    Just drive a couple of 2 feet long pieces of rebar inside you're form before pouring concrete, should help with moving pad.

      @HomesteadingtheHardWay  Před 9 měsíci

      We tried drilling holes in the slabs and pinning them down with 3/4 rebar , just slid through this sand . We lifted a pad and poured the feet then pined the rebar in to hold it together it's holding but it's only been a few days if it holds up I'll do all the slabs we're having trouble with to save some time and concrete.

    Friendly pigs! My father used to tell how a guy at the stock yards showed him pictures of his 600lb pig laying in front of the fireplace. It was a pet and he couldn't hardly part with it but it was just too huge and unmanageable even though it was trained better than any dog he ever had. If you can maintain that friendliness gene you'll have a good line of pigs, much easier for people to work around.

  • @highdeseretranch
    @highdeseretranch Před 9 měsíci +2

    Chris, good to see you is doing well. I'm also fixing to pour concrete in my sheds, for the same reasons you are. Plus, I lost piglets due to the fine powdery dust inside the farrowing sheds. Lessons learned the hard way on the farm I reckon, oftentimes it is best to spend a little money upfront, otherwise you are tripping over dollars to save cents. God bless you brother and Darlene during this Thanksgiving Season!

    • @HomesteadingtheHardWay
      @HomesteadingtheHardWay  Před 9 měsíci +1

      We don't have much trouble with the farrowing houses, really it's mostly the boars doing the damage. My biggest concern was.cement being cold in the winter but we're puting several inches of sand on top of it plus bedding if it's cold

    try and get old chain link turn the points down, that what we did in a 100x100 foot lot, had 3 feeders in it, worked great! the points on the fence keeps them from rooting out from under it. i spent lots of time with them, so of course they may have been just happy pigs, took them to the processor at 7 months old, about 350-375 lbs, turned out great! looking forward to spring time again. been watching your videos for a while now, thanks for all the hog raising tips!!!

      These are just digging around the feed troughs not trying to dig out . Whenever you feed them eventually they'll make a hole in this soft sand . Same as breaking the panel it's coming from the standing on it waiting for feed

    I purchased a pig for "bush hog" reasons and to "plow" small areas for planting seed.
    Recently divorced and disabled..so money for getting someone to plow and keep the brush down was my reasoning.
    I've never kept livestock- so, I'm ignorant too it.
    For my purposes of having a pig, how much do I feed it?
    It is moved almost daily and has no bare ground when it's moved- so there is brush, tall grasses and weeds.
    Do I just give soaked corn or do I get hog finisher?..or both?

    • @HomesteadingtheHardWay
      @HomesteadingtheHardWay  Před měsícem

      I'd start with about 4 lbs of 16% feed and go from there by condition. They don't get much from foraging

    • @HomesteadingtheHardWay
      @HomesteadingtheHardWay  Před 9 měsíci +1

      That might not even be possible without making your own and that hinges on grain availability. The chain stores are way too expensive you can try asking around hopefully there's a feed mill or farm that's making some somewhere close by . Making your own is the best but you'll have to buy a grinder of some sort and source materials at wholesale

    Why not pasture raising pigs? Moving ever 5-7 days so they are on fresh pasture to supplement their feed with herbs and grasses. Saves having to clean pens, and it is great for soil health as well as pig health.

    • @HomesteadingtheHardWay
      @HomesteadingtheHardWay  Před 9 měsíci +1

      Big pastures are without a doubt the worst way to raise pigs possible. Easily ten times the labor and twice the cost not to mention land waste / destruction. What most people think they know about pastured pigs is completely wrong . We did it in the old days because it was the only way to keep the numbers we had before hog house 300 sows on around 30 acres .
