- Today I'm in the rustic studio painting a still life of my home grown pear harvest! I will be using oil paint and palette knifes, on stretched Belgian linen. The aim is to capture the beautiful country character and light that this shed / studio has to offer!!!
Enjoy the relaxing atmosphere as I paint and explain my thoughts on paint application, tonal value, picture composition, plus more as I go.

Thank you for the explanations of what ,how and why as you were painting, so helpful for me it keeps the direction toward the end goal. Kath the Kiwi
You are so welcome Kath!
Congratulations Richard for this painting achievement that you performed, in real time, in front of our very eyes!
Thank you so much 😀
Not seen any one paint 🍐 so big lol 😂 and the colour to tone what can I say - just delicious painting.
Thank you so much 😀
G'day Richard, Before you start to paint, I am taking bets that your shirt is going to be multi coloured by the time you finish!
ps
The Props in your Rustic Studio are Fantastic.
Maybe down the line, a nicely polished up, leather saddle, astride a 'saddle horse' would go down well!
Oh Master of light and texture, Your knife manipulation is mesmerising. I love the way you have depicted that rough bench. You make it look so easy, but obviously that comes after much practice and persistence. What a beautiful property and abundant crop...obviously enjoyed by man and beast. Thanks again for sharing your talent to inspire us. Hope you are safe and out of flood zones.
Hey Helen, glad you enjoyed and thanks for the positive feedback!!! :-)
Just to add that Morning Light is looking mighty fine without a frame. And thanks for another wonderful calming distraction.
G'day Conrad, happy to hear! Many thanks!!! :-)
I left Australia in 1973 and you bring so many memories back in your colour and texture. Thank you so much.
That's great Joanne! Thanks for letting me know :-)
Absolutely love this. You are amazing.
Thank you so much Gayle!
Wow Richard! I just found your videos and have watched quite a few and I am blown away by the beauty of your paintings and your process! I even pressed the "like" icon before watching this video because I already knew! I do landscapes in pastel, but I am learning so much from you and I thank you!
Thank you Donna and welcome aboard!
Very enjoyable watching and learning. Those colours are so pleasing to my eyes , the tonal value explanation helps my understanding, with an explanation of hardening and softening the painting for visual effect of focus👍🇦🇺
Fantastic work again
Thank you so much Michael😀
Richard your artistic temperament knows no bounds. This is outstandingly realistic the organic pears of different shapes and texture colours are wonderful. I would never think of painting a still life on a stretched canvas this size, you did and oh boy what an achievement. Love it. Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us.
You certainly know what you're doing. It's awesome.
Hey thanks Liz!!!
from the Rio Negro valley, Patagonia Argentina where the best pears and apples are produced, I send you my sincere congratulations for this painting. A hug..

Give and take. I will be putting these things in to action very soon when I start my first paint. You have been the inspiration to try. Thanks mate, cheers Rich

Another stunning and captivating painting Richard. The scale of the painting with just 3 pears is genius! Any interior decorator would hit it out of the park placing any of your paintings in a room! The wow factor in spades!

Many thanks Patty!!!
I like the cobwebs in the corner.
Yes, me too!!!
Hi Richard! I absolutely love your paintings and your beautiful serene videos of the country-side in Australia! I live in the Dallas, Texas area and enjoy an area called the Hill Country.
I have just started painting again this year after a 40-year hiatus. I learned in my teens from my grandmother and now want to learn how to properly paint. I definitely would like to do a lot of Plein Air painting.
What part of Murray River do you visit and paint? I enjoy following your adventures and videos. Keep on mate!!!
Hey thanks Ted! I paint along any part of the Murray, but particularly the South Australian section!!! I wish you all the best with your painting! Cheers :-)
I absolutely love the looseness and abstract quality of your technique! My question ishow long does it usually take for a painting to thoroughly dry? I used oil paints straight out of the tube the first time i ever tried oil painting. It was a small canvas, took eight months before it was dry to the touch! Went back to acrylics.
Great artist. Seems like a wild man painting and the results are spectacular! (There are rabbits running in field beyond the horse. How do they not eat everything in your garden?)
Thank you very much! The rabbits are not to bad, only a few!!!
Kind of impressionistic and abstract? I guess that's what's modern today.. It's not easy to paint with a large pallet knife like you do Richard.
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍🙏🙏
love your Art Richard ! AWESOME 👍🏼 it's a very special Talent you got. i'm a beginning painter and you just catch my eye love your concept! 🥰 can you tell me where to get that big palette knife? been looking for it and can't find it anywhere
Hay thanks Felicita! It is a Liquitex palette knife!!!
Beautiful panting! Do you paint the edges of the canvas? How do you keep the birds, squirrels, and bugs off your pears? Thanks for the video.
I just clear primed the Belgian linen sides on this one! It has be a wetter year than normal, which seemed to keep the birds etc. mostly away!
🙏🙏👍
Outstanding! Enjoy the spontaneity of your brush strokes. Just out of curiosity, how long does it take for your paintings to dry ?
Thank you! Cheers! Touch dry in a few days!!!
👍🏻
Cheers Karen! :-)
Is the word ' tone ' a replacement for value in Australia? Can be a bit confusing.
It can be called tone or tonal value, or just values!
@@richardmusgrave-evans9886 I hear it being called values, which is what I use, and tonal values but when I hear tone I think of colour. The different terminologies can be a bit confusing because different people use different terminologies but I understand now. Thank's. I'm enjoying you mix it up with studio painting's.
@@europeanroyalty4778 Thanks , I will take what you say onboard, so viewers in all the different countries around the world can clearly understand!
Ok you use linseed oil?
Just oil paint with this one Judith!
What primers do you use?
2 coats of clear sealer and then gesso!
Thank you Richard, it’s exciting to try these new ideas, you videos are transformative!
@@cheryrobertson2735 Fantastic!!!
Hope you are safe, can we help?
@@cheryrobertson2735 Hey thanks, much appreciated! I'm all good! Cheers :-)
Podrias tener subtitulos en español por favor
¡Podria intentar!
Cobwebs like that in Australia, worrying.
Lol!!!
Maestro te vistes complicado e n tonos gusta mucho el tonos carmelitas azules pero el toque seria algo en amarillo o verde chárter con los demás. En la profundidad ok bien ..lo demás es tu estilo bey
For sale?
It is Judith!!!
Very strange to paint yellow pears without yellow.
A simple colour palette!
