one. Never have had to add insoles in these boots. And yes, I have owned several pairs of Red Wings. Hope this helps.

    Both boots are great, I have a pair RW 1907 and the same thorogood boot. Over time the thorogood boot stretches out and are more loose on my feet but wearing boot socks took care of that. I mow lawns and I’m around wet grass all the time so that wedge sole was a con for me, but Thorogood offered the boot described above with a wedge sole carved into a regular heel style with added tread. Also the sole came in black which is awesome cause the white would turn green.

    It was a little bit more involved though. Had to drive an hour away to the nearest Red Wing store that had my size in stock, then I had the sizing issue to wear a 12 wide was too big, but a 12 was barely too small, so I just got the 12 stretched and they seem to fit perfectly now. I like the red wings because they make them the same way they did back in the days when they were introduced. You're getting a boot from 1952. And that requires a break in. It's like you get a molded boot that you have to work at for a month or so (probably less honestly), or you get a more modern comfy boot that doesn't change at all. What you get is what you got. Just different preferences.

    My Thorogood are years old, look great and show now signs of giving up the farm. They have been through it all and then some. I actually went with my normal show size when I bought my current pair, and yes my feet tended to swim in them. I did this on purpose because I needed to have room for my insert. One thing I noticed right away with the Thorogood and still notice is that I don't get foot fatigue after wearing the boots for any length of time. I also lucked up to be able to purchase them at a great sale price. I think the only reason I've never purchased a pair of Redwings is the cost up front.

  • @montanawhite5699

    Thorogood leather is close to the same thickness as redwing. It’s barrel rolled making it way softer. That’s the difference. I owned the redwings a few years ago. Took 2 months to break in, then after about 2 months later the sole melted away, super soft. If you drag your feet, your work with concrete. The redwing sole will melt away before the boot is even broken in.

    For me thorogood all day all year. I tried redwings. I tried the 1907 and my goodness was that an uncomfortable boot. I had to stop wearing them. Then i tried a pair of irish setters. A bit better but still not a very comfortable boot. An uncle of mine steered me towards thorogood boots and i never looked back.

    I bought a pair of Therogood 6inch moc toe about a year ago. I double water proofed them. They are american made lock stock and barrel. I have to wear a insole for working on concrete floors. They are comfortable. The pig skin breaks in easier and is softer. Paid $185 for them. They are definitely a better buy. I'd buy a pair again when they wear out.

    Nick, what's your opinion on Mexican made boots ? There is a brand i have seen called Padilla they make a moc toe, with full grain "grasso" leather. Not sure what "grasso" is, my guess is that it is an oil tanned leather (grasso\grease). jyst wondering if you have ever seen a pair. they only run about $50-$60 so i am gussing they're junk.

  • @bowlingmatt
    @bowlingmatt Před 3 lety +1

    My Thorogood boots, I’ve had 3 pair, never lasted long enough to be resoled. The cloth lining would always come apart and expose the plastic toe cap. Also, the stitching would always come apart. My redwings on the other hand will last about three resolings before they become trash. I’m a farmer that does a lot of walking and my boots are exsposed to everything from wet grass to harsh chemicals and the Red Wings just outlast most any boot I’ve found.

    • @bowlingmatt
      @bowlingmatt Před 3 lety

      My first pair of Thorogoods had a very short life because I spilled a large amount of gear oil on them. I replaced them with another pair because I liked how there was no break in period with the first pair and they were cheaper than Red Wings and Danners. The second pair is what turned me off to them. They basically fell apart and became uncomfortable very quickly. The third pair was purchased as a Christmas gift for me, and they were just as disappointing. On a side note, I would also recommend Danner’s USA made and recraftable boots too.

    Love my Thorogoods. They are great looking and the most comfortable/supportive footwear I have. I do like the more slim style of the RW better but I’m this day and age why put yourself through the pain of breaking in a boot that won’t put last the most comfortable boot on the market? Seams like silly hipster logic. BTW Nick, the tad longer hair suits you well.

      They are undeniably comfy boots, Matt, it's true. I think Red Wing is prettier and I think it's fine to pick clothes and shoes based on their looks so long as you don't act like it's anything more than that, I think I was honest in this video haha.
