  • Along with the disassembled puzzle pieces that were formerly a complete pump from Diesel Creek, was a handwritten note “I came, I saw, I made it worse. Please fix what I can not! - Matt”.
A broken cam screw brought Diesel Creek’s DIY rebuild to a standstill, and off to the experts the pump went.
Will Pump Tech Corey get the Stanadyne DBG (DBGFC631-21AL) pump back together again, and inject life into this rustoration restoration?

The fact that he can identify a specific screw at a moments' glance on a pump he didn't tear down shows he level of knowledge on his chosen craft. Extremely satisfying to see him work!! I had an idea for Corey, which is take a socket and weld inside the lip, adding metal to approximate the shape of the broken screw, then use it to remove the broken screw, and if the screws usually break in the same way, then the same socket should be able remove those screws as well. One might also similarly add metal with a welder to a proper tool instead of a socket and use that to remove broken screws. Or weld a proper tool into the center of a socket?

ADS appreciated the breakdown discussion and assembly detail and component description. Your technician is well schooled. As a 64 year old retired diesel generator stationary engineer in a very large powerplant your tech covered more than I expected. If he used a small tig torch he could have welded a nut on top of the screw and the heat of tig and 5 sided nut might brake it loose. Spray inside of pump housing with anti spatter spray.

You know these pumps inside and out. No guess work. As a Ford dealership mechanic from forever ago, we had these pumps on the 6.9 and 7.3 IDI diesels. We could not change thing on them and we’re only allowed to check the transfer pressure. One issue they had was stalling when coming back to an idle. Gosh if I didn’t replace 100 of them over the years I didn’t do one. Unfortunately the rebuilder Ford was using was no Corey. Once I had to replace three before I got a good one. They were blaming me ! You guys are top notch and if I need a pump repaired your the guys!!!

I discovered this issue when I bought a John Deere 2020 from a scrap metal yard. The injection pump had to be rebuilt. The rebuilders had to get a machine shop to create a new part for the throttle advance. Years ago, John Deere recognized that that model of pump was defective and they replaced many of them. I thought that I got off easy with a cost of only $650. The tractor ran well. Of course I had to put in new liners and pistons.

I knew when he pulled the pump without the drive shaft his goose was cooked lol. I used to rebuild those Roosa's/Stanadynes up here in NH at Lakes Fuel Injection 25 years ago (when the DS's were failing left and right). At least the updated cam screws didn't break as easily.
Great vid, it's nice to take a stroll down memory lane, and also watch Matt make a swirl down the drain on this one heh heh

I'm a hoarder too. I'm 71 and I'm constantly repairing, creating, modifying, inventing. I think of what I do as making something out of nothing and the nothing I use is stuff that other people throw away. The most mundane little piece of junk can often be the perfect starting place for the part I need to make a repair or create something to solve a problem.

Kudos to Corey, for not only knowing how to put it all back together and make it work again, but his thorough understanding of how each piece functions, and how it all works together to make it all work, and the ability to explain it all so well!!! Keep up the great work guys!!! Cheers, Al

Thanks for helping Matt out, you've earned a sub, for that alone!
I had 1994 Chevy Diesel (prior engine to the Duramax's), that had a reoccurring issue with the staynadyne injection pump(s). I had 7 replaced during about 2 years, all were covered by the dealership, thank God. They finally figured out that the type pump was incorrect, and that my engine needed a "green tag" version. Even with that issue, I loved that truck. I finally replaced it with a 2004.5 Silverado Duramax, which is what I'll be buried in! Newer trucks are WAY too expensive, and the DEF fluid issue doesn't interest me.
Thanks again for helping Matt out!
