What’s Inside A Turtle Shell?

  • A turtle can’t crawl out of its shell. In fact, the shell is actually part of a turtle’s skeleton, as much of our ribcage is of ours. But if you could peer inside a shell, you’d find some of the most unusual features in the animal kingdom, such as a butt - err, cloaca - that some species use to breathe underwater.

    When I was a kid we left a small plastic pool outside for the winter. It has some water in it to stop it from blowing away. Mid winter I looked in it and noticed a turtle frozen in the water. We all thought it got stuck and drowned or starved or whatever. We thought it was dead. Come spring time that turtle woke up and was swimming in the pool. Blew my mind. It was literally frozen inside a gigantic ice cube for like 4 months and lived.

      It technically wasent for zen but lower it's metabolism like a crocodile
      It was still breathing but such at a low rate that it didn't had to take fresh air along with the help of its body as the video explain they can breath with out leaving the water
      You should be careful braking the ice because if you do it's body might get confused and die thinking it's already summer
      I don't know that much on that last part though, I just know it can be bad

      Does this works the same for land tortoises?

    • @CzechMirco
      @CzechMirco Před rokem +3

      @@Deontjie Yes it does. Even we humans use the same energy releasing metabolic path called "anaerobic glycolysis". But in the presence of oxygen during the step when the original energy source, glucosis, has been metabolized into pyruvate, we "divert" our metabolic path to a process called "oxidative phosphorylation", which yields many more ATP (a chemical compoud that serves in vast majority of living organisms as an at hand universal "power pack").
      In case there is a lack of oxygen (for example in our muscles during extreme physical exertion), the option to divert the metabolic path towards oxidative phosphorylation ceases to be available (since oxygen is necessary for it) and it continues one more step in the anaeorbic glycolysis where pyruvate metabolites to lactate - ion of lactic acid. The problem is that our bodies can't metabolite lactate away without oxygen, thus it is stored in our tissues until the supply of oxygen is restored. As they explained here, hibernating turtles use the chemical and spatial composition of their shells to neutralize it even without oxygen (and presumably without much loss of energy).

    Shells are definitely a great defense! But did you know even shells aren’t invulnerable to attacks? A proper dogbite can put a serious crack in a turtle’s shell. That being said, it does help having an extra layer to protect you before the dog bites into your lungs; but sometimes, it’s not that far away from actually getting there.

The male was named Sheldon (of course) and we would let them walk around on the floor of the house. He would be on the other side of the room and the kids would call his name and he would turn and walk over to them as they lay on the floor. In the summer they would take them outside in the backyard and the tortoises would eat various plants for a fresh meal and somehow knew not to eat the rhubarb leaves. They can move at a pretty good speed too.
