    This brings back nostalgia. The times me and my brother would sit waiting for a game to load and then spend hours on it (especially games like dizzy) taking it in turns. Sometimes, while the game was loading, we would talk about how to progress further or read about pokes or new game releases in Crash, your Sinclair or Sinclair user. Happy times. Then came the sega megadrive. Now I have a PS4 and playing games like red dead redemption 2 or last of us is just mind blowing.

    The specific border colours meant something, Red+Cyan meant it was loading in BASIC, yellow+blue meant machine code. The Speccy's DEFAULT was basic, but professional software would be machine code as this was more efficient. The little bit of red+ cyan you alwas got at the start was a machinecode loading propt to change the data type.

  • @ThermionicValve
    @ThermionicValve Před 2 lety +1

    After the main part of the bytes data has loaded for the game, you probably noticed that it followed by 3 very short bytes. They are data keys which the game checks before the game starts.
    If the numbers don't match, the spectrum resets and you have to reload the game.
    To make it even worse, the 3rd or last bytes data changes every milliseconds.
    This is a anti piracy measure.

    It actually doesn't take not that much time, a bit more than 2 minutes.
    Sometimes big modern pc games like GTA5 take like 1 minute to load so that difference is not crazy.
    I had several computers in the 80s (spectrum, C64, amstrad, st, amiga) but the spectrum graphics had plenty of charm. Ok there's the color clashing thing but they were very precise whereas they look somewhat blurry on the other systems.
    I've always wondered how much of the loading time was because of the drawing. Sometimes they were very nice, like in this game.

    And just like that I can smell the aroma of PCB’s and the solder heating up to hazardously hot temperatures.
