      I tried to make the 1 M/E panel work. It was just too frustrating. I very often have more than 10 sources, and utilize the 2nd M/E quite often. Using the X-Keys panel has always been easier than being confined to the limits of the BMD 1 M/E panel.

    Hello Doug, nice piece you added to your setup. Have you compared the mega panel from Skaarhoj to the BMD controller? Would be interesting to hear your thoughts about pros and cons between that two solutions.

    • @djp_video
      @djp_video  Před rokem

      Building a Skaarhoj Mega Panel with similar functionality would be about four times the cost of this panel. While the Skaarhoj setup would give a lot more flexibility, its price just makes it infeasible.

    • @djp_video
      @djp_video  Před 3 měsíci +1

      The only way on the switcher itself is to create macros that will change both sources simultaneously.
      Using BitFocus Companion you could setup triggers that would sort-of do this for you, but it's not going to be 100% the same as running both of them simultaneously. For example, triggers have a really hard time of determining when an auto transition is used vs. a cut. And action performed by a trigger are always at least a frame behind.

    This is a sweet upgrade for real.... I mean you can still keep your x keys around since you are on ver 8.x... If it aint broke don't fix it after all.. If version 8 is stable enough for the trailer unless you upgrade to the new mixers I don't think its worth upgrading the software for the time being.

    Doug, I'd love to see you do a video comparing something like this to vMix. Or contrasting the two. If someone was considering switching (pun intended) from vMix to a physical panel what would be the benefits, and what would be some of the challenges? Thanks as always for the great videos.

      That's something I've wanted to do, but I don't know that I'm qualified to do it justice. I use vMix for instant replay, but my knowledge of and experience with the product other than that is fairly limited.
      I've talked about the differences between hardware and software switchers a number of times, but I've never put it in a video of its own. I should probably do that at some point.

    Hi Doug, are you able to control the hyperdecks on your 2m/e panel in the same way that you can via the software bm switcher app? I have been unable to find a way to select the clip I want to play from the panel and it seems like I can only select the hyperdeck clip in the software. Am I missing it on the hardware panel? • @CourtWatchAu
    @CourtWatchAu Před 8 měsíci

    ATEM should make it so you can connect a regular USB numpad or a USB QWERTY keyboard for the macro or custom key inputs that you used too use 'Just Macros' for

    • @djp_video
      @djp_video  Před 8 měsíci +1

      The more buttons to control things the better. But I didn't use JustMacros because it gave me so many buttons -- it was about the programming language and the power that brings.
      The only reason I've continued to use JustMacros is because it lets me write my own code to control the ATEMs... so I'm not just limited to the (limited) capability of macros, comprised of just a list of steps that are always repeated exactly the same every time. With JustMacros I can ask the ATEM for state information ("Which video input is currently live?" or "Where is SuperSource box #1 on screen?" or "Is Downstream Key #1 currently on screen?" or "Are you currently in the middle of a transition?") and then alter behavior based on that information. Or perform calculations based on available information, or have precise control of timing of operations against or within the switcher. Or, even better, control many different devices simultaneously from one place -- moving a supersource window around in a very specific way using trigonometric functions to calculat position while slowly adjusting the level of a channel on my audio mixer and double-checking that my stream is live, for example.
      There isn't another product out there that gives that level of control -- not even close. And the ATEM wouldn't ever be able to do that because it is just completely unaware of things going on outside of itself (except for some limited access to HyperDecks and Camera Control data).
      BitFocus Companion lets you control multiple devices, and does have access to state data, but does not offer any way to alter behavior based on state data. My SuperSource animation macros would be simply impossible in Companion. And Companion has this nasty habit of sometimes crashing, even occasionally taking down pieces of equipment with it.
      Central Control, while in some ways more powerful than Companion, is still just a 'here is a list of steps to execute, in this order, exactly as written' solution as well.
      Ultimately being able to write my own high-level code to manipulate the behavior of the device with conditional logic is the only reason I've tolerated JustMacros all of these years -- something nothing else has offered. It was never about allowing me to use the X-Keys panels.

      This unit is a control panel. Essentially just a bunch of buttons that send commands over Ethernet. It has to be connected to a Blackmagic Design ATEM switcher (whichever particular model of your choice, based on your needs), which does all of the actual switching.

    Doug, which actual ATEM Switcher are you using with your Control Panel..?
    Would the ATEM 4 M/E Constellation 4K be a good match for the Control Panel you have now..?

    • @djp_video
      @djp_video  Před 2 měsíci

      I have: ATEM 2 M/E Production Studio 4K, ATEM 2 M/E Constellation HD, ATEM 1 M/E Constellation 4K, ATEM SDI Extreme ISO, ATEM Mini Extreme. The panel works with all of them, though some features are only available with certain models, particularly the 2nd M/E control section, which only works with the 2 M/E switchers I own.
      But selecting a control panel has more to do with how you use your switcher than which model you have. If you have the 4 M/E but never use the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th M/E, then a 2 M/E or 4 M/E panel would be a waste for you. If you regularly use more than 10 inputs, then the 1 M/E Advanced Panel 10 wouldn't offer enough buttons for you.
      So it comes down to, what are you shooting, and how do you use you switcher, and then selecting the appropriat panel based on that. The 2 M/E panel will work great with a 4 M/E switcher, but if you regularly use more than 20 inputs or more than 2 of your M/Es, you might consider stepping up to the 4 M/E panel.
