  • On August 13, 1908, Gujrati, age 21, living in the village of Unchagaon, India took a sea journey on a boat from Calcutta, India to Guyana, South America. She went to Guyana as an indentured servant seeking work and a better life. She survived the sea journey to Guyana and remained in Guyana, married and had three daughters. Attorney Gail S. Seeram is the great-granddaughter of Gujrati. Ralph Seeram, father of Gail S. Seeram, traveled to India to celebrate his 80th birthday. While in India, on November 27, 2022, they traveled to Unchagaon, India to visit where Gujrati was born. With the help of friends in India, Ralph Seeram was able to connect to his grandmother, Gujrati's family. Gujrati's brother, Kowlesar, had family still living in Unchagaon and Ralph Seeram was able to meet and connect with Kowlesar's family. Gujrati never returned back to India after leaving in 1908 but her grandson, Ralph Seeram, journey to India to bring her memory and honor back to India. Gail Seeram and Ralph Seeram were fortunate to journey and trace their Indian ancestry to the village of Unchagaon, located in the State of Uttra Pradesh, India. This video documentary tells a powerful story of a young and brave Indian woman, Gujrati.
