  • Only 18 holes remain in the 2014 USDGC, and only a stroke separates Paul McBeth, Will Schusterick, JohnE McCray and Patrick Brown from one another. Will McBeth capture his 1st U.S. title, or will Schusterick claim his 3rd? Do McCray and Brown have what it takes to hoist the trophy for the first time? It'll all be decided Oct. 4 within the ropes of the Winthrop Gold course in Rock Hill, SC.

    I think the fact Will took it means more than Paul getting it. The emotion he showed in his speech. The struggle he had this year. And coming back on top. It makes the win that much better!

    This year has been some of the best and most dramatic disc golf I've ever seen. So happy for Will, and Marty, thanks for the great video/editing, and thanks for including that speech at the end. Fantastic.

    Amazing video Marty! Maybe the best I've seen! The recording of Paul's putt on 17 (11:12) seriously looks like a movie. It's larger than life, pretty much a perfect shot on his and your part. Also the anguish from Shusterick missing TWO putts and his redemption was nothing less than a storybook moment, and you captured it wonderfully. His speech was heartwarming and great for the sport, masterful editing there as well.
    I was really cheering on JohnE. It was tough what happened on 17, that hole makes and breaks dreams, but his birdie on 18 to get him in the playoff was just a spectacular, unexpected comeback. (Seriously, who didn't think he was out of it at that point? He showed us for real) All around an unforgettable moment for the sport, thanks to you for capturing it all, you're definitely the best video outlet for disc.

    I have watched a lot, if not every disc golf vid the web has to offer, many of which are majors with the winner interviews, plus I have seen many interviews, no knock Feldberg and Klimo but they joke and laugh at there own jokes, McBeth seems pretty nervous as a speaker, and Ricky talks so fast but Will's speech was spot on and super heart felt. Though I was pulling for McCray, Will's speech made his win even more epic to me! What a good speech!!! and Marty kill vid, way to edit the victory hugs over the speech audio!!!

    For me, this is as good as disc golf footage can get. This video is straight raw in terms of showing what pressure can do to an athlete. I don't care what you believe in (or don't), seeing JohnE invoke his god on 17 is one reason why this footage so much better than the one with commentary. And there really was nothing that commentary could add to watching Will S. miss those twin bunnies for the win. It speaks for itself. These guys are fallible humans playing for something that means everything professionally to them and that's compelling.

    Great video! After watching the 2020 USDGC, some friends and I were talking about this dramatic finish in 2014. I just went back and re-watched it and noticed something on the Will's final winning putt (19:18 into the video). Did he commit a stance violation per the PDGA rules? - "806.01 Putting Area: A. Any throw made from within 10 meters of the target, as measured from the rear of the marker disc to the base of the target, is a putt. B. After having released a putt, the player must demonstrate full control of balance behind the marker disc before advancing toward the target. A player who fails to do so has committed a stance violation and receives one penalty throw."

    • @Crypticwolf98
      @Crypticwolf98 Před 9 lety +1

      He could've also played less aggressively in the playoff. He was tied with them in the end. There's no need in running at the basket for a 250 ft Eagle.

    • @mercilpb
      @mercilpb Před 9 lety +1

      iStrife are you talking about his second shot? Thats pretty much the exact line everyone uses in that spot, just poorly executed. If you go under that branch you're fading down to the pin and probably looking at an inside the circle putt for birdie barring an unlucky roll. Paul had the same problem he did, but stayed inbounds. Will had a shorter and easier shot, but line is virtually the same, just easier to place because of more distance and perfect placement off the tee. If you were out there and spent any time watching on 18 you'd see every pro go for that exact second shot for the whole tournement. I don't know of anyone intentionally laying it out right, because then you would be either looking at one of the worst death putts on the planet earth or taking a crappy 30-60 foot layup for par. You want to fade down to the pin so you can putt even or below the pin, eliminating the death putt and reducing the odds of carding a stupid high score.
      I think his problem in the playoffs was poor shot execution, not poor shot selection.

    • @Crypticwolf98
      @Crypticwolf98 Před 9 lety

      Peter mercil No, I meant John E's drive off the pad. Sure he got that booming drive when he played it the first time, but sometimes you gotta play safer; especially when you're in a 3 way playoff against 2 great disc golfers.
      I do get what you're saying about the second shot though.

    First off.....congrats to Will, great win!! Secondly, I guess Paul McBeth is human after all, man did I see him miss a lot of putts that you normally think are automatic with him (must of been the blue putter's fault). And lastly, I am confused.....what is this talk of John E laying up??? What lay up? It's an island green.....right? Everything else is O.B. ....right? The only thing I can think of is to take your drive more towards the right of the green, which might have more room than trying to park the hole, I guess. Anyway, feel real bad for McCray......would have LOVED to have seen him win this.......

    • @jimboslice3646
      @jimboslice3646 Před 9 lety

      There is a lay up zone just off the tee pad. I'm not sure of the distance, but you can basically jump putt it off the tee just short of the red rope and the island shot becomes shorter and much easier from what I've seen. On touch shots like that even 60 to 80 feet would make a huge difference.

    • @jimboslice3646
      @jimboslice3646 Před 9 lety

      Jimbo Slice Looking at the video again it appear you have some room to the left allowing for a much wider hyzer shot into the green for the lay up.

    • @jeffthrow6892
      @jeffthrow6892 Před 9 lety

      Jimbo Slice --Okay, I see the red rope in front of the tee. I didn't see anyone actually throw the hole that way, though. I suppose with a 4 shot lead that would have been a wise decision. Thanks for clearing that up for me.....

    • @mercilpb
      @mercilpb Před 9 lety

      jeffthrow6892 I never saw any of the pros throw the layup, but the Performance flight guys were laying that shot up all week, especially when it was in the saturday pin placement (left, narrow side of green, other pin location its in the more open easier to hit right side of green).
      The layup spot is about 100 feet, turning the hole into a pretty simple upshot. The smart play in that spot for JohnE is to take the layup, then throw the anhyzer to the significantly more open right side of the green and look at a 30-40 ft putt for par, the bogie doesn't matter if you miss in his position. The same idea applies even after his first throw went OB.
      I think this is a case of not being able to modify your game based on situation, which is understandable to me. JohnE has been competing at a high level all year by playing really aggressively and going for everything. He also doesn't think or wait on the tee much, he just steps up and throws his shot immidiately. When you've done well with that approach all year long I'm sure its hard to step back and change your game, doing something outside of your usual strategy on the biggest stage you've ever played on.

    You can't blame McCray for going for the green. He was in the lead for a reason. It's just the way the cookie crumbles sometimes but he's a winner bc he plays with class. Unless your name is in the final 4 of major events I would slow my roll to calling him "prideful" and dumb for not laying up. Congrats to Will. He's had a so so year for him and it's a good win.
