Yokomo Super Dog Fighter (YZ 870c) 4WD RC Buggy Build Review. My thoughts now that I've built it! 👍

  • Happy New Year to all! Here are my thoughts on the Yokomo Super Dog Fighter now that I've built it. It's a fantastic kit and I'm very impressed. There's no denying it is on the expensive side, especially outside of Japan, but if you're a fan of vintage re-releases, then you should definitely consider picking one up.
    Since I shot this video I've been able to get out for a shakedown run. All went well except for a minor issue with the rear wheels rubbing against the rod ends on the upper arms. After a few battery packs there were noticeable grooves appearing. Nothing major, and I've added a couple of shims between the upright and wheel hub so it shouldn't happen again.
    Being belt driven, as you'd expect it is very quiet. And the 23T brushed motor on 2S was surprisingly quick. I think the simple drivetrain, light weight and overall design make it very efficient. It's easy to see why this buggy performed so well back in the day.
    Should you go out and buy one? Well, you're asking the wrong person as I'm a self confessed vintage re-release RC addict.😅 But in all honesty, it's a wonderful, miniature marvel of engineering and the chance to own (albeit a replica) a piece of RC Racing history. So far reaction has been favorable, with the 870c sold out everywhere. The next available lot will appear in April (in Japan). Given the response I think it is likely we will see more re-releases from Yokomo in the future.
    On a personal note, I've ended up spending most of my winter holiday indoors sat in front of a computer screen editing. I had planned to take a little CZcams break during the winter holidays, but then the Super Dog Fighter showed up and...
    Well, what I'm trying to say is I hope you all don't mind if I take my time with the running video.
    Thank you all for watching. 😊

    interesting with your take on the manual. I felt the same with the RC10CC. Although from the outside it looks like the same manual once you open it up its completely different. The new, is all pics whereas the original is paragraphs of literature with details explaining how to build it. You did a great job showcasing the build and highlighting the quality of the parts. When I do get mine and start to build, I'm going to have to watch your video again for reminders. And I'll download a copy of the OG manual too. Thanks again and great video.

      @KaiCityRC  Před 6 měsíci

      Yeah, once I started really looking through the original manual I couldn't help but feel they missed an opportunity with the manual. Having a vintage style manual to go with a vintage style buggy would have been perfect. And it would have been a great deal of help during the build process. They kept the box original, they should have kept the manual original too. 👍

      They could do even better and include the original manual, publish a streamlined modern one if they felt like it, but most importantly include all the setup and mods over time from the experience of drivers winning and losing

      I was able to do a shakedown run yesterday and it drives really well and you can tell with the right driver, this thing would fly around the track. Very smooth and quick to turn. Wrenching on the 870c looks to be a real breeze as everything is simple and easy to get to.
      That said, this buggy more than any other feels like it is best used on hard dirt/clay tracks. The belt/diffs are completely exposed and although the under tray helps, small rocks, gravel, twigs etc still do make their way inside and could jam between the belt and pulleys. Loose dirt, fine gravel and sand are probably not a good idea for sustained running!

    • @uncletom1971
      @uncletom1971 Před 6 měsíci

      Thanks! I tend to gravitate towards simpler designs, which is good because I'm not that great at painting bodies. 😅
      I got lucky this time. I managed to get a pre-order in. The model shop I used shipped it out the day it went on sale and I was off work, so I could jump right into building it. I've been told my unboxing was the first on the net, which is kinda cool. 😁
      But also a little unnerving as it feels like the whole RC community is suddenly looking in my direction! 😬
      As for ideas, well, this is the first and could, possibly be the only ever re-release from Yokomo of a world championship winning machine...and it would be a real shame to miss this opportunity...and it will be worth tons on money in the future...and I've always wanted one...and...I'm out of ideas! 😁 😂

    This came out great! I think those colors go very nicley with each other to! Hope to see a running video soon 😉 I'm certainly loving the vintage scene of Tamiya, kyosho and Team Associated RC10s. But personally I dont feel a connection to this car as much as others in a "must have" mentality. And being priced where it is currently in the US doesn’t make it easier to get one. But with that said, I can certainly appreciate the vintage RC history around this brand and kit. Maybe one day I'll get one myself. Always enjoy your videos and cant wait to see this one running !

    I am happy I watched this video, what a cool buggy after all! Of course I know by now your videos will offer a really good presentation of the RC car, but this one really surprised me. I pay a lot of attention to RC on the social media these days, so of course I saw the hype for this buggy, but I didn't see what the fuss was about... It's still not a buggy I'd get for myself, but I gotta admit it's really nice, even with all its flaws and obsoleted design. It's sooo cool!
    I'll definitely be looking out for your next videos with this one, especially the run video.
    And the colour is really nice, very oldschool, retro cool!
    And by the way, I don't remember where in Japan you are located, but I hope all is well where you are, I've been watching clips from the earthquake on West Coast, looks pretty nasty.

    • @KaiCityRC
      @KaiCityRC  Před 6 měsíci

      There has certainly been a lot of hype, especially in Japan, for the release of the Super Dog Fighter. I think it's probably due to its history and the fact it is Yokomo's first real "re-release" of a buggy from that era. Many of the people I've talked to here had, wanted, or knew someone who had a Super Dog Fighter back in the day, so there is a lot of nostalgia about the release too.
      I wasn't too sure if the color scheme would work. I seriously considered going all neon colors, yellow, green and pink for a real neon 80's vibe. Then thought about a black and pink design, before finally deciding to go with my usual preference of blue! 😁
      I shot some footage during a brief shakedown run and will try and get a running video done soon. 👍
      Oh, and thank you for asking. I'm in Yamanashi, not too far from Tokyo and quite a bit south of the affected area. We had some mild shaking, but nothing serious, thankfully!

    "Super Dog Fighter" has to be one of the greatest names ever for an RC!
    Looks like a very raw cast finish on the bulkheads, unusual when your used to seeing smooth anodised aluminium on kits.

      It's too early to comment on spare parts from Yokomo for the 870c. A little worryingly, in the back of the manual where the spare parts and options list would normally be there is nothing...🤔
      Tamiya tend to run off parts in batches, sometimes once or twice a year for many of their re-released buggies. Though some more than others. Parts for the Avante, Egress and VQS are always hard to come by, but show up now and again. Parts for Grasshoppers, lunchboxes etc are always reappearing and usually in stock.
      Kyosho, to date, produce a new batch of kits around once a year and soon after parts will start appearing. I tend to grab as many spares as possible while they're in stock. That said, the Javelin and Optima have gone over a year now and now new batch. Finding certain parts for the Javelin/Optima proved very tough! Although I'm in Japan I ended up ordering them from the UK as it was the only place that had them in stock!

    Im not so sure about the aluminium being superb. This looks very much like cast aluminium, and not high grade 6061/7075 machined alloy.

      I looks like cast aluminium because it is. Superbly cast aluminium.

      I don't have an original 870c to compare, but I believe that used cast aluminum also.

      @@GT500NSX that's not the point. Small cast parts will never provide the stiffness and durability a machined part made of quality alloy provides.

    As a retired guy who doesn't race anymore I'm ready to pull the trigger on one of these to use on my backyard track and practice sessions at my local large outdoor track. I had the original chain drive RPS Dogfighter back in the day. The only car I ever won an A-main with. That said it looks to me that this would be much easier to build (and live with) than the Kyosho Optima 60th anniversary. I'd love to hear opinions from any of you that have experience with both. Thanks

      The 870C is a far simpler car to buy and maintain. Everything is easily accessed, even pulling the diffs out won't take more than a few minutes. The Mid chassis feels sturdier and without an aftermarket top deck, the 870C chassis has some flex. The Mid also has greater scope to tune the suspension and is easier to source wheels/option parts for. The 60th anniversary model also has a few upgrades over the normal Mid.
      Between the two it's a tough decision, but as a self confessed Kyosho "fanboy" I'd have to choose the Mid. 😁 At this year's GFCC event, I suspect the 870C's will be taking on the Mid that dominated last years competition.
