god I hate these people who say dune is a slow film as a negative. I hate how some people think fast pace always means great direction.
It's such a lame excuse for laziness. I get that Dune as a world was already so dense that making a movie about it is extremely difficult, let alone 3 of them if the progression is to be believed. But it just speaks as this refusal to engage with what's going on.
Netflix shows and Tiktok ruined people's attention spans and ability to digest information.
dune 1 was slow by cinema standards but i loved it, dune 2 felt very rushed and i did not like it as much as dune 1
If people are bored they're not going to enjoy a movie. So yes, slow = bad. Welcome to the 21st century, we're not here to watch a snail movie, you've got 2 hours to tell a story, get to the point.
You can see the same effect in shows where people like to call slower paced episodes "filler", and I hate that word. Those are most of the time the best episodes for character and world building. Some simple people just want to see explosions and fights left and right all the time and have forgotten to actually enjoy and think.
Jessica was terrifying. One of my favorite aspects of it.
I loved how quickly she lent into the whole thing and got the face tattoos. And when Paul told the reverend mother to be quiet, that look Jessica gave the RM was so good.

I laughed out loud last night when stilgar went “of course he would say he’s not the chosen one” perfect delivery and sadly tragic that it shows how deep his faith is / blinding it is
This was the best moment of the film imo

Paul taking the name Muad’dib was probably my favourite scene, so charming and well played. Also loved seeing his mother become more and more sinister until she is essentially another villain.

The people I was with didn't understand why she became like that, I think people who haven't read the book couldn't understand that the water of life increased her powers 10 fold so she could hear her ancestors and the other Rev Mother's consciousness way more clearly, even to the point they could possess her
When her mentor acknowledge her of her new title at the end, was the silent cherry on top

I'm inclined to say Jessica is my favorite character of the movie, but it's pretty close with Paul
For a story that influenced so many Chosen One narratives, it’s always been ironic how Dune told a cautionary tale for those portrayals of messiah-like complexes. Glad Dune: Part Two stuck that landing.
Yes the book made that clear in the sixties and has been discussed everywhere a thousand times. But very original of you.

I mean given the movie is an adaptation of said book, it's a good thing to hear they ended the story on the same notes.
Actually the first Dune novel, nor either of these movies, really show the downside of following a messiah. That's all in the second book, Dune Messiah. Dune is a rise-to-power story, Dune Messiah is where you see the dangers of following a charismatic leader. In the first book (and these two movies), you still consider Paul a hero. By the end of the second book, you'll see he is an anti-hero.
@@clinteastwood14896i actually disagree, they start hinting at the antihero aspect of it right from the start, with the revenge discussion Paul has with Jessica. They clearly start showing it after Paul drinks the water of life, and we find out he’s half Harkonen. The ending does nothing but show him as an antihero with the Chani storyline. Chani herself is constantly hinting at him not being a hero, but just a person, and Paul tells us himself when he says that shit will hit the fan if he goes south, and it does.

Did you notice he no longer seemed small and thin like he did in part 1, even though physically he's identical here?
Timothy has similar scenes in the movie The King. Very good movie as well.
@@blkchs I first watched The King shortly after Chalamet was cast in Dune and that movie made me certain that he’d make a great Paul Atreides. He did great in both roles!
My favorite sequence of the film was the meeting in the southern sietch.

@@hvitekristesdod I'm a huge scifi fans, with all the rave reviews everywhere, i didn't expect it to turn out to be one of the most pretentious, boring and dumb sci-fi movie ever. Everyone in it is either angry, sad or depressed. No wonder they want that spice so much, to get high and escape from this depressing world.
The worst thing about it is that everyone in it is utterly charmless and unsympathetic.

I was grinning ear to ear when the Harkonnen were flying up the rocks at the beginning of the film. That bit felt extremely special and unique.
The only thing I could think was"If they can fly why are they walking in the sand where the worms are?"

@@simulacrae When it already established a pattern in the 1st movie then we can infer that there is limitation to flying so nobody fly all the time.
Either they need to be near a ship that guide their flight like the sadaukar's deployment scene, or energy is extremely limited.

When paul had the emperor kiss his ring. He had stomped his foot, almost like a bull who's ready to charge. The same bull that was foreshadowed in the first film. This movie is definitely a step above the first. Loved it.
The emperor didn't actually touch the ring with his lips tho

There's only one scene where the Emperor kisses the ring in Dune: Part Two. His lips never touches the ring.

If you think Dune 2 was slow paced you’re not ready for 3 it’s just gonna be Paul being depressed af for 3 hours
Messiah is sort of slow, but also pretty dense with a heck of a lot of intricacies. I think it will be exciting when the audience discovers the truth about Paul, and the Jihad, and they see Hayt/Duncan again,. Even if there isn't as much action, it will be very engaging.
@@faded1to3blackI think they’re going to supplement the action by actually showing the jihad in the beginning. Also I think the second movie did a phenomenal job of portraying the “real Paul”

@@cha0tix46 an intro showing a taste of the Jihad would be a fantastic way to introduce it. Like "Hey, remember this guy you were kind of rooting for? This is how it ends up, and here we are now". I only kind of agree on showing the real Paul in the second half. Implicating what is about to happen isn't going to hit the same as actually seeing what he does, and the ramifications of the Jihad, or the number of souls dead by his leadership. That's going to be a big shift. Book fans know what's coming. I don't think general movie goers get how far this is going to go.

@@Fervor2Germinate I did feel like it was perhaps a little out of character. I think there were other things she could have done to express her anger, disappointment, etc. than to slap him in the face.
@@PatrickVerst Right, I agree. Especially because Chani was also really rooting for him at one point helping him camp in the dessert, and like why is it his fault that he woke up!? Like that moment where he drank and survived the water of life was so epic and I literally had goosebumps watching it up till that point she slapped him, killed one of the most powerful moments and prophecy fulfillments. Then after the slap they cut back to paul but the moment was kinda ruined. I feel like with a lot of the editing they didn't stay and linger on the big parts or give time to digest and sit with the giant moments, but that slap was a big boo boo in the middle of epic music and scenery and story point.
I was surprised how alien and foreign the film felt at times when it needed to while also anchoring us to the humanity. Sci-if, fantasy, suspense, romance. We got it all here.
Yeah. Every scene with the Harkonnens, especially the Giedi Prime sequence, felt so far removed from humanity that it fell into the uncanny valley
I love how, through the portrayals of Chani, Jessica and specially Paul, they make it clear that this is not precisely a "hero's journey", Frank Herbert's intention in the first place
If anyone thinks Dune is a "hero's journey", that's on them.
Dune has Hero's Journey, aka monomyth structure. Without it, the story could not have been the way we know. Without it, a story like that cannot be told. Because it is actually the circle of the protagonist. The evolution. It is becoming a hero but not always the type of "Hero" we know. The hero means here is the protagonist. It is a life journey. It is becoming something different than who the character was in the beginning of the story. Joseph Campbell gave examples from classical mythical heroes. But this model can be applied to any kind of protagonist. He or she can be good in essence like Luke Skywalker, William Wallace and Katniss Everdeen. Morally evil, unstable, problematic or ambigious and blurry ones like Coriolanus Snow, The Bride in Kill Bill, Micheal Corleone, Paul Atreides, Anakin Skywalker, God Emperor Leto II, Young Cruella in Cruella (2021), Walter White and The Joker. This monomyth is the discovery of one's own self. And not every person is meant to end up following the goodness. Some discover the fact that they have to be evil or more ambigious, namely, beyond the good and the evil.
Paul is in the last category like many other Dune characters.
But this does not end here. Gray and blurry is not gray and blurry for everyone. Some people accept the fact that there is gray. But this does notneman that he or she see it as morally ambigious or a thing that can be tolarated. That person can see it as another kind or a degree of evil. Or some people see it as way harder version of goodness. A good artist ends up writing more meaning than he or she initially planned or thought while writing. The subconscious makes him or her pour more than he or she imagine. This is the magic which make the story even richer and complex. Frank Herbert gave spesific and unchangable messages in his novels. But these are only his ideas about the topic. Some people can understand these differently. And this shows us who we are. Indeed, this is also the case for the real life. For example, a person can believe in a charismatic leader fervantly even if there are reliable evidences which prove that leader's true face is not healthy for the people.

The sheer scale of this movie is crazy. The stuff that they pulled off is INSANE. Absolutely a milestone is science fiction filmmaking. Genuinely shocked at how much Denis got away with in Part II. Deeply rooted in religion and overall bleak by its end. They have to let Denis make Messiah.

I’m going to be honest when Alia asked Jessica “What's happening mother?” and Jessica reptiles with “The Holy War.” I cried, because I have read all six Dune books and the ones a re-read the most are the first three Dune, Messiah, and Children of Dune. I left like Paul, knowing what’s going to happen in the future but powerless to stop it. I loved this movie so much, I’m probably going to watch it again.

The effects on the Harkonnen planet were so insanely cool. Like living in a Rorschach test come to life. The fireworks and the lighting really worked well. Paul turns around the time of his resurrection because he believes he can now see the future clearly. I think that sudden changes might annoy some people but i loved it. Before that I kept thinking this movie was going to end on a cliffhanger because there’s no way enough can happen to make this character do a 180 in the time remaining. That “poison” might be more referring to poisoning their minds as well as their bodies. Both Paul and his mother are drastically altered by it. Her because she’s pregnant and him because he’s a man. Maybe men weren’t meant to take it because they’re too power hungry and when they get the sight they can’t help themselves.
Geidi Prime is saturated with oil and filth. The fireworks looking like exploding oil was absolute genius

The planets all feel like they could be galaxies apart. The scope of the movie blew my mind. I saw it Thursday night and I can’t wait to go see it again, I feel like there’s so much I missed because I was awe struck half the time

It increases their power by a factor of a 100 because they can survive drinking it, but to most it is poison that will kill
The idea of a black sun is pretty cool. Wish we actually got to see that sun.
The way Paul changes his persona from a down-to-earth humble boy to a reluctant messiah is kind of like a live-action version of Eren Yeager to me. They both see futures that are set in stone and are dreading what they’re going to have to eventually do in them. Thought that was an interesting connection
YES, most definitely🙊👀. I think Eren’s journey is much more dower and traumatic, but I noticed those similarities too.

It's been a couple years since I saw season 2 & 3 of AoT but once king Fritz, the paths and ymir are introduced I remember excitedly recognizing Dune & God emperor of Dune ideas.

I know Star Wars was influenced by the original Dune, but I saw so many parallels between Paul’s ascent to power and Anakin Skywalker’s descent into darkness; both visually and thematically.
Ghanima/Leto = Leia/Luke.
I just realized that dune has a noble boy(Paul) raised on a lush water world(caladan) fall in love with a girl(chani) from the desert (Arrakis)and star wars has a boy(Anakin) from a desert world (tattooine) fall in love with a noble girl (padme) from a lush water world(naboo).

The film came out on Wednesday in my country. I left the house as soon as I could, bought an IMAX ticket, and time completely stopped for me for 2 hours and 45 minutes. I left the theater feeling like I just had a spiritual experience, the same way I felt with LoTR as a kid.

Yes! The Imax sound was awesome during the combat and worm scenes - the boom-boom-booms of the artillery.
I'm with you 100% and I just said to my wife that no film has made me feel like this since the LotR trilogy. I'm back home after having seen it for the second time and I'll watch it again next week, simply for the IMAX experience.
I have always thought we'd never get a trilogy/saga quite like LotR ever again but we just might, if Part 3 sticks the landing.
I love how it starts inspiring and starts to slowly become foreboding. The audience begins to discover what kind of story this is. In that moment the thin layer of the heroes journey is shattered. The moment where Paul Atredies' true destiny is revealed in all its horrifying glory: A golden path illuminated by a universe in flames.
I think most people won’t care and will still support him. Just like they do Joker and Anakin

@EzraM5 Eren Jaeger literally has an almost copy-pasted arc involving a coming genocide and people still say "he did nothing wrong." People are too easily swayed by their connections to a character so I 100% see this happening for Dune as well.
Paul's line at the end of the film (I believe it is his last and even the last line too, but not sure) ''Send them to paradise'' is my favourite line perhaps ever and it's not even in the book.
That to me, cemented that Paul was willing to do what needed to be done, to remove his subjectivity from the equation and focus on the path. Putting aside his own wants and desires, giving the Fremen peace and the power to pave their own freedom.
His betrayal of Chani is another example of this. Sure, his heart wants his true partner, but the success of his political position requires the daughter of the late emperor. He's choosing her to benefit others.
Yeah he said, “Lead them to paradise.”
I agree! The fact that this was such an important and seemingly positive line throughout the film, then to have the final line spoken with reluctance/resignation (but then met with exaltation from the Freman) was perfect!
Plus "sending them to paradise" has a double meaning of course: that they will go to paradise (the afterlife) because they're so likely to die in the meat grinder of the upcoming war

When faced with the ultimate choice aka the golden path , he walks out and let himself be blind unlike his son who understood the assignment, stopped being human and was called a tyrant for more than a millennia
regarding the last fight scene, with natural audio, Maudib, got stabbed in the lung, and you could hear it in his breathing, a gurgling sound, THAT pulls you into the scene more than any music, it was perfect.
That confused me. He got stabbed in the lung, but he pulled the knife out of his shoulder?

A cool fact about this movie is that the second kiss between austin buters character and stelan skarsgards character was unscripted.
Everything is scripted. That's a cooked up story. False like Hollywood itself.

Paul’s mother drinking the Water of Life first to create an expectation to the audience of what could it mean if Paul drank it was a perfect a way to create a soft landing for his instant character change after drinking it was perfect cause once Paul drank the audience was already expecting him to be something different and damn it delivered.
Stilgars line like "only the true Messiah would tell you he's not the Messiah" immediately reminded me of "Life of Brian" and I found it hilarious 😅

I found the scene where Stilgar calls Paul is the Messiah even when he says he's not heavily similar to that one infamous scene in Life of Brian - "would you please listen? i'm not the messiah" "he is the messiah!"...LMFAO
That was almost the entire movie. Paul could have taken an epic shit and stilgar would have screamed, "Lisan al gaib!!". It was a bit much tbh. I get what they were trying to do but it just became somewhat comical.

@@c.d714 it was intentionally comical, but in the end when Paul fully realised his prophecy, you can't blame stilgar for acting that way. I'm not a Christian but i was picturing myself in that era, let's say i was a non-believer, and hearing people like stilgar trusting a prophet would make me laugh. But when that prophet starts doing stuff which I can't even imagine ever in my life? That would for sure make me a believer as well. That's why in the end it felt more serious and it had more impact

I can't believe this movie exists, let alone it's so damn good. As a big fan of the book I was very curious to see how it would all play out and it did not disappoint. What a movie, will watch it several more times in the theatre!
Yeah, just finished and it almost doesn’t feel real. It does not feel like a story that should work at all for a movie.
I have confidence that this Dune trilogy will go down as the Star Wars of this generation

I think they have to go all the way to book 3. After that is where the story actually pauses and skips hundreds of years. Book 3 actually brings a lot of the themes and warnings full circle, so I'm hoping they also adapt children of dune.

I liked the fact they actually showed the vision of the fundamentalist Fremen praying at the skull shrine of Leto - a vision that was only referenced by Paul in Part 1. That vision seemed so primal and perfect for a movie like this.
I saw this yesterday - absolutely stunning. I audibly gasped at a few moments
My wife has never read the books and loved the complexity and depth of story. Proof that you don’t have to dumb things down so non book fans can understand
Seen it today and loved it. Denis Villeneuve doesn’t disappoint. Definitely one of those films you got to watch in theaters. The sound design, the epic shots of grand landscapes, spaceships and worms of mindbending proportions. Cant wait for part 3.
I just saw it in IMAX. It is one of the best directed films I have ever seen - from the breathtaking battle scenes to the intimate moments. Villeneuve is a god right now compared to anyone else. Never seen sci-fi, let alone epic sci-fi feel this real, both physically and emotionally.
Saw in imax as well. I couldn’t believe how incredible the experience was. Music sound visuals etc. Floored me.

Someone actually asked Villeneuve about the music video with Walken. He was aware of the video, but never realized that it had a Dune reference. A crew member had to tell him that after Walken was already cast.

Does anyone wish the final war scene was longer or was it just me? It was awesome it just felt like it only lasted for a second and then it was gone.
Yeah, I definitely felt a slight 'rushed' elements at times in this one. Most notably when Paul travels to the South, it was like "okay, go catch up with your mother" then boom, he's there and drinking the water of life. That whole scene and then the big war moments felt super rushed. Movie is still a masterpiece. Just not flawless.
It was kinda supposed to be like that. The Fremen were superior to the Sardaukar and Harkonnen troops, the worms also made it worse for them
Its actually relatively much longer and more detailed than in the book. that whole scene happens over a couple of pages where they detonate the atomic and then pretty much walk into the emperors tent. The last few chapters of the book happen very quickly so it was cool that the film tried to slow it down a little, even if the pacing still seems a bit funny compared to other films.

Saw it last night and my god man... if you are someone who's still not on board with Denis Villeneuve as one of the best directors ever I have no idea what you're doing. Since we are on a spoiler review I'll say it here now. Directors... PLEASE use this movie as a reference for how to shoot action. The duel between Paul and Feyd-Rautha at the end is how you shoot action. No quick cuts and shaky cam. Perfection!🙏

That final fight had me on the edge of my seat and I even forgot to breathe. The fact that I already knew Paul was winning that fight yet it was still an intense, nerve-wracking duel is insane. One of the best hand-hand/knife combat scenes in Hollywood imo. May thy knife chip and shatter!

He's good at shooting action for sure, but when it comes to fights, look to Asian filmmakers the most. Their stuff is perfect. But yeah, Denis & Greig Fraser did their thing with this & the previous film.
I loved that kind of heel turn that Paul makes after drinking the worm liquid. After that he just flips and becomes the opposite of a messiah.

I just wish we got to see more of what Paul sees when his mind is opened by the Water of Life. Like what do people see when their mind awakens? This is a phenomenon that happens in the real world as well, supposedly, enlightenment and such. Would be really cool if they explored that even more, exactly what made Paul change as much as he did towards the end.
Yeah, that was one of my few disappointments. Paul's new level of consciousness could've been expanded on a bit more. Especially if they're planning on adapting Messiah, because like the entire plot hinges on the mechanics of his future sight.
Absolutely. I had to look up what actually happened after he drank the water. In the movie it seems like as soon as Paul wakes up he's just gone totally psycho/evil and that's not what actually happens at all. Unfortunately I think most people will be just as confused but won't bother to look into it. It could've been done a little better.

I was quite disappointed tbh, they were building this up to be an epic encounter and all he does is walk up to him and stabs him in the neck and poof hes dead. Very anticlimatic
One thing I cannot get over enough is the soundtrack. Every theme for this movie feels alive and enthralling just like the world of Arrakis.
The love theme, I guess you could call it, between Paul and Chani maybe one of my favourite pieces of music ever written. It's so simple and powerful at the same time.
The music was an improvement on Part 1. Sometimes it was a bit too much and annoying in P1

The only thing that really bithered me was that they make the "riding worms" like a big deal at first, we see how difficult it is for Paul to ride one. And in the next scene we see them using the worms as a "colective fast travel" method. I mean, how those people got on top of that worm? How they get out? Jessica on that basket, how she was put on top of that worm? The movie never explains that and I really don't see any logical explanation for it.
I thought it was unintentionally hilarious how in the end Zendaya is like "fvck this, i'll just go home, where is the nearest sandworm?", like someone whos taking the subway or something 🤣
its like in GoT where dragons start off as make believe and at the end of the show they use them like airplanes.
I wonder if they changed their style of editing for Part Two. Because something of this movie feels drastically heightened than Part One: the colors are vibrant, the score has more depth/weight in scenes, and the placement and lighting in shot compositions are superb!
Such an incredibly tragic story. I'm just in awe over what I experienced while watching this film. I understand there seems to be a lot of hyperbole surrounding this film, but once you see it for yourself, you'll understand there is no overstating how incredible this film is
What an incredible experience. Three hours flew by. Top 10 theater experience for sure and as much as I enjoyed the first this one really blows it away. I didn’t think Chalamet could reach that level of intensity.
I saw this at a big screen viewing which also had like some haptic feedback for the sounds. And when that grandfather sand worm appeared. MY GOD. The sound design, the music, the visuals. I felt like I was going to melt. Just stunning.
The movie opens with the Harkonnens burning Atreides bodies by the pile. And ends with Fremen burning Harkonnen bodies by the pile. An awesome way to show that nothing really changes on Arrakis.
What an absolute visual spectacle this was. Completely agree at how the vfx are worked into the film making it seem natural and practical. I also love the films ability to balance the qualities of spectacle with quiet reflection. It's not in a rush to get to some grand climax & the fight between Paul & Feyd seems simple yet weighty at the same time.
I think that's the key to perfect fantasy, coherance. If your setting, characters, costumes, props and writing all look and sound like they belong, then a massive VFX shot will also. There is no "look at those special effects" when a ship crashes into the sand, it's "look at that ship crashing" because your mind believes it within the context of that world. You don't see Zendaya or Chalamet, you see Paul and Chani.
I went to watch it in IMAX 3 days ago and it's really gorgeous. Even at almost 3 hours, it's never boring and I could even watch another 15 minutes more, because I felt the last part was a little bit rushed and they defeated the Emperor's army too easily. But anyway I'm going to watch it and enjoy it many times more.
1:10. What an understatement. That isn’t just any “blue liquid”. It’s Spice, the very drug at the heart of the empire and the major driving force of the plot. It’s what bestows upon the Bene Gesserit their mystical powers and humanity a prolonged lifespan and the ability to navigate between the stars. It’s also the source of conflict between Atreides and Harkonnen and why they’re on Arrakis in the first place. Just a small detail that Chris seems to have omitted.
Despite hitting all the cliff notes plot points from the books, they really skipped over what makes the Dune universe so unique. How spice works for navigation, the weirding way, mentats, the spice cycle, the humans' aversion to AI . . . so much left out.
Almost none of that is even brought up. Apart from the little blurb at the beginning of the first movie. I figured Spice was just some kinda Space Cocaine and everyone wanted it because it's a universe full of Space Tony Montanas. I just got off the phone with my brother and he explained a whole lot of what spice does. The movie made a lot more sense after he filled in some really massive gaps for me.
The movie doesn't fully explain it. Like I personally assumed it was distilled spice, but at a glance it could have been different chemical. They don't really talk about spice much in the films they mention it maybe like 5 times tops in the context of a drug and the rest of it is as a mineral that needs to be exported.
Soo many of the shots in the movie in IMAX absolutely took my breath away. The harkonnens in the first fight ascending the dunes. Falling in rhythm after. The entire sequence of the worm riding especially the first one by Paul. The entry of Paul into the south where he is welcomed as a messiah. The war sequence in the end with the nukes. The entry of the emperors ship. The knife fight choreography between Paul and the baron. Insane sequences throughout. 2 hours and 45 mins went by in a flash.

As for the the little field mouse and Paul's humbleness... In the book, he knew exactly what he was doing choosing that particular name. The movie leaves that and some other stuff for interpretation, I guess. Hence the way you saw it. And I'm not saying you're wrong:) I will now need a rewarch of both films to be able to distance myself from the books and try to watch it as its own story, considering some of the changes done.
Yes, Paul is pretty power-hungry and arrogant from early on in the book. He's not hesitant and conflicted about being the messiah, unlike the movie. He manipulates the Fremen. Also, he's very much in control of his choices rather than Lady Jessica leading him down that path. At least, that was my reading of the book.

I love how this movie kept me in awe without really doing anything groundbreaking. The effects, the writing, the acting, the visuals. Nothing is really out of the ordinary, and it's not pushed as such. They just used whatever tricks and tools that they had to pure perfection. Really cool stuff.
Considering that the story of Dune came out in 1965 and back then it was indeed groundbreaking seeing as how it inspired everything since, I would say the ending part really seals the groundbreaking with Paul triggering his Jihad genocide across universe and you realizing that he is not a hero in any way.
Just saw Dune 2 last night. It's everything you've mentioned. It's so good that I'm seeing it again this Saturday :)
I saw this in Imax yesterday, and it was definitely both amazing and mind-blowing in every way. Plus, that title drop towards the end of the film has to be one of the most hype ones I’ve ever seen.

Went to the midnight showing last night in IMAX. It's genuinely the best cinema experience I've ever had and one of the best experiences in anything I've ever had.
Love the review and Stuckmann's material as always. Have to point out though that Fatboy Slim is not a band as mentioned in the vid but an iconic artist, DJ and producer.
The biggest flaw I could see in this movie was the part where I could clearly see that the crowd was just a small group of ten people copy-pasted during the arena scenes.
Yeah, that's the _biggest_ problem.
There is nothing bigger, because everything was pulled of quite well, even with how much stuff was cut from the books.
It's better to look and Dune I and II as just one film. Dennis is a master director. He's the king at making intelligent, grounded stories that don't speak down to the audience or play in the realm of pretentiousness. Best director of this generation IMO, call me a simp for him, I don't care.
I saw it in theater in Manila and it was a visual cake! Gorgeous shots one after another... my favorite moment was when Paul and Chani running for cover after they hit the 'chopper' and then the pause before it crashed!!! Epic picture composition! It was so good having the whole theater for myself but sad realizing that no one was as hype as I was to go see it in openning day. Great review as always!

A beautiful film, perfect pacing and visuals. Superb acting all around. Austin Butler was super weird and disturbing as Feyd Rautha. Happy there were no gross out gore scenes like in Lynch's Dune.

I absolutely loved this movie. The only thing I didn't like/get is that they didn't include Thufir Hawat in Part Two (played by Stephen Henderson in Part One).
I thought that was a really great character in the book, and kinda missed him in the Harkonnen storyline
they actually shot scenes with Henderson for Thufir Hawat for Dune 2! He’s credited in a special thank you although his scenes ended up getting cut out (probably for length/simplicity)

Am I the only one who felt the transformation of Paul was kind of rushed? Like he was refusing to go South for the entire movie up until that point, and then 10 seconds later, he's drinking blue worm piss. It doesn't seem like he really struggled with that decision at all.
On the flipside, Jessica's development was done spectacularly. Rebecca Fergusson was my favorite part of the whole movie. She was so understatedly menacing with outbursts of the Voice. Compared to who her character was in the first movie, I'll admit I did not see that coming.
Also, I'm really disappointed with how they treated Austin Butler's character. He was introduced and built up to be this really good villain, but then they started and ended his story within half a movie. I wish they had shown more of his campaign in the North of Arrakkis.
I feel like they could have made this entire movie about Paul's time with the Fremen, his rise as Muad'Dib, spent more time with him struggling with the decison to go South while Faeyd is starting to turn the tide of the war.
With Faeyd's success, the pressure is mounting for Paul to go South, fulfill his destiny and recruit the millions of fundamentalist Fremen to fight back. When he heads south, he is slowly convinced by Jessica to fully embrace who he was meant to be, leading up to him drinking the poison.
In parallel, they could have shown Jessica's turn and built up Faeyd, and the entire second half of the movie could have been Dune part 3.
It seems like Paul went drinking poison to attacking and defeating the Emperor in 5 minutes. The second half just felt a bit rushed.
I read the book a few days ago, and I watched Part 2 on Wednesday. I honestly feel that there is half an hour missing. The first half of the movie was very good, and towards the end things get rushed a bit.
I think this has to do with the changes they made. Honestly not featuring Alia is a 50/50 move. Like I understand that a 6 year old killing the baron is a little bit whack, but I read somewhere that the entire movie takes time in a span of 6 months? Like what. They could've featured baby Alia, Chani and Paul's first kid and then let Feyd-Rautha kidnap/kill them so to up the stakes.

With all of the amazing space-age technology that exists in this created universe, somehow every conflict ends with a kung fu knife fight.
Given they have a very warrior like culture, it makes sense
One thing the films don’t mention is that if they use lasers on a shield, the shield becomes a nuke and wipes out everything in its radius, which is why melee is preferred
it's mostly because of how shields work. although the movie doesn't explain the interactions with different projectile weapons very well, if at all.
Epic, I saw this at 11:30am opening day in Imax. The only way it should be seen. Or at least see it in a theatre. But wow, amazing. Great work Mr. Stuckman, couldn't agree more with everything you say here. keep up the excellent work and best of luck with your own endeavours. I tried at one point and didn't see it through, I hope you do.
I must say, I loved watching the viewers who didn’t read the books! Because Villeneuve is micro-dosing the information they only slowly realise how insane this universe is. So hyped for Navigators, Tleilaxu, Hayt to appear. I still want to see how Navigators fold space e.g.
I’m not a big Sci-Fi nut, but THIS movie melted my face off and OBLITERATED my fucking brain!!! This is a phenomenal film, one that’ll be talked about for decades to come, comparing it to other sci-fi flicks in the future. The bar has been raised in massive ways! Insanely gripping and beautiful. 9.5 out of 10 for me!

As the reverend mother said: there is no sides. The movie doesn't say that any dmsort of faith is good or bad. The story tries to give a non-naive insight into what mess the world is. Everything that happens happens for a reason. And not because the good ones have to win.
Paul says it to win we have to be Harkonnen. The movie shows clearly how the Freman have personal power and honour and integrity because of their faith. There are no victims in this universe.
Theres one acene with Chani giggling right after shooting down the harkonnen ship, i just love it. All sound was gone but the giggle, and i feel elevated the conection wih Paul perfectly.
I just love that crazed omniscient look in Paul's eyes after he drinks the Water of Life. Accomplished with a bit of eyeshadow, and the mind of a very young and creative actor!
It isn't hyperbole or recency bias to claim that the last 30 minutes of the film holds the title as the, "Best Battle in Sci-fi" period. I have seen every Star Wars film and TV adaptation; every Star Trek; Battlestar Galactica, Stargate- all of them and none of them hold a handle to the shots we saw in this film. Sitting in the middle row, watching this film on IMAX, with all the sounds and the sheer spectacle of that battle in the desert, with all the drama and tension interwoven into the action on display, truly makes it the battle battle ever produced for a science fiction film, and that doesn't cover the other aspects of this film.
From the dystopian nightmares of Arrakis and Giedi Prime to the horror themes interwoven with nods to Gladiator and Blade Runner this film has everything that makes science fiction great. Words will cannot convey how I feel about this film, it truly is that good.
I found it interesting the choice of the book storylines that wasn't included in the new film. Gurney's mistaken understanding of the guilty person in the house betrayal. or that the war to retake the planet lasted years and in that time Paul and Chani had a son until he was killed by Sadukar right before the dule. The birth and capture of Alia. The Chani Liet family connection is not mentioned, the planet ecology storyline is vastly reduced. Changing the blackmail plan into nukeing the worms, instead of poisoning them all in a chain reaction with the water of life. 😮 I think that's most of the missing storylines.
There's just no way to include all of that in a movie that can at best run for 3 hours, unless it get like crammed in and then it would be a mess.
You forgot Thufir, one of my favorite characters. Forced to work for the Harkonnens, is told to poison Paul at the end and doesn’t, basically tells the Emperor to fuck off before he dies.
The book purist in me hates that they left so much out. I won’t be able to get over them effectively axing Alia, I hate that so much and it hurts the film tremendously for me.

Just watched Dune 2 and man it was absolutely incredible, one of the best movies I have seen in a long time. The cinematography was so good, the entire movie and set pieces were all beautifully shot, the story, action, epic Hans Zimmer soundtrack, everything was top notch. Denis Villeneuve truly one of the best directors today. The cast was great, Timothée Chalamet gave the performance of a lifetime and stole the show as Paul Atreides.
A truly worthy sequel. So excited for Part 3.👏👏👏👏
This was, IMO, an example of a perfect text-to-screen adaptation. Everything they changed from the book, especially the way they handled Alia, was the right decision to make it work cinematically. One of the most airtight book-adapted screenplays I've seen in a long time - there is not a bad or out of place line to be had anywhere, and every character is perfectly utilized as much as the story needs them.
What an amazing, entertaining and unique movie; the style was, let’s say, almost ethnographic
