American truck are "bigger" (in volume), but European trucks are HEAVIER and have more POWER. The Max weight restrictions for American truck are 80.000 lbs which come down to 36.3 metric tons. In many European countries, the maximum weight are much heigher. In the Netherlands for instance the maximum weight is 50 metric tons (110.000 lbs) and under some circumstance 60 metric tons (132.000) lbs. And in Scandinavia even higher tonnages are allowed. Because of that weight European trucks also have (and need) more horsepower. European engines go up to 750 hp for Volvo and 770 hp for Scania (in standard trim). We need that power to haul those heavy trucks up those narrow and often very steep European roads. The flipside of this is that in Europe speed restrictions are lower and stricktly governed. All trucks must have a working tachograph that registers and stores speeds (and also data like resting times, etc.) at all time and maximum speeds are 50 mph or sometimes 55 mph..
