    Hi Dave, I am 63 and I have been playing the guitar for 50 years. I really wish I had seen this video when I was 13 because I have taken far too much notice of what people around me have said I should do. It’s only recently that I have started to do exactly what you are saying and now I am finally me!!!!!!!!!! 🎸

      There are 1000 dudes on youtube who can play a mean solo, and some great blues licks. All great guitarists, but they can only do it for a few minutes, Dave can do it for 10 times as long and it's allways new and fresh.

    Had guitars knocking around for nearly 40 years and always just done what I've enjoyed. Not very good, only really know a blues scale and some chords, but love making a noise some times. Often ending in noisy grunge. It's about fun and enjoyment. Whatever you want to do. Happy playing everyone. Thanks Dave for the inspiration. ✌️👍

    Yes, you are 100% right with rules and competition. I hate the "who is the best guitarist" thing and I have been told, that I hold the guitar completely wrong, but it works for me. And I also don't want to sound like someone else, I want to sound like me. That does not mean at all, that I don't like advices or hints what I can improve. But I decide, what works for me and what does not work for me.

  • @lazysyds
    @lazysyds Před rokem +3

    Great video, internet people need to watch this, I agree 99%. The 1%, from the perspective of an electrician, is your understanding of signal chain, the signal is generated by your guitar and results in what comes out of your speakers, what you do in between is indeed a matter of choice, but the way you described signal chain would be leading someone up the garden path rather than down it. Nice work Dave ;)

    • @budgetguitaristcom
      @budgetguitaristcom Před rokem +1

      Two people out of (currently) 147 pointed this out, and you're correct - signal flow is a law of science, not a rule. Obviously the point of the video is that art isn't about rules, and I agree 100%, and I've loved this channel (and Dave) for a long time. He inspired me to open up a few times on my own channel about depression. Rock on, Dave.

I really love that amp too, and they sound great in Stereo with my JCM800. That's when it dawned on me that maybe "everyone" doesn't know everything. I do play just about only Gibson guitars. "Do not walk against the wind , try to walk with it) ! & still learning new things every day .
    I love your videos when you play Hendrix ... I've just played 60+ gigs with a Rockabilly band , before that many years in my Bluesband & been touring with another Hard/Rockband around the mediterenian in summertime .

    Absolute truth from Mr Simpson. back in the 80's when i first started gigging and touring "seriously" the guitar world was blighted by this "you MUST do it THIS way" attitude. And it was often wrong. The two glaring ones for me was firstly most guitar magazines (no internet back then) all propaganda'd the myth that thinner strings "rob" tone. They do not. Anyone who says they do is simply incorrect. Yes, if you downtune or whatever there is an advantage in the feel and stability. But the best tone is up to you and your ears, dictated often by feel and playability. I used 9-42's from day one. Still do. But back then I had countless "experts" tell me i'd be better off with a heavier gauge. And of course I tried it. I eventually out of curiosity A/B'd the sound on my trusty Tascam 4-Track and.... no difference! But the journos were "oh yes there is" even though many who interviewed me were forced by me to admit they hadn't done their own A/B test!
    The second "biggie" was the advent of the effects loop in amps and the insistence all pedals go through it. Sure I tried it but tweaking one day I found I preferred my delay and chorus through the loop but my distortion and overdrive in the front as "traditional". So i did this and stuck with it. Again I had countless sound engineers and roadies suggest this was "wrong". But they all had to admit the sound I was getting "rocked" or whatever. Course this technique I stumbled upon is now the main "rule" commonly known as the "4-Cable Method" and people like Dan from That Pedal Show can tell you why it works. But back in the day??? No, no, no, no..... you're doing it all wrong! But its gone even further with many not even using the effects loop and putting everything in the front.

    So many guitar-based You Tuber's follow the 'received wisdom,' Dave, and one of the things that makes this channel so great is that you never have. You always ask questions.

    INDEED Dave. My mooer fuzz pedal sounds better after my ds2 but the “norm” is that fuzz goes first. Maybe the circuits depend on order, but I totally agree. Do what works for you!
    Also we’ll never have anything new if we all just copy everyone else before us.

    I put 9's on my Les Paul and literally felt guilty because I'd read you shouldn't do it on a forum. I started playing in the days when to actually see (not touch) a real live (second hand) Strat in a shop, we all had to pile into a car and drive for an hour, but at least in those days no-one on the internet told you what to do because there was no internet. Go figure!
