  • In this video I show the process I take to make a charcoal drawing of these two goden retriever dogs playing in the water to create a realistic but loose piece of work. The drawing only took me about 5 hours. I'm using General's charcoal pencils and Clairefontaine paint on mixed media paper in gris colour.
    Hopefully you find it helpful in your own drawing and thank you for watching.

    Amazing work.
    How did you learn how to do water?
    Also would you consider doing a tutorial on hair growth direction? Especially on the dog’s nose/face area?

      This is the first time I did water in charcoal really so I hadn't previously learned how to do it. Just general skills gained from lots of drawing...but mostly observation skills and learning how to draw what you see and not what you think you should be seeing.

    once again, another fantastic video. trying to convey wavy water (in any medium) has always vexed me - i've never gotten it right. here, you do such an excellent job both demonstrating your method, ways to execute your method and explaining it.
    question: do you ever get scared when doing your art? thoughts like "i can't do that"? if yes, how do you chase those thoughts away and gain the courage to keep going on a piece? question: for those of us in the states, what are the dimensions of size "A4"? question: your brush control is soooooooo good! has it always been like this for you? is there anything that you do (or have done) to get your skill in this area so good? question: how do you manage your palate? i find myself constantly mixing, then remixing my colors until i have like 5 paper plates all covered in the various colors that i've been mixing. like, in case i decide to go back over to the nose (just an example), i have to remix those precise colors all over again, just a tad darker or lighter, depending on what i want to do. poor toni! i will flood you with questions! if not here, where should i put any more questions that i think of?

      Haha thanks for the questions. In a way, water vexes me too....the idea is to not think too much into how you're going to do it and just draw/paint what you see. In one way you have to think of it as water and why it looks the way it does but in another way, you have to forget that it is water and simply just look at it as a mixture of shades and textures and how they interact with each other.

      @@TmHudsonArt so should i put any additional questions here? keep in mind that you don't have to answer ANY of my questions. but i have lots of questions and you mentioned that sometimes people don't have any questions. i just want to help you find material for this video (and i have lots of questions, lol). anyway, no pressure to answer, but i am not sure where to put additional questions.
      thanks for the guidance on painting water. i think you have described it perfectly. with some things i can paint what i see - it comes naturally. but with water, maybe the irregularity of it??? - i just get completely lost and i don't know what i see anymore. so your description is extremely helpful!!! thank you!!!!

    sorry!! about questions: should they be focused on your artwork, your journey as an artist, or both? of course, i give you another question! xD

    • @TmHudsonArt
      @TmHudsonArt  Před rokem

      No problem...it can be more generalised for the questions..just not obviously private sort of stuff lol...

      @@TmHudsonArt i would never, ever, ask anything private. i was only thinking of asking you which medium you started with as an artist. that kind of thing. i guess someone might think that was personal. i guess i don't know....
