I’ve talked to my supervisor many times about my introverted working style. Nothing has changed since I was hired 3 months ago, and I’m constantly surrounded by friendly people talking in my office, but I can’t get work done. Today was the first day that I didn’t finish an assignment on time and my boss was upset with me. My anxiety was beyond obvious and I fought a panic attack with the entire office watching. I changed jobs to make more money, but I never imagined being in an environment that caused me to be a worse employee. I’m mortified and don’t know what to do. I already stay late to work when no one is around because most of my assigned tasks pile on daily around 10:00. (I wish I could work at home, but I work for a university that doesn’t allow that.) I feel so drained and at a loss. Can anyone offer advice?

Stop making excuses for business to provide terrible office environments. Headphones are not solution to how horrible offices have become. Sit in your car? Madness.

As an introvert, I'm really opposed to the open space office. Then again, I work with chatty folks so it's pretty hard to be productive. Even headphones doesn't ward them off. Also, It's also pretty distracting for some people because they like to see what everyone else is doing because they can't help it. I'm more of a distraction free person. I get less done in open environments and I get more done at home (reading and writing).

How to Survive an Open Office as an Introvert?
Easy answer: You don´t - especially if critical amount of morons in the office has been exceeded. Speaking from my own experience, after three years in an open plan office with some extra-nasty and obnoxious morons I just had to leave otherwise I would have gone crazy from the constant delivery of gossiping, idiocy and oversharing. Every. Damn. Minute. Of. The. Whole. Day. I was completely drained both emotionally and physically. No hacks are going to solve this, run while you are still sane.

Excuse me but I need concentration even when authoring an email properly. I get many irritating interruptions when I am trying to task master. Never mind trying to focus on my other work. Open offices including cubicle are a nightmare because you can hear everyone and they can hear you on phone calls or people dropping by. And... go get your own Cinnabon! 😂 So tired of extroverts thinking introverts are the exception.

I work in an open office. Thankfully introverts are in one area, farther from the door and people traffic. Strategically place plants or computer monitor on your desk helps to block visual distractions. The extroverts have to pass my desk to get to the introverts, so if they ask me, "where does so-and-so sit?", I try to be their "gatekeeper" and advise them to email or IM them instead of dropping in on them with a question if the person isn't expecting them. (Introverts hate being put on the spot with a question.) I must be an ambivert because I thrive on interruptions, love to help others, but can still tune out the world in the midst of chaos and get work done. Our company requires a personality test (DISC), so we intentionally build successful teams based on personality styles, without creating silos.

If you find it difficult to work in noisy environments where others don't seem to have the same problem you could have ADHD, an auditory processing disorder, Asperger's or other underlying causes. In which case you are likely entitled to accommodations. Also numerous studies show open offices reduce productivity, increase spread of disease and even reduce collaboration. So if you are in a position to do so, advocate against open offices?

We are all trained in school to work in quiet. When it's time to "work" in a class or take a test, there is no talking allowed. How can we then just switch to working in a bunch of talking and noise.

  • @WTF_888
    @WTF_888 Před 10 měsíci +2

So to sum up the solutions to survive (avoid all the distraction) in these stupid open plan offices, we need to:
    1) Come 3 hrs before and leave 3 hrs after the 9 to 5 core hours. That's 15 hrs workday. Better yet, come on the weekends too!
    2) Wear ear plugs or headphones all day to block all the talks and noise distraction.
    3) Wear blinders (like a fucking race horse) all day to avoid visual distraction from people moving around, so that we can only look straight to the monitor and focus.
WTF is going on?! This stupid open plan office trend is moving to the accounting and finance industries too, where these people do not need to brainstorm for new ideas. They just need quiet and not distracting environment to perform their best!
We're sure in a crazy world!

We have open office space they call it collaboration friendly. It's taking a lot to get used to for everyone. We wear lotta headphones in our office. Eating at the desk isn't a problem where I work because I work for food company. It's food everywhere.
My take away is the part about asking the person I need to talk to to stop by my desk when they're up. Hopefully they don't wait too long and hold me up.

All the ideas are based on common sense, but not always easy to implement. What would be helpful is advice on how to implement these ideas if your boss or office politics don’t permit them. For instance, I asked 4yrs ago to drop a day in the office and get to my desk at 7.30am - in fact I’m in at 7.20 most days, having left home at 6.35 am. I still get comments about my day-off & the boss has never forgiven me for requesting it when he allowed it. I actually work more hours in that office than all my colleagues, who sneakily leave early, come in late..... My point being, even if you do the right thing sometimes appearing to work against the grain gets you into hot-water.

    • @michelleodonovan7299

we all have strengths and weaknesses. Introverts tend to tell themselves that their own opinion is just their perception and that other people don't need to be bothered with it. You are right, sometimes you need to speak up, so that's something they can work on when you address it.
On the other hand they have a lot of strengths they can embrace.
