A little sexist, I've never carried enough to gender check people on the side of the road... but the point about the vehicle choice still rings true, the advertising for those vehicles, especially the Jeep, are the "Handle everything and can off road" so people think that means they can drive the same way regardless the condition. We've created an image that any form of SUV/Truck is an invincible road warrior.
That said, 5-8 years ago I spent 3 years driving all over the Toronto - Kingston - Ottawa corridor through everything including blizzard. I was smart enough to put snow tires on my Toyota Yaris and it handled 6 inches of snow and my wits and back lot practice for the ice are what saw me safe through 6 years of East Lake Ontario weather.
Any car can be safe, any car can be dangerous. Except for physically stuck, nearly any situation can be surmounted on the road, hell, I was stuck in a ravine and it took reducing my tire pressure and following a snow plow to get me out.

More weight on the driven wheels helps you launch, it has nothing to do with safety. Porsche 911s are surprisingly good winter cars supposedly for the same reason.
FWD is safer when you crash because understeer means it'll more likely be in a straight line, and cars are built to handle crashing straight in to things better than spinning and potentially sideways/backwards/both.

    • @Skirk84
      @Skirk84 Před 7 lety +3

Most people dont even know what offset is En Tee, let alone how to calculate it when buying a new set of rims. and that goes double for people on the internet/youtube commentors. Every car looks better when the wheels arent sitting 6 inches inside the guards, or the wheel fills the arch more completely after lowering it or buying taller tires... to a point obviously. I dislike it when you cant see the top of the tire, or the wheels sit so far out they are 100% going to come in contact at some point in their life... people trying to 'stance' their car.
But commoners will just see black and white, either its stock or its stanced. They woudnt know how to improve wheel fitment or ride height if you held a seminar on it.

The Viper is a pretty misunderstood vehicle from what I've known about it. It's actually not that difficult to control once you get used to it, like adapting to a new and foreign environment. And that it's actually a front mid-engined car like the Corvette. All in all these things are easier to tame than some people initially anticipate.

I've had 4 different sets of snow tires, on 4 different cars. First set was a set of winterforces studded on a 2010 aveo, best snow tire I've ever had. I did things I really shouldn't have done with those tires, and didn't feel unsafe once.
Second was a set of blizzak ws80's on a 2012 civic, better than all seasons but nowhere near the firestones.
Third was halfworn goodyear police spec snows on a 2011 cvpi, they were decent.. half worn when I got the car though and it's rwd so not really a good comparison.
Fourth set is a set of nokian hakkapelitta r2's on a 2013 fusion. They are almost as good as the firestones were, but still can't touch them.
I'll never buy another set of snow tires that isn't firestone winterforces, unless they discontinue or negatively change them.

I have wintersports on my car. The stock summer tires stuck great in the summer but where horrible when the road temps dropped below 40. It didn't matter that I only drove on nice dry days. So I bought winter tires to get my sports car to stick in the winter temps and as a secondary mission to get me home if it snows a little by surprise. I figure a lot of exotic cars hit the ditches because of high performance tires not sticking to cold roads.

  • @nfsdrive

I am a Canadian who has owned two Vipers in the past. The 1994, with a custom hardtop & windows, is the one I drove on average 15,000 miles/year. Because, I often drove it high speed the Viper was always kept in top racing form and tires changed way before their time. Lots of open road in Canada where I'd often cruise at 120-165 mph when there was no other traffic near me. At 150 mph in 5th gear the car just hummed along without appearing to overworked even a bit. It was a good handling car on average to good roads. The most dangerous part of driving the car which a sane person would have avoided. Is to try to lay lots of rubber below 40-45 mph while just cruising & not in 75-100% acceleration mode. If you happened to be dumb enough to do it outside of those parameters the car would snap right instantly the momentum and with it the left-side of your head would slam against the hardtop and the rest of your body would also violently be pushed left. Fortunately, you could recover because your foot on the gas would also been moved off and the car could be easily straightened out. This could have been disasterous and an accident caused if there was a car travelling parallel on your right side. ... I didn't like driving it in the rain and avoided using the car on those days opting for my All-WD instead. If I had to drive in the rain it was never over 60-70 mph because the car always felt like it was on the threshold of hyproplaning and could easily lose control. Forget driving it in snow that's for idiots even with the best winter tires. To many other crazy drivers out there who don't know how to drive in bad weather. Plus, if you don't have an all weather (and all year) vehicle(s) to drive when the weather is bad then you shouldn't have a Viper in the first place. As soon as the weather (with or without snow) got to the freezing point (frost on the road) my car was parked until Spring. ... For further details about Viper handling in good weather. Do a search on CZcams for some of the automotive/speed/racing reviews that can be viewed. ... In closing, I've sold the Vipers, but still love the car. I'm considering buying another for old times sake, preferably a GTS model which is on my bucket list.

But as far as all the nanny features lacking on this car - it doesn't matter, it's just a question of what the driver is used to. To this day I've never driven a car that did have those features, except for some rare occasions driving cars with ABS. And if I got into a panic stop with ABS, I know I'd end up doing the wrong thing because my instincts are programmed for doing my own driving.

If you grew up driving with out any aids/nannies then it's really no big deal at all.
It's the people that never became competent with out the aids and have lived their whole driving life with their car taking care of them, they are stuck now and can't drive competently without the car trying to protect them.
I find the aids tend to correct so aggressively that I turn them off for 95% of my daily driving, I have more control when the car only does what I tell it to do.
ABS is the only aid I'm somewhat in favor of though. For a number of years I drove a mid-engine car with no ABS and a light front end, now I've got my cadence braking down pat, but I remember the times I didn't.
My newest car is a 2015, but before I bought, I made sure I could fully turn off the stability control and traction control, that was a deal breaker for me.

    • @bobhope4288

ABS/EST/TC are all "driving aids", they aid you in driving.
Aid - to help, assist or support.
Nanny is a slang term for driving aids because like nannies who were hired to help you, they often kill all the fun and force you to behave, they're driving nannies.
Nanny - a person, typically a woman, employed to care for a child in its own home.

It's a Mopar vehicle, so the radiator failed. I am talking from experience, as many Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep vehicles from the late 90's upwards use cheap plastic radiators, that only get about 100,000 to 150,000 miles out of them before they crack and need to be replaced. I just had to have the one in my Jeep replaced after 106,000 miles, did exactly what the Viper did, puked coolant everywhere. There's a reason they have earned the nickname "Moparts."

I had a RAM SRT10 with 305 series perelli's. 4 sandbags in the bed and it was the best RWD vehicle I've ever had in the snow. Just because an engine "CAN" make a lot of HP it has no bearing on the driveability. I think Doug doesn't understand that when people say "The car is dangerous" it's already implied that if your foot is down, as in lifting or braking in a skid. ABS isn't there to be your nanny. It as nothing to do with part throttle winter driving.

Cars don't kill people; people kill themselves in cars..
Same logic that guns don't kill ppl, ppl with guns kill ppl ...
If you're not capable of driving a car , even if it's not a viper, with no traction control nor stability control, then don't drive it... period...
Stop making false pretenses that the car itself is most dangerous..lol...
Fyi, I'm not speaking in regards knowing that Doug tested the car in the snow.. it's obvious he has no snow tires and that he's just messing around.. he's not that stupid...lol but I'm letting you know my statement does not revolve around that..
    I own a 06 Viper and an 06 M3
I put 15k miles on my viper and no problems at all..

Years later, coming back to this...I really don't see much difference with the 1990s Dodge Viper compared with any other car from that era-even the cars with T/C & ABS. Just be a sensible driver and you're fine. Even my 2000 VW "New Beetle" With 16 valve 1.8t gets loose & has crazy torque steer in the snow with all of it's 150hp when driven like an idiot and it's ASR is broken from old age/electronic failures...
Come back North Dougie! We miss you! Ever since you moved to Southern California...the world has gotten so much worse(probably not your fault, LOL!)

I love how he insists the car is totally safe in warm weather, then proceeds to list how few safety features the car has. Like ABS, Traction control , stability control. So you mean to tell me adding 450 hp to a car with none of that it a-ok? So in other words ABS, Stability and traction control are all complete bullshit? Naw. My friend owns the identical car. He often cites the very rawness of the car. He calls it a V10 Caravan. It requires experience and extreme focus when driving.
