Just an average afternoon here in England. We are fucking mental, and proud of it.
I've driven past Cooper's Hill many times and trust me the films of the cheese rolling really don't show quite how steep the hill is. If you ever get to see it in real life you'd probably think it's a miracle that anyone who gets to the bottom is still alive. It's fair to say some of the people in Gloucestershire are known for being a bit mental but no-one I know would even consider entering this race.
I used to live in Cheltenham which is the next town over from Gloucester (where this takes place). We always make fun of people from Gloucester, with the joke being "He broke six of his fingers chasing the cheese. All the fingers were fine on his other hand"
I lived in Shropshire 6 fingers are well known on Clee Hill, it was the tails that were hard to hide.
🤣
If your from Bristol it’s a high 5🤚🏻, and if your from Swindon …… high 6!!
The six fingered folk are in the forest, not Gloucester, big difference!
Gold.
I'm from Gloucestershire, our craziness makes me proud.
This cheese rolling thing happens near my mum's place. It's mental.
We should hold an alternate olympics with cheese rolling, shin kicking, bog snorkelling, that village football game where the whole town kicks the shit out of each other etc..
It would be massive! X
A prime example of british rural insanity. 😂
Hi guys, coopers hill is a 70 degree drop at the top, and halfway down its around 45 degree drop, also in 2013 a 27 year old American army veteran Kenny rackets from Colorado springs won the cheese.
The woman who won the cheese in this video is called abby lampe, she is 21 years old from Smithfield, north Carolina.
gloucester cheese rolling is an old tradition that goes as far back as the 13th or 14th century love the videos lads
It goes back before records began in the 1100s
Originally used to test wooden barrel's strength hence the name Cooper's hill
A cooper being the person making the barrels
I think it's clear now what you 2 have to do. I expect to see you here next year to represent America 🇺🇸 👏 😃 🧀
The Cheese rolling goes back 100s of years. Coopers Hill is in Gloucester famous for its cheese.
Right fellas - now that the ladies of North Carolina have shown you the way.....when are you two coming over to take part !?
Don't forget lads, the ambulance is NOT going to cost you $2,500 for a trip to A+E (ER).
It’s a part of our culture and it passes the time
Cheese rolling has officially gone global. There will have to be qualifiers held around the world if you want to "run" at the main event. 😉
Notice that the Aussie Man just mentions the ambulance on stand-by, in casual passing... Whereas a Yank would have been asking who's paying for it !? 🤣👍🇬🇧
I was there a few years back and the cheese hit the security fencing so hard it buckled it and rammed it into the guy's face next to me.
Well worth a visit if you pop over.
Your description of your visit to this event made me cackle, rule britannia
Hi fellas,
*The heavy fence is just there at the bottom, to stop the cheese!*
The cheese can (and usually is) very very fast... …Up to 70kph.
So the fence stops it from hitting spectators or thumping into buildings at the bottom.
The local rugby team are at the bottom of the hill to stop or slow people; but no big tackles; just all in good fun; and then there are the brave, who actually want to get flattened! lol.
😊👍
Of course there is alcohol it’s in Britain
“IS THAT A BLOODY FLAMINGO?!” 😂
I loved how delighted Spencer was ahah😂😂
I live half a mile from Coopers Hill and the cameras don’t give it justice. Almost a vertical drop- crazy crazy 😝
Greg Davies tells a brilliant story about chesse rolling on the Graham Norton show 😉😂🤣
Aussie commentary is brilliant 🤣🤣
Most parts of Britain have a local sport or challenge, it replaces tribalism outside of football.
The local one to where I am is 'bat and trap', in others it's 'gurning'; bog snorkelling is just a more recent new phenomenon.
Only us Brits would chase down a wet, muddy hill just to chase and win a cheese. I am surprised no one has died over all these years or at least badly injured themselves.
Us Brits... And one crazy American from North Carolina 🤣
Um I suspect someone has injured themselves quite badly, the old knee to the face is the worse, hope that hasn't happened but it probably has.
@@chatteyj lots of people sustain injuries each year. One year a bunch of people got struck by lightning (1982?). There are injuries that range from dislocated joints, to fractured fingers, and even the odd broken thigh bone (and many more besides). Often, those that get injured are spectators. So I read an article that followed on from the 2006 run, and as I recall there were 25 people injured, and 12 of them were spectators! Nobody is safe at the event!
No body has died... yet.
Abby Lampe will never have to pay for lodgings or substance after her win! She is legend here in Glous
At 5:55, "Captain England" is Chris Anderson who has won more races (23) than anyone else.
I'm a cheese roller and proud 👏 I miss my homeland.
The fence is there to protect the spectators from the cheese hitting them at 70 mph.
Abby Lampe - STEM student.
The big question is whether or not she was able to get the wheel of Double Gloucester through customs
We don't have guns here in the UK, they're dangerous. :)
Spencer's reaction to the NC woman was perfect. Maybe you should join her next year as a mixed doubles pair?
I actually live in Brockworth, where Coopers hills. As kids we "played" up on the hill. When I was 16, I actually WON THE CHEESE RACE
icecream makes me v happy in life and i was 100% sober during this. go pack!!
I have not watched the video yet but before we start I don't think that any American has any right to criticise what another nation does with their cheese.
Especially if you've ever tasted Kraft!
There's a woman from Gloucester crashing into the 11 foot 8 bridge in a rental truck
Yessssssssssssssss. This makes me feel very calm.
Did this 10 years ago, broke a finger, twisted an ankle, dislocated a shoulder and the girlfriend I was with who was filming near the bottom dropped my DSLR in the mud and fucked up a lens - Great Times!
I've been waiting for you to discover this piece of traditional insanity.
Bog snorkelling is another.
Good one this year!
Well done N Carolina. Liked they included the womens race often not in these reactions. Aussie commentary 👍
Like most of our best traditions, we have no real idea how or why this started. It’s possibly over 600 years old, and the story is that it’s to do with a dispute with who was allowed to graze sheep on the land.
I imagine someone dropped their cheese, it rolled down a hill, they ran after it and other people thought "that looks fun"
It probably started in a pub when someone dreamed this up, possibly involving a bet, either way its cool and I hope they don't ban it.
We have a crab apple festival in Cumbria. It literally consists of a truck driving through the town, with people throwing apples at the crowd.
Apples?!??! Not a soft tomato like they do in Spain, but apples. ouch
If you saw this on Monty Python it would be perfectly normal.
That American girl just went from an 8 to a 10.
If you guys ever fancy coming over to the UK to participate in or spectate this mental event I live not too far and you’d be welcome to stay. My hubby is from NC too so you’d also have someone you could chat to x
I’ve been to the Cheese Rolling as a medic.
That was a busy shift….
Ozzy man could commentate the film Schindler's list. And it would be a crack up.
Haha the Australian dude commentating makes it
You should start a cheese rolling competition in America
Nobody could afford the medical bills and I'm pretty sure the health insurance firms would immediately shout "self inflicted injuries aren't covered"!!!
I live in gloucester
I live 10 mins from where they do this 😂😂 also PPLLLLEEEEAAAAASSSSEEEEE watch Joe Wilkinson potato in a golf hole task on Taskmaster
Ozzyman tasmanian bar fight please 🙏 😭 😢 lads
Yeah, that lot on the other side of the Cotswolds are a bit unhinged...
I love this competition! I think in America we have adults racing down hills in barbie jeeps and those little electric trucks for little kids😂
Surely it's only a matter of time before this becomes an Olympic sport.
This woman winner is an American. I just wonder if the American customs officials allowed her to take the cheese home or if she had to eat it before boarding a plane.
There’s a bed racing event in Yorkshire too,so I’m not shocked by this 🏴x
This is funny as fuck on many different levels
It's like watching a car crash........ you know people are going to be in pain, you're glad not to be involved, but you just can't help yourself - - you can't take your eyes off it.
As for how steep the hill is, well it averages out at 1 in 2, so for every yard vertically, you travel 2 horizontal................. pretty dam steep
its not eye of the tiger but "we are the champions" by queen
Just FYI cheese rolling has been going on for over 200 years. 😉
Ha just down the road from where i live :)
Ave ye done it bey?
Now thats what i call a coinsidance all the way from North Carolina where you come from to a cheese rolling contest in some backwood in the U.K.
Dorset have knob throwing festival a biscuit ball called The Dorset Knob
Guys i think you need to uphold the USA honour and compete yourselves!
🤣🤣🤣🤣 I'm crying here. Thankyou guys xx
I would love to see this in slow-mo with the chariots of fire theme playing in the background :D
Lots of theories as to the origins of this tradition but this from the 'Tradfolk' Web site;
Folk historian, Steve Roud, believes that the cheese rolling race is, “all that remains of the Cooper’s Hill wake, which was once held on top of the hill every Whit Monday and included many other standard features of annual gatherings, such as wrestling, shin-kicking, gurning, smock races, a maypole, and plenty to eat and drink. The cheese rolling itself, far from being an ancient ritual, is therefore simply the sole survivor of an activity that routinely took place at fairs and wakes up and down the country - providing, of course, that they had a suitable hill nearby.”
you dont know anyone from that state who would do that shit .... well .... you do now!
As a child, this was a common days playing out, sliding and bouncing down sandy hillsides with jutting rocks, and had obviously repeated in the same place for generations because of the grooves, now its all fall off a tuft of grass and sue someone because little tommy had sprained thier ankle.
Best commentary ever on this, and youre look of delight at being from the same state as the winner :D
As other people have mentioned, the uk is full of weird and wonderful events, one more local to myself and where i grew up is the "World Black Pudding Throwing Championships" normally held in a local town in September ....
I think the dude with the Casio guitar is a guy called “the doo” He is a popular CZcams creator if you haven’t watched any of his videos before I highly suggest you do he is a legend ps your channel is great keep up the good work!
I’m surprised there’s no US version.
That event is one of the stupidest fucking things I've ever seen, and I would never do it, but damn I'm glad it's back, and it's one of the few things that makes me proud to be a Brit 😂
Used to live just by that hill. Wouldn't catch me doing that though 🤣
Not a representative of your state Spencer? What a shame.
@no-one in particular This must be the best EVER!!!!
Free health care lads! One of the perks
The benefits of having free healthcare🤣🤣
Try interviewing the lady from north Carolina
You’ll have to come to Gloucestershire to watch it , it’s hilarious 😂
You cannot beat a nice bit of Cheddar, from Cheddar in England of course! 🙂 🏴🇬🇧❤🇺🇸
Oh, come on you must know her, she’s from your state, I mean we all know the queen in the UK!🤨
So when are you two coming over to do this madness 😄 !
I think you guys should come over & enter next years
Ozzyman is the best.
I live next to the hill and I wouldn't do it, much easier just buying cheese from Tesco's. mental.
You guys are awesome
So which custom did you per take in on you holiday?
I became a cheese roll.
You need to review Ozzy Man Reviews the pole dancing world championship
I must get to North Carolina if the girls there go down that quick.😍
🤣🤣🤣
That's why the English once ruled the world.
I live in that village 😅
The reason the world needs signs is you've got people out there that cannot see the obvious, honestly, they'll be like "Ohhh, I didnt know chasing cheese down a hill bouncing on my head causing my neck to go into 90 degree angles on all sides, thus now causing me to take 10 years off work and wear a neck brace for the rest of my life... I mean, who would?"
These people somehow manage to make it to old age... THEY PROBABLY HAVE KIDS TO LOOK AFTER, and yet... They need a f£$king sign for this sort of shit!!! :D
/rant
Back on topic... Top cheese rolling! :P
I love it ain’t so cheesy
I think that you must think us brits love cheese rolling, i for one, only found out about it 2 years ago, and I’m 32
I bloody love cheese, but not that much..✌❤🇬🇧
Is nothing sacred ? Americans coming over here and stealing our cheese ! For shame. ;)
Roll up, roll up 👍
Do you guys not fancy having a go when you come to the UK?
You need to look for frank boyle audience destruction
FANtastic!
