I had to hire actual squirrel exclusion professionals to finally solve my squirrels in the attic problem. They removed 27 pounds of acorns and walnuts from ny attic. I do not have an oak or walnut tree anywHere within walking distance of my house. I had squirrels pounding on the new screens, having squirrel tantrums, because they could not get into their old club house. We had multiple chewed wires, nests, and other horors. My thoughts are with you as you fight the squirrels. They are no joke!
As an artist, your attention to detail cannot be rushed. Work is looking so good and you must be proud!
I love seeing you working on the mansard roof and the paint an colors look fantastic. The new paint looks fantastic and it makes the house look loved and cared for. I think the activities you are doing now are absoloutely appropriate to get the restoration done as efficiently as possible.
Great choice of paint, it looks beautiful. There was a debate in Norway whether we should go back to traditional paints as they let the wood breathe in a totally different way as compared to plastic paints which trap moisture inside and rots the wood faster. Which is one of the reasons why modern houses rot faster than older ones.
The colours will truly make your house pop in the neighbourhood.
Loved our rooftop tour! There are so many details that are missed from a street view. So spectacular!
Hi Caleb another impressive step into bringing your home back. Keep up the good work. A lot of people don't understand all the prep that's required before you can add a drop of paint. Yes, squirrels are a pain in the _____ .
So are starlings! I covered the vent they were nesting in and they found a little hole where the gutter meets the roof. Grrr!
When we moved into our house which had been vacant a number of months the squirrels had made a home in our attic. One of their favorite things to do was play soccer with their collection of walnuts at night in the area over our bed. I heard squirrels described as cosmetically enhanced rats with a press agent. It was a challenge to get them out of the house.
I found one in my house the other day! It got in through the dog door.
Loving all the new work. I really enjoy your channel. Thanks for sharing this journey with us all 💞
Swede here. A church in the village I lived in was getting restored, someone forgot a rag when they were just about done. Set the church on fire and ruined all the work, the church was stone so it was saved but all the interior work had to be redone.
Linseed oil paint is kind of a traditional paint in Sweden. Also there has been a trend/interest in restoring old houses here since the 90's, We've had many TV shows about restoring houses and things since then! I can imagine that's why a lot of Swedes frequent the house restoration content on youtube! I genuinely curious why we do that, I always thought that was common everywhere.. turns out it's the opposite! That said, in the 50's and 60's we were also all about modernization.
Restoration is definitely a trend in the US, but it varies from location to location. It really kicked of in the '60s & '70s with preservation movements fighting old buildings getting torn down for modern monstrosities, gutting downtowns for parking, and all that. Some areas have better access to companies, supplies, and knowledgable people than others. I've seen linseed oil house paints on the market here, made in the US and Canada. It's more of niche product though.
@@claudiadarling9441 Thanks for the insight!
If a house could make facial expressions - yours would have a huge smile right now. You have made great improvements - especially since the day we stopped by and left you the note of encouragement in your mailbox. Keep up the good work Kaleb and Kim❤
I groaned out loud when I realized you had to strip the modern paint you'd put on the new decorative trim 😭
Also, did we already know you'd restored a different home (old pharmacy)?! For some reason I thought this was your first restoration project. I figured you were just naturally good at everything:)
You totally glossed over the HUGE milestone of the Brown house being in good enough shape for you to permanently move into it?! 🥳🥳🥳 CONGRATULATIONS on selling your place, I'm so excited to continue following this journey - been here since the beginning, but don't comment much - I had to make an exception today :)
its not sold yet (or listed). still preparing it for showings.
@@johnkennamann1462 Missing something here. I see you replying to many messages and wondering your relationship with Kaleb and Kim? Just wanting to know because I am a nosy old fart😁.
@@robinredman5192 He is calebs dad
Looking forward to seeing more colour and new wood going into the front of the Mansard roof.
I’m so excited to see the long awaited roof project! I’m so excited for you that it’s getting so close to getting done! I love your paint color choices!
The old girl is starting to shine again. You’re doing a great job!
These colors are beautiful. Their past side gives even more character to the painted parts 👍
One thing about stripping the paint off that new woodwork, that process will probably actually make it look slightly more weathered and more in keeping with the extant original woodwork.
How exciting. I use to help my dad mask cars prior to him painting them. My GOD the Masks 😷 he would wear…because of the Toxins. I’m so happy for you to see you working on this project has been so fun for me. Sending you blessings and encouragement. 🙋🏻♀️❤️🔥🕊️
What a big difference this painting has made! Kuddos!!!
It's going to be beautiful once it's all done!
YAY! Back to weeklies again! Looking good! Gotta love the squirrels and birds! They make such a mess, don't they?
The rooftop was impressive but also freaking me out - be careful up there!
Oh boy this is starting to get really juicy now, can't wait to see the new wood going in, the paintwork looks amazing
Hello from Ireland! I saw your first video about 5 months ago and then binge watched from the start and now have caught up to see your progress. You are so wonderful for all of the dedication you put into this amazing house. I really appreciate the research regarding the history of the house and the humanity you bring to it with the information of the original owners and their importance to the town. I truly enjoy your heart and soul in regard to keeping history alive through your hard work in this restoration. Keep up the great work!
I know when your house gets fully restored, the house will look stunning. The amount of hours and restoration projects you and Kim have already accomplished are so amazing. I’m already getting excited to continue watching your journey of your home.
It’s really starting to take shape. Can’t wait to see those new mansard pieces going in, and that corner closed up to keep the critters out.
Mr. Caleb, the house is starting to look so beautiful. You are amazing. Thank you for sharing and God Bless you and your family.
I love the color choices. Green is my favorite color. Your views are amazing.😊
It might be worth adding some metal mesh over the areas where the squirrels have been coming and going. Just for a short time until they know they cant get back in. The paint looks 😘👌
Some poison bait
all of the wood is painted first with a coat of wood life. it protects the wood from mold, and animals. makes it taste like shit to them.
This is going to be amazing!! I have been watching for a few years and it is awesome to see this being painted!!!
That is going to look so much better when your done 💖👍so glad to see people put so much time and hard work to bring something back to its glory !
You're*
Oh. I always put the oil-soaked rags into the fire pit and burned them. The ASHES aren't a danger. But, that was the way we did it back in the '50s and 60's when I worked my husband's way through graduate school as a painting contractor.
Hi Kaleb, fine job you're doing, as always. The fact that you now have to remove paint from something you did earlier just goes to show the difficulty of restoring. The lady WILL be beautiful one day. Thank you, and Hi to Kim.
Gorgeous! The colour choices look amazing.
Well done Caleb. Yes, a deck up on the roof would be a really nice idea.
Swedish linseed oil paint is also used at the windows of Versailles. 😀 Greetings from Sweden.
Great job. I love seeing the restorations of these national treasures
WOW the street looks fantastic from the roof!
Seeing the view at 8:23 makes me so excited, the difference between the 'primed' and the primed and first coated section of wood work is amazing!
LOOKING GOOD indeed! Sheeeeet! 😍
Love the colors. You are doing such a great job. I can't wait to see it when it is done.
Wasn't to sure that green would look good, but it really does have a good appeal to it.
The mansard is going to be absolutely glorious when it's complete, such beautiful craftsmanship! And heck yes to a deck up there!
I’m not sure that’s possible, there could be regulations again it, and plus a fall from such a height would likely be fatal ☠️
The little goofy grin I had on my face when seeing the parts of the mansard painted.
The corbels are beautiful, good job.
Cant wait for premiere! Hope its a long one!
Ive been bingeing old videos today when i should be working!!
Thanks for the warning about linseed oil rags. Not everyone knows this and you may have prevented someone suffering a terrible loss.
The colors really do make the difference on the exterior. It's great to see another weekly on Monday.
People don't think of squirrels as rodents but they are. Your patience is beyond my comprehension.
You have such patience to work on all that detail. The mansard is looking great. You explain things so well. Looking forward to seeing your old house and the renovation you made on that. You and Kim have a wonderful week also!
That's a lot of dental moldings and corbels to paint. I can understand why you jumped ahead to get some color on to show off the details of the decorative moldings.❤.
Looking forward to seeing your first house!
it always amazes me how people think all oil paints are made the same lol everything you stated is exactly right. i dont think people understand this paint is different than regular oil based paint in my opinion thats why its superior to regular oil based paints. i love the color scheme
Loved the Rooftop View! Also nice to get a quick glimpse of Kim😊
Having had problems with squirrels in our roof I can sympathize with you. We found that plugging holes with steal wool and covering the opening with some tin (like a lid off of canned corn, etc.) keeps them out. The roof is looking really great, and I love the colors you have chosen, she's looking really beautiful1
Kaleb, the home is really looking amazing! Also love watching Mike from Australia! He’s doing amazing work also. Thanks for the recommendation!
A rooftop deck sounds wonderful. Just be sure the roof rafters can support the weight of the decking, furniture, and any stairs you might build to get up there.
He showed inside the flat roof, i remember the joists looking very substantial
Bit funny that word 'Ardbeg' can mean a ~high small place. When your restoring a place so high up.
Thanks for the video!
You look so tired Caleb! It’s hard to rest when there is so much to do. It is looking great! The colors are wonderful. So sorry you have to take off the primer, but you’re right. Better now than later and better on the ground than in the air! God bless you!
Fun to see the sneak peek at the color scheme in place. Kudos for persevering on this worthy project.
From day 1 I have enjoyed your videos Kaleb. Every one of them I learn something new, thank you for that!
By the way, YES build yourselves a beautiful deck up on that roof….if you can…wow what a view!!
I am so excited to see this. Since you started, the mansard was my biggest area of concern. It looks wonderful - I do hope you can get everything replaced and dried in before winter. Congratulations on the big step forward!
Glad you had good weather and thanks for reminding the public about linseed oil.
Linseed oil soaked rags:
Starting convenient fires for decades now!
😂
I see You got Swedish paint. Linoljefarg I’m loving it 😊
So much Work, but worth it. Love the two shades of Green ! As a Fan of Period Architecture and once having a dream to be an Architect. I am REALLY ENJOYING your Channel ! This Grand Old Lady is going to be BEAUTIFUL when you finish her !! 😊
Ok George Costanza
The Lady is looking good. I was wondering why you didn't scrape those boards above where you are working first thing, and glad to hear they are being replaced. I hope you get a lot of work done before winter sets in.
I really love the red/green color combo. With the views from the roof (neat to see the Arch and church steeples!), I note that most of the houses across the street are brick. With your lighter stone, and the great colors you will use for the trim, your house will stand out, while complementing the others. I too have a tendency to 'jump ahead' to painting and choosing hardware, etc., to keep myself motivated on a big project. It can lead to things I have to undo or never use. Oh well. :) Looking forward to seeing your pharmacy home. Hopefully the proceeds from the sale will put you in a good position with your plans for the house, and maybe acquiring Mr. Hall's lot. There is a great restaurant in Prescott, Arizona, called Murphy's; it's housed in an old pharmacy as well.
You are doing amazing work. Your house is beautiful. And you finding time for the history behind it! Incredible
Good advice on the rags spontaneously combusting. Many a barn and garage has burned down because of that back in the day.Everything is really looking good. That grand old lady is definitely going to be a beautiful house again.
Summer is almost over. Be nice to have a colorful home to work inisde this winter. It will be inspirational to your work ethics. And, your neighbors will appreciate it. Curb appeal.
Quite a task to sand and paint all those intrincate details!!! Well done!!! It will take a long time to get it all done. I trust you have the needed perseverance!
Good morning Kaleb 🌞
Good Morning !
Scraping multiple layers of paint is an agony!! The end result is well worth it however. Love the colors you chose. Can't wait to see it once the capital cresting is done.
Thank you for pointing out the hazard that linseed oil can produce. Worked with a boyfriend at a manufacturing plant that utilized this in finishing the wood portion of their product. He worked in this department. No one ever explained to him WHY the used rags were to go into a metal can after use. He had wound up tucking one into his coat pocket and taking it home. Woke up the next morning seeing my foyer filled with smoke. Realized where it was coming from and chucked that coat straight out the front door onto the sidewalk, he goes out to retrieve his coat thinking I was crazy, until he pulled the smoldering rag out of his pocket, didn't believe me at first when I told him what had happened.... had to google it. If I had slept in, my home most likely would have caught on fire.
That is so scary! I'm glad you're both okay!
Hey Kaleb! We are in the area and drove by last week. It was great to see the color on the trim way up there.
Looking good. Wish I was your neighbor across the street. I would be spending all my time watching you!
🎉
Hi! Were coming through STL in October to go to Springfield for our Aunt's 90th birthday celebration. Im going to ask my husband to drive buy the house. Well be stopping at the Hill to get our favorite sandwiches to eat. Love the progress! ❤️ Kim & Kaleb.
It's looking so amazing. I don't know how you decide where to start. So glad you are the one who bought this beautiful place.
Detail! I ❤it. Also you have the best music! Lastly as you were on the roof looking out over St L. I envisioned that street 100 years ago with the church and all those beautiful homes in plain view. I betcha that was something….💭
Looking better each week I was thinking same thing a deck would be great such a shame all the missing historical homes, I'm sure in it's hayday must have been some sight, least your there now to advocate for these rare forgotten beauties
What do we leave behind ? Better yet .... what do we bring back, restore, preserve ? You two are amazing !
Look forward to seeing your first project! The roof is looking great! That colour is original but so nice too! Your exuberance is infectious !
Your doing a great job can't wait to see when it all set and done😎
yipee now the fun stuff starts...so exciting!!!
Hello Caleb... Everything is looking great. I can see it coming together. It's Awesome. Hugs.❤
Congratulations on selling your old place.👍🏼 It is great seeing some of the paint going on. Thanks for sharing it with us.
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼🌹
Spectacular details. It must be very satisfying for you.
Green was a very popular color in the Victorian era so much so in some Victorian houses even the wall paper is green. Essentially the green was a status symbol it meant money and the more green you had told guest's just how rich you were.
Thanks for not giving up on the ol’girl. Day by day she’s coming back to life.
Painstaking work, but so worth it! So happy your lift is working!
I get so excited when your videos post. I really look forward to them.
absolutely awesome episode!
A roof top deck would be fabulous!
Yay, colours! It's looking better and better.
If the squirrels are bothering you, maybe put Chippy on display as a warning. 😉
Or Atlas. He'll show them.
Coming together piece by piece ✨️
I can't wait to see the new roof 🎉
Good morning! Glad to see you!
That lift is even better than scaffolding. It's worth whatever you paid for it.
