What's The Right Delay Pedal For Bass? | The Pedal Studio

  • I'm often asked "what are your reverb settings?". I do use reverb sometimes, but it's rarely the reverb that people are asking about, even if they think that's what they're hearing.
    I've used delay for over 20 years, and this video takes a look at that journey from the Alesis Nanoverb, all the way to my current presets in the Lin6 HX Stomp, and my journey of how to find the right delay pedal for bass.
    I've included performances of Bostrom Bagatelle, Poet's Walk, American Elm, and a solo improvised piece. And I used only the HX Stomp preset for the entire video, right up until the very last chord where I pushed a little Iron Ether Frantabit and FMeron through the HX Stomp.
    I have no doubt that I will always be tweaking the Line6 HX Stomp, so make sure you check back in with the discussion from time to time, or drop a comment below the video if you're curious about a particular aspect of the programming. I welcome the conversation, and look forward to seeing some people use this preset in their own music.
    I've made my first preset for the Line6 HX Stomp, and you can find it at the following link: janekgwizdala.com/store/jgbas...

    Favourite one so far! Having followed your music for quite some time now this really explains your thought process and tonal choices in such depth and honesty. It is super inspiring to others who are also finding their sound. Thank you for this, Janek!

    I Love this Pedal Studio series, i like pedals too and these videos always inspire me to explode what i have. My reverb and delay are the trinity and the alter ego2 by TC Electronic and i love that they also alow me to keep trails or get more chances to tweak stuff like you do with the toneprint settings, it very fun an interesting what you can get. Thank you Janek for the experimantation with pedals and gear that you put out bc it helps a lot.

    Great sounds, Janek. As much as I enjoy seeing any type of online content about effects, I particularly like it when veteran musicians do rundowns as you know they've really utilised and lived with the sounds they're demonstrating.

    Just discovered your channel but really loving your vibe. Great content and beautiful music. I’m an intermediate bassist, i play with jazz and rock bands. When playing alone I tend to gravitate back towards guitar for making music and creative composition . Your approach really inspires me. Makes me want to concentrate on using bass for creative purposes more. It’s really awesome.

    I’ve had the same BOSS dd-3 digital delay for the past 15 years. Works like a charm. Hands down best delay I’ve ever used. I can hammer nails with it that’s how tough it is.

    Knowing the gear you have is better than buying new "better" gear. Glad to see how organic your delay development has been and how you didn't move forward without also being able to integrate your past tone.

    Great insight into this delay evolution. Thanks. I use a boss dd7 and ehx canyon wet into a micro mixer. You can then have the wet higher than the dry or what ever you want. My oc3 in poly mode is mixed here too. Loads of easy options😀

      @janekgwizdala  Před 4 lety +1

      SOOOOO many options right? I'm torn between thinking I went through tons of pedals, to looking at the bigger picture and realizing there are literally at least 100 more viable options. But happy I did what I did, with what I had.

    Came for “what reverb?” and stayed for the delay! I have two boss delays, a DD-7 and a DD-8, and I am going to see if I can find a setting that gets close to this

    Loving the preset. I swapped out the Kinky boost for the new Rochester comp (which is just... holy hell- thanks to Billy and Jon and others) which keeps the sound a little cleaner with my oddball basses. I haven’t delved much into the snapshots, being still fairly new to the Stomp. This preset has really shown me the power of them.
    I recently heard that if you set a looper block in multiple presets you can keep a loop repeating from one preset and layer it with another. This preset just happens to have an empty block at the end which I’ve found useful with a looper. I don’t have the midi switching or expression just yet, but that’ll be coming along.

    • @janekgwizdala
      @janekgwizdala  Před 4 lety

      Thanks for the feedback! And yes, I should have totally included a looper in that last block. What was I thinking?!?!? I guess that only really works if you have the external switcher. But good info, appreciate you checking in after getting the patch.

    • @Terrible_Peril
      @Terrible_Peril Před 4 lety

      Janek Gwizdala I appreciate you making it available. I know I’m still pretty miffed inside that I have gotten zero feedback on the preset I shared on the customtone area of the line6 website. Shared it in groups, it got a crapload of downloads, way more than I anticipated, but not one peep about it from anyone.
      Well, it’s called Thundercat, and it was the first thing I tried to create with the Stomp. You can guess the inspiration lol

      Looks like the Mission expression pedal model for the Line 6 Helix. It has a foot switch output in addition to the expression output, but he's only using the expression output. It can be seen in one shot in this video (17:10). The other Mission exp model available for Line 6 devices is identical only without the toe foot switch.

    Janek, you considered playing with a Kemper? Takes pedals in front of it nicely like an amp, and there the ability to run favourite modulation effects in a send/receive (of them on the floor model) and loads of effects inside as well as another looper you may employ ;)

    • @janekgwizdala
      @janekgwizdala  Před 4 lety

      I think I'm still a little too old fashioned for amp modelling, and I just enjoy the sound and feel of my amp onstage when i'm playing my own music. Who knows though? That could be subject to change if my live circumstances were different. I could see the value of amp modelling on a huge pop gig for instance. So we'll see.

  • @nephilymbass1
    @nephilymbass1 Před 4 lety

    Yeah your lead sound is tight . I stole your settings for the nova repeater pretty much lol. I used to try to use reverb for Lead type stuff but I think it sounds more focused using delay than a reverb pedal. But main gig is a 5 piece rock band so I theres very little bass soling type stuff. Just a couple intros and stuff where I use your type of sound. Not trying to totally rip you off. My favorite ways to use my delay are for playing double stops and swelling into the Delay. And also what me and my friends call “Hollywood endings” where there is a lot of secondary attack and repeats in the delay and I just click it on the last note of the song and slide up or down the string to get crazy almost glitchy type sounds

    Janek, powering the HX Stomp, particularly on the road, it needs 3Amps; what is your powering scheme for the higher amperage consuming pedals? Thank you for all the info!

    • @janekgwizdala
      @janekgwizdala  Před 4 lety +2

      Actually, it only needs 1a/1000ma... So I use the Cioks DC7, and have a splitter cable that allows me to use two 9v 660ma outputs on the power supply, and feed it into one spot for the HX Stomp. You do need a specific specific Cioks adapter for the HX Stomp, but it's easy to find on their website, and not expensive at all.

  • @eliassirvio2779
    @eliassirvio2779 Před 4 lety +2

    Why do you use the HX Stomp instead of the HX Effects? Isn't the HX Stomp mainly an amp modeler? Wouldn't the extra effects on the Effects model remove the necessity of having the external foot controller?

    • @janekgwizdala
      @janekgwizdala  Před 4 lety +2

      My concept is more along the lines of not basing my entire rig around the multi effects processor. I want to be able to integrate the processing power, and features of the HX Stomp, into my board, while still being able to have a ton of flexibility to use whatever stomp boxes I want. The Effects, Helix, or Stomp aren't complete solutions for what I do. I can definitely see huge value in the larger units, especially the Helix and the Helix Rack, if I were on a large pop touring gig. I would program the entire show in one unit, and forget about it. But with what I do with solo shows, improvising, and being in a jazz setting more often than not, the Stomp gives me a ton of options without clouding the overall picture of my sound palette.

      Scott Devine shows one in his videos about his 5 favorite pedals, he mentions mainly for practice also, but I was thinking like you, lay down a pad of the reverb enhanced ethereal sounds, but Janek points out with the expression pedal he can cut them off to avoid muddling the next chord or drone note, avoid discordant, etc.

    That’s not true about the DL4. You can definitely use a delay with modulation at the same time as the looper. I’ve been using it for about 15 years and I still use it almost every day.

  • @lorpal1
    @lorpal1 Před 4 lety

    curious why you didn't go with space time on that eventide I keep seeing in the background...

    • @janekgwizdala
      @janekgwizdala  Před 4 lety

      Because you unfortunately can't then use it for anything else. And seeing as how I use delay more than most things on my board, it would be like committing to a $699 delay pedal. With the HX Stomp I can literally use it for everything else at the same time as getting my delay from it, and then free up the Eventide to be used for what it is, which is a single stomp box that has a bunch of different sounds essentially.
