- Welcome back to the channel, folks! It's Jacob Knowles here, ready to take you on another day in the life of a Maine lobsterman, but with a twist. As we find ourselves in the slow season for lobster fishing, our tasks shift from the daily haul to maintenance and preparation for the busier times ahead. Today, we're embarking on a crucial mission: to retrieve and repair over 50 lobster traps, a fleet valued at over $10,000, all of which have seen better days thanks to the relentless wear and tear of the sea-and a mysterious creature that calls these waters home.
Our journey starts at the crack of dawn, under a breathtaking sunrise that paints the sky in hues of orange and pink-a reminder of the beauty and serenity that comes with the job. As we head out to sea, we'll share with you not just the stunning vistas but also the hard work that goes into maintaining our gear. Each trap, battered by the elements and the creatures of the deep, tells a story of the challenges we face out here on the water.
But today's not just about the physical labor. We'll dive into the mystery of the "crazy thing" that lives in the ocean, sharing insights into how it affects our traps and what we do to protect our livelihood while respecting the delicate balance of marine life.
So, join us for a day at sea, filled with stunning visuals, hard work, and a glimpse into the life of a lobsterman during the slow season. It's a side of lobster fishing you rarely see-the preparation, repair, and perseverance that ensure we're ready for whatever the ocean throws our way.
Don't forget to like, share, and subscribe for more adventures from the coast of Maine. Your support helps us continue to share these stories and preserve the traditions of lobster fishing for future generations.

When the phrase 'wildlife conservation' is uttered, this is what should come to mind. Yes, you're harvesting animals for food. But with the rules you're following as well as the gracious removal of the barnacles and particularly the education that you offer with every video posted, this is inspirational for what could be everywhere. A sustainable system takes compassionate and passionate individuals like yourself. Thank you so much for sharing these.
Do other new england states have the same size and other conservation laws? Back in the late 70's the lobstermen used to complain about Massachusetts raiders who would trap the really big lobsters and sell them in Massachusetts where they were considered legal.
@@holleymother9026 I wouldn't know, but a good question.
@@holleymother9026they are pretty standardized now from what I understand.
As a lobsternan by blood I respect that you sell your older traps to the younger guys getting in. Keep the living alive brother
He's a remarkable man.
Agreed. It's a hard living, being responsible and keeping the fishery sustainable is very admirable. Wouldn't follow otherwise.
Notching isn't something everyone does-ya know who you are.
Really? I thought you were a western dragon?
😂

Hey Jacob, I love your videos. I'm actually an engineer at a company that makes the trap mesh. Would love to hear your feedback/suggestions.
Isn't that what you get paid for?
@@mala890 I do more of the plant maintenance/production side. Don't get to talk to real users like the sales team does.
@@FinnellRacing For sure. There is a real difference between American steel and Chinese "steel". Also the galvanizing process and plastic coating process make a big difference. I'll check that guy out, any video specifically?
@@simonmessenger7217 To help the engineers get a better understanding of how the occupational and environmental factors affect the equipment, so that they can improve those areas, creating a more durable, higher quality product.
Instead of wood use UHMW
Boring?! What you do is Fascinating! And you're dedication to the industry, ecology, and the individual critters, YOU MAKE IT ALL SO ENTERTAINING, AND EDUCATIONAL. I'm so blessed to have found your channel.
I really enjoyed hearing you say that you sell the retired traps to the younger generation at a discount. I think Deadliest Catch has convinced me that all fishermen are in a big competition with each other.
It may be a boring day for you, but it's fascinating for us landlubbers.
Thanks.
My dad captained a 1927 cedar-hulled flat-bottomed lobster boat that he ran as a dive boat for years. He used to put ground cayenne pepper in the hull paint to prevent worms and borers.
Don't drink the spicy bilge water for multiple reasons, aye? 😂
That sounds like a great way of life. Do you do something on the water for a living now?
@@m.theresa1385 no, in fact I live in a land-locked state now. :-(
I learn more from you in one video than I have a whole lifetime of living here.
Thanks for doing more than just lobstering.
Guinness World Records, the heaviest crustacean ever recorded was an American lobster caught off Nova Scotia, Canada, weighing 20.1 kg (44.4 lb).
50 lbs was a close guesstimate Jacob , I imagine if someone were to use those huge crab cages like they do in the Bering sea they would catch a 60 lb one in short order that is if they live to get that big .
I wonder how long it was?
@@monkeygraborange using the one they caught as a start compare to Jacob's 6ft height , guesimate is around 4- 4.5 ft

Thanks for sharing all of this BTS info with us Jacob. It's always fun to know what all is involved in the process.
Missed seeing you boys. Always a pleasure to watch your videos thank you for sharing with us
Heya, critics? Making videos on a boat, on water, editing and letting the landlubbers watch is amazing. You got a complaint about the music? Go kick rocks.
Great video brother. I don’t know anything about your work other than what I’ve learned from you but the one thing I’ve picked up is that yall do it the right way and with admirable integrity. Appreciate the videos.
As always love your documenting of the Maine Lobstering. Hold on to it, Captain! We have already lost so much of the bounty of our oceans.
I'd love to see a video of you repairing your traps or doing maintenance on your boat. The lobsters are awesome but there's so much more you have to do that's interesting.
I am always amazed by you. This is a tough way to make a living.
I agree boat mechanical repair videos are great
What a beautiful sunrise!
Indeed
I’m a New Englander.
My dad would always say how he and his dad would fly down to the docs when you guys would come in and get fresh Maine lobsters fly them back to Vermont and have dinner. I still do the same thing thanks for making these amazing videos mate❤
Hi Jacob, Great video. Sorry about the expense. Would love to see how the repairs are done.
I could watch for hours Jacob, it maybe a quiet day but so interesting to us non sea faring folk xxxx keep up the great work xxx
Capt. Knowles - Excellent video, thank you so much for all of your hard work!
Those shots of dawn out on the water were beautiful!
I appreciate & respect your hard work Jacob and refurbishing the broken traps which is probably harder than doing the catch itself. 😮
Your "office" surroundings are wonderful...Miss the ocean😊❤
Thank you, Jacob for educating a South African on lobsters. I would love to go out with you except I get seasick. Keep up your lobster spa days and feeding the egg bearers. Greetings 🇿🇦
Jacob bless you for being the Stewart of the SEA!
I think you mean steward...someone that protects and manages something. Stewart is a name or surname.
Jacob, petition to have a mounted camera at the top of your boat? (Maybe more stunning shots?) 😉
A fast forward of a full day would be cool with normal speed pauses for special catches on a different close up camera.
@@Sarafimm2
Excellent idea ! Hope Jacob sees this?
Web cam!
Yes!! I’d have to agree with this comment! A couple of additional cameras pointed forward and aft… they aren’t huge costs and could definitely add some footage that would otherwise not be caught. Although it may capture too much of Keith’s antics…. he could start his own channel from it?? 😂🤣
I really enjoy watching your videos Jacob 😊 Thank you for sharing what it truly takes to run a fishing boat for these amazing lobsters 😊
What a hard great life though. No two days ever the same. Safe travels and full traps gentlemen🦞👀🤩
Jacob's Barnacle Cleaning service! LOL
9:18 A metre-long specimen, caught off the coast of Nova Scotia, Canada in 1977, weighed in at 20.14 kilograms (44lbs 6oz). This is the largest lobster ever caught and currently holds the record as the world's heaviest marine crustacean.
Man that sunrise must make it all worth it!
Jacob, thanks for the videos and the education.
Those Red Fish eyes look like someone put google eyes on them.
Well as i read a few comments I just wanted to say....
Thanks for bringing us back on the boat. HI KIETH, Missed seeing you too! LoL
I think the video was outstanding... music was spot on... The friggin sunrise was AAAAMAZIN🎉🎉🎉
That fish 1:15 had GOOGLY EYES 👀👀 The kind that bobble around on stuffed Teddy 🧸 😂😂😂 So comical looking!!!
Sorry for the expensive fixes in the traps. Did you save your very first trap?? Nostalgic. Stay safe and prayers for a busy successful season 🙏
I'm beginning to understand why 'lobsta' is so expensive.
I know you’ve said it was a slow day a few times in the video but strangely I really enjoyed this video! It’s interesting to learn the behind the scene and more annoying/grating stuff about your work. And the sunrise!!
Also the red fish looked like something out of Dredge 😮
Would love to see a video on how you fix the traps
Are we onto a new lobster season now? Been missing them during winter. You would think they'd get repetitive but nope! Still love them!❤
Thanks Jacob and crew for taking the time to make a video!
Great job Jake - it’s always enjoyable to head out to sea with you and your crew. I enjoy the longer format - but the music? Nothing against music or musicians but I think you were doing better without it.
I could watch this all day long, I’m from Newfoundland, my dad is a fisherman and I have so much respect for what you guys do!
I love your channel ❤️ the contents are amazing. Love all the raw stuff 😊
Missed being out on the boat.
A quiet day of fishing, but I still really enjoyed the video 😁
lol, yeah I get the cost of replacing the runners, yet, it’s part of nature, and from the videos I’ve seen you highly respect sustainability and protection. Chuckle as you provide more back to the sea for these Borers?
"This is just seaweed". What kind of seaweed? Who eats it? Where does it grow? It's amazing how many things are connected to lobstering!
It looked like knot weed or wrack weed, a common cold water seaweed. It floats all around. Can't recall what eats it.
It might be boring for you, but it is interesting to us. Thank you for sharing.
love these videos love watching what is kept , returned or notched
Gorgeous sunrise! Love watching to see what unusual catches you find. Love the claw spaw too!
WOW, you guys are awsome!!! Doing the right way! / Sweden
Conservancy at it's best. Well done boys
Great video ❤ Thanks for sharing ❤
Instead of wood runners , try binding the bottoms with strip rubber or rope. It's what all the brits use.
Man, I am shocked at the prices. I got out years ago in MA, but we could build a 36" 10-gauge 4 brick pot with oak runners for about the same as Friendship trap sold 12 gauge 34" pots, $60. They lasted 10 years, and the runners about 5. I never could stand those concrete runners.
These days are just as interesting as they show us the unfiltered reality.
I could tell that the second egged you notched was happy for the snack but a little pissed off you didn’t call her “sweetheart”. What’s a girl gotta do?😂
I live in Pennsylvania! I'd love to come out and help you guys for a few days on board the boat! Ut would be sooo cool to see what a day in the life would be firsthand!
I love how you take your time with the girls and talk nice to them. Good work with the lobsters.
4:37 ouch+ that got my eye... and my mouth was open too!
Catch anything cool? How about that sunrise?! That is so cool.
That sky is amazing
You get an A+ for your Description Essay. 😃
I love watching you + crew + sea critters! Wish I could think of a better material for those rails... bone? (Naw, worms would eat that too). Keep making great videos! Maybe CZcams will cover the cost of a few new traps 😁
Thank you I did learn something new today. I had no clue. There was such a thing as ocean termites.
We used a red paint on our boat hull which the boarers wouldnt touch. Dont know if this treatment is still available? Love your office Jacob!
Any day in the water is a great day! 😉
What an insight… thank you
Thank you for sharing the video. Learnt so much about the lobster traps, stuff I never knew about; "ocean termites" eating away the wood runners.
Looks like very hard work ty you for wanting to do this omg
Fascinating. Is every catch inspected by the authorities? I hope you get picked up someday for a reality show.
My father worked on boats from the age of 10 if you can believe it. It’s interesting to watch your videos as it gives some perspective what it’s like. Great videos, a fan from NZ 🎉
Jacob was running his own boat at a young age 👍
@@joanneganon7157 yip I can believe it my dads in his 70’s and is still fishing on his boat. I grew up around it but never caught the bug, but have always admired my Dad for being consistently passionate about the sea.
@arohanui922 I grew up in a fishing harbor.
When I was 20, I went out to Sea for 1 month .
We were steaming scallop boats back to Texas.
Unfortunately, we started out in a huge storm off the Carolina coast, I was very seasick for days🫢.
That was enough for me!
I, too, commend those who make a career on the sea.
JO JO
So some official guy really checks to see if you were being honest about what you take out of the ocean?? That's wild. Great videos I really do enjoy them!
So many people will see the money that you make and not have a clue of the expenses that go out like water from a bucket. Thank you for sharing what you do
Woah woah woah! those lobsters didn't get a snack!
Have you ever considered using a composite board?
Jacob, would a pvc pipe work instead of wood for a runner?
Not enough weight and buoyant
remember that money and celebrity status ruins friendships.
As always, great stuff. Thanks
That’s a lot of lobster
Sea termites are disgusting creatures! So l have heard! 😕
Knew someone that bought a mahogany sailboat, sight unseen! 🤦♀️ Who stated that not only did they feast but also flew around! Yuk! Good Luck Jacob! You have my utmost respect! Brightest Blessings to you and your crew! ☺️✌️💖🦋🙏
Sounds like regular termites to me. I had a fiberglass boat but termites were eating the wood in the engine compartment, they don't eat the teak trim though
@@k.h.1587 Oh well, according to the owner, they were water/ sea termites. 🤷♀️The sailboat had been in the Gulf of Mexico prior to delivery to Key West. The damage to the bottom of the boat was extensive. Leading it to have hoses and wiring 24/7. Because it was sinking in the harbor. The rest of the boat looked lovely! 😁😉✌️
@trudy285 sounds like shipworms or borers to me, he probably used sea termites as a nickname. Of course regular termites can't go under water.
My marina had a tree infested with termites outside the office, which even got tented. Many of the boats were affected, but this is much different than what you experienced, however I suppose a boat with a non teak wooden hull could be affected the same way, just entered from above the waterline rather than below like shipworms and borers.
It was just bog standard termites that got to mine, but they couldn't do a thing to the fiberglass hull. I heard through the grapevine that they were even trying microwaves to get them out of the boat after I was forced to sell it to the marina after being evicted for a manic episode (which I my case only happens after prolonged high concentrated THC use, I am on the spectrum undiagnosed and didn't get misdiagnosed as bipolar till 35 after about 6 months of weed use and finally an "overdose" of my first edible. They are so quick to diagnose bipolar when it could be something else entirely. ... pharma$$$$$$$
@@k.h.1587 l hope you're feeling better these days! 👍
Personally, l would never try an edible. Because l am so sensitive to so many things. And if you have to digest whatever you ate, that takes a while! Like if someone is trying to lose weight, the day they started to eat less/ healthier, it will not usually show up on the bathroom scale until two days later!
Brightest Blessings. 😉✌️❤️🦋🙏
@trudy285 can't say that I am, it got worse over the years, in more recent years, the last decade or so, it was usually wax that triggered subsequent "episodes", I haven't been on regular antipsychotics outside of hospitalizations, but after my last one, I kinda shut myself In, stopped going to the Dr, so no diabetes (which the meds gave me to add to the hyperlipidemia) meds or lipid meds, plus a diet consisting mostly of little ceasers and jack in the box because they are close by and relatively cheap (Ceasars) or take ebt (jack), led to panreatitis and 2 hospitalizations over the last 2 years. On top of the loss of my van filled with a bunch of my music, telescope and photo equipment when I got arrested and the drawn out case I am dealing with, as well as legal action taken against my manic guitar center credit shopping sprees (which also happened back in 2011, so the fact that they let it happen again screams conspiracy), and the issues with the vehicle/registration that I financed during the episode (on foot fresh out of jail after totalling the first car I bought at the beginning of the episode), make me just wishing for a bomb to drop and just take me out already. I just want to go back to at least before this last episode, or any of including the first episode, or more ideally way back to about 95 or 96, and do everything differently. As I am sure many people wish for.
So no, not feeling much better in general, not in pain or anything, but when the hospital prescribed meds run out, which is very soon, who knows how long it will be till I am back in the hospital on morphine. A heart attack would be much quicker....
You said "brand new trap" at the end. What kind of wood is being used on those brand new traps? It might be nice to share so others can avoid. I'd think harder wood would last longer... and maybe they'll start making traps with the better runners.
Yay! We're back to lobstering! It was a long winter & enjoyed your vids, but......this is where the action is and I'm lovin' it, Jacob & crew! Boring to you is hell bent for leather for us! Bring it on guys!
i really enjoy your videos. i very much appreciate the stewardship.
Mate. Watching from Australia here and admiring your passion and compassion for your environment and the creatures in the water...and on the boat.😁 Always enjoying your content.
I think it's cool that you're experimenting with bg music and branching out with your filming qnd editing taste. You gotta try things to find what you like, and there's nothing wrong with that. Some people aren't good with accepting change, and that's okay. Just gotta realize that change isn't a bad thing, and just chill and trust the process
What about using heart of pine? The old timers were using it to build houses for a reason.
