One of the healthiest epiphanies I've ever had about my art is SAY WHAT YOU WANT TO SAY, WITH NO REGARD FOR WHAT ANYONE ELSE WOULD THINK. If you can honestly express yourself, you will succeed.
What you express may not be what anyone else wants. You will succeed, but only to your self. But trying something you love is already a success.
@@Scolecite There is no such thing as "anyone else". What I mean is you can't just take whole humankind and call them "anyone else", it's a drastically various set of opinions and tastes. It's impossible to please everyone with what you do, even if you're Ryan Gosling, Stephen Hawking, Elon Musk or Leonardo Da Vinci. At the same time, it's almost impossible to make something that won't find it's audience, if it's made with heart. There are too many people, you know.

This is so true. A couple years ago I started making music I knew had pretty much no commercial potential and no potential for an audience, but itâs what I want to hear and itâs the most fulfilling feeling in the world to make a record you want to hear without worrying if anyone else will like it.

I think making art without worrying about the opinions of others is the ultimate freedom. I feel that's why basquiat and picasso embraced a childlike style, they were trying to capture the essence of when young kids make art without the noise and feedback of adult life.
I feel the same way about my painting. I just want todo what I want to do whether anyone else gets it or not.
I will say that every type of art has an audience, no matter how small, if that helps at all. You might not be creating "mainstream" music, but that doesn't mean you're not still creating something that has a potential following out there. But I still completely agree with your main point, sometimes as an artist, it's more important to just focus on making the art YOU enjoy, even if there is no one else in the world that will ever see it.
I just went your channel and listened to two of your songs. Dude, they are great! Meaningful lyrics, good vocals and melody, excellent guitar tones, very professional all around production. You deserve a lot more listeners. I subscribed to help you grow.

@@weerman44 yeeeeah, I love that. I agree, I think taking that specific piece of advice "if it can be better, it's not done" can be particularly destructive. I've fallen down that whole and artists i've known have had to take years digging themselves out of that type of thinking just to get to a place where they can make stuff consistently. I love the idea of making stuff for yourself

I think the magic in what Rick is saying is that he knows himself and what he is capable of. How many of us can honestly say what our best effort is. This is a very difficult place to get to. That's his great asset.

At the same time, he's honest about his capabilities, and he doesn't hold back from going at it. I think a lot of people have their standards too high (I'm guilty of this) and then don't go and make the effort to produce whatever is your current level, because you _think_ you should be able to do better. Of course this doesn't pan out well, since you won't take action that would make you better at whatever you're doing, and thus your potential doesn't grow.
What I'd like to learn, is to follow my instincts more. When I get an idea in my "antenna", I should act on that idea and see where it takes me, instead of turning to that overthinking mode and wondering whether or not I will like the result, or if other people think it's good or not.

Yes, so long as it's during the creative process and not an 'if only I knew then what I know now'. Eventually, we must put a full stop on projects and move on. So important to respect our past selves knowing that in that moment we were the most present, honest, and skillful being that we could be. Now that we have fresh insight, rather than look back, we look toward what we are going to make in this moment.
Rick is the man who gave Johnny Cash his second career and we should take his advice seriously.
He gave many many careers

@@brentleycraft "Just" Cash? I mean, to each their own and all, but I believe that before Rubin, Cash was the most influential, living musician in country music. After Rubin, Cash became one of the most important American artists of the 20th Century. Not a sermon, just a thought...
Rick has supported and been a catalyst that helped lots of really good artists. I read his bio and it is amazing. If you like music, you would love it
He didn't get a second career. Country fans didn't stop following Johnny Cash. Rick just turned on the alternative scene to Johnny. If anything, his later American stuff alienated some original fans.
Rick Rubin has such interesting perspectives. Most Artists/Producers I've heard so far in interviews say something like that: "a song could alway be better, but you have to stop somewhere". And Rick says "If it could be better, it's not done".
I know it's just words, but it just stood out to me, I expected a different answer. I guess it might have to do with how centred, honest and aligned he is with himself. He probably doesn't live with "shouldas, wouldas and couldas" and that comes through in his work. He probably just feels in peace when finishing a project and that's probably also how he knows it's finished.

Art is self expression. Practice is separating the signal (that which you want to communicate) from the noise (that which distracts from your message and should be discarded). Patience is working until what you want to express is coming through the best that you are able.
Dedication is not quiting until you cannot say what you want to say any better than you have said it.
Talent is when people like what you have to say and skill is when people understand it.

I tell you I make my art for myself and it helps me get to know myself better. Sometimes with artists, our art is the only way we can love ourselves at least in my case it got the ball rolling. This is wonderful thank you!
Exactly. This is what i learned. I like to figure out why we're largely drawn to certain things as a race, and one day it clicked. We're drawn to art so it can be a catalyst to go inward, to learn about and (hopefully) reach for higher states of consciousness. Because it was largely conducive to our survival, ultimately through the embrace of a more peaceful and loving energy. đ€âïžđ€đżđ€

As somebody who recently started mixing/dj'ing music...this is 100% correct. I enjoy playing for people and making them smile. Seeing people smile while I play music is the best feeling ever. Knowing that I did that for them. But also knowing that MY MUSIC...my tastes...did that for them. At that point we are sharing an experience together at that point. I'm playing what I like, and they also happen to enjoy it as well. I hear people always say "play to the crowd." Fuck that. I play what I want. If you don't like it, you can leave :) If you don't like what i"m playing, then we are not going to share that experience together. But you know....that's 100% Ok. I'm not being hateful. As an artist I'm never going to please everyone. And making that my goal is just silly. My goal is to play the music I like, music that makes me happy. Maybe expose people to something they've never heard before so they get to experience something new. And maybe...just maybe...make a few folks smile along the way.

This is the first time I've heard of Rick Rubin. What an amazing intellect. I love the advice about how you should make the art for yourself first. After you've done that, hopefully it'll resonate with the audience in general, if not, at least with someone or a few it will. For many this will be an epiphany. We should remember these words while doing our best. Truly inspiring message.

The relaxed confidence of the billionaire is amazing.... it's truly miraculous to see. And I'm sure a wonderful place to be - more so mentally than financially even because he had to arrive there (to the place of relaxed confidence) mentally first.
This talk applies to all the arts. It's easy to do mediocre work. And it's really hard to do great work. On rare occasions, someone can come up with a great song or great logo design in minutes. But those gifts are far and few between. And years of dedicated work led up to it.

I think this is all true for someone that is happy. If you are depressed or were raised by a perfectionist or many other traumas, I donât know how well it holds up. Someone thatâs depressed or raised wrong will not have confidence to think something is ever good enough. They wonder why they canât do what they know they should and have no drive to do them. That is a very different picture than this. Now you can fix that depression/trauma and then this is all true but donât feel like a loser if what I said applies just keep trying and find fulfilling things until youâre happy than the sky is the limit!

I, like most people, have been suffering from some form of anxiety and what he says about music is so true. It automatically reaches deep inside you and lifts you up. Idk where I'd be without music and sometimes I forget how much I need it.
Best advice I ever got was from a guitar teacher who told me "don't let getting it right get in the way of getting it done." And those words to this day well up to my mind when I get frustrated.
When I take in information my goal is not to form an opinion, It is to understand. Thats awesome!

This is super inspiring to me, working hard on our YT channel making things that I love, trying to stop doing this miserable labor job I've been doing for over a decade, a job that I don't want to be doing, wakin up at 3 in the morning, working like an animal. Heâs sooo right! The reason there is so much bad art, bad music, and bad creativity is cause most people that are making it have only their own popularity in mind.
I don't know... to say bad art exists seems to assume you know everything about where the creator of said art was coming from, or intending. I don't think you (we) can know that. In other words, just because I don't like something, doesn't make it "bad".

Most producers inject their own essences into the work but Rubin works like a therapist encouraging and enabling the artist to pour as much of themselves into it.
When he said that Johnny Cash had been discarded I just remember seeing so many times when labels tried to dictate to Johnny Cash what he should do and what he should sound like, and he forgot that he has a true authentic voice and it took Rick to remind him that people want to hear his true authentic voice and when that voice was matched with amazing lyrics they created appreciable work
This guy looks like I either shouldn't at all follow his advice, or totally absolutely should follow his advice.

"If you've done your best, where can there be regret?" That's ridiculously easy to answer. There can be regret in having done your best and yet still failed. Or to be doing your best and still be failing. Cause the goal is to achieve. It's not just to do your best and pat yourself on the back for your valiant participatory efforts. Or at least that's the way it seems to be for people who are still working at succeeding on the kind of level Rick Rubin has succeeded. It may be easy for him to look back and talk this kind of shit.. given that he's already one of the few producers on the top of the mountain.. and I don't really wanna be a producer. But whether Rick Rubin saying what he said.. or Miley Cyrus singing "it's the climb."... You can only have those perspectives if you've already achieved what you want to achieve. And most people don't. Otherwise there'd be a 1000 Rick Rubin's and a million Miley Cyrus's. #redundantasfuck
I think his philosophy must be relevant still for beginning artists. Heâs not saying âyou will never regret itâ, heâs saying that thereâs no real reason to regret it. This is a component of Buddhism and Hinduism as well, I believe. It is both true that one will inevitably regret things, and that regret is a useless sentiment, I agree with this.
I understand your point and I think thereâs some weight and truth to it! But I think this is the idea that you canât regret not making it, if you tried your best, because that means even at MAX POTENTIALâŠyou werenât enough. You may wish you couldâve achieved. But you canât regret it. Cause it wasnât meant to happen for you. Say I get a high paying job and keep spending my money on senseless stuff. By the time Iâm older and worked to the bone, I can say that I regret not spending my money wisely to make myself rich. That was an active choice I had made.
But if I had that high paying job, work like a machine, grow old and STILL have no money..whether from unforeseen circumstances or life just really giving it to meâŠI canât regret not being rich. Because being rich was never in the cards for me. But I sure as hell tried.

You missed the point. You have no choice but to put your best foot forward and to have no regrets. You have zero ability to go back and change the past. Resentment towards yourself and reality gets you absolutely nothing. You feel sad and frustrated and miss out on the experience youâve been blessed with. And if you carry this attitude throughout life, you feel miserable, spread your misery to others, and die an earlier death. If suffering this fate is worth defending your pride then go ahead, its your choice
For me the result is never the goal so failure isnât about âmaking itâ itâs about becoming the best and giving the most to others I know I have
And the reason he can speak on this is because of experience. Without experience how would he be able to talk about it? By the way, he's not redundant. He's a special person to me and I know the story of how he started and his journey along the way.

Can see why some artists would hate working with him, but he knows what he is talking about. Rick has produced some of the best albums of all time imho. Across a crazy spectrum. From System of a down, to Metallica, to pop and country artists. He knows no bounds. Interesting fella for sure.
Practice what you preach, Rick! Most of artists that he produces nowadays are "manufactured" keeping meticulously in mind broad audience.
