- Inside the Luthier's Shop with BigDGuitars.com. Have this beautiful piece of east Indian rosewood that I need to use on a hollowbody. Love the look of oil on rosewood. For sale right now on www.bigdguitars.com
Dude I gotta say, Your videos are among the best as far as articulating every step of the process. And I love your results on the most part. The only part I have trouble with( Its not just you but most builders seem to do it) is conforming to the styles of Fender, Gibson or PRS. I'm in my 50s but only about 5 in as far building. But I don't see myself ever building an unoriginal piece.
With the level of craftsmanship and attention to detail you apply to your work, a couple of original designs could really build you a brand of your own. But then I'm coming an artist background.
Fantastic video. Great speed and info.
Great craftwork..great looking shop!
Really gorgeous work!
Outstanding job D
Great job as always :)
Big D energy? BIG D GUITARS ARE EASILY THE MOST INTIMIDATING IN THE LOCKER ROOM
Great video. Thanks
Love Your work and choice of woods, but I'd like to see this style with cream binding around that top, bet it woud really make it "pop".
Wonderful! Im going to be starting a build very similar soon! I have three questions lol
1. Would it be much more difficult to route for gretsch style humbuckers rather than the class tele setup?
2. Would it cause any problems to your knowledge if the semi-hollow chambers were routed out from the back and the cover piece wash actually on the back of the guitar???
3. Did you make all the templates yourself or did you purchase them?
Thanks man! Love your work and love your videos! So helpful!!!
Hello.
How thick is the finished body and which the internal thickness of the body back?
Hi Big D, I always wanted a double thickness (two blocks of wood) thin line guitar. Could you make a tele for me? Ed
I'ld love to see you make a super strat. (Not a big fan of teles to be honest.) But I love your work :)
beautiful. does teak oil get hard like true oil does?
Nice!!!! :)
Would you also recommend this method for a Jazz Bass Body?
My Jazz Bass is really heavy and I'm thinking to build my own lightweight bass. But there's not that much resources for a kind of hollow body bass on CZcams.
I want a double cut chambered thinline all made of maple with a mahogany center and maple cap top and bottom.
Ha noticed the cheap Chinese hand winding machine at the back of the video where you drill the jack hole. I used the same one to wind my pickups :)
hi, what kind of wood did you use on the center?????
Hey, BigD. You've probably been asked this many times before so I apologise if you have to repeat yourself. I'd like to know what your thoughts on tonewood are. Aside from weight, cost/availability and aesthetic, what reasons are there for choosing one type of wood over another? Thanks, Miles :)
Is the body limba?
Did you make the body template? If so, would you offer on your website? Cost?
Is that black Limba would you're using other than the Rosewood?
What's a good thickness for a hollow body top?
New website link?
Do you sell les paul custom style necks?
How thick is the wood for the body, and where are you able to find it (if you don't mind me asking)? I am looking at getting into making guitars on the side, and can't seem to find thicker sheets of wood without having to laminate.
+Fun & Eclectic you need to shop on ebay or from another distributor. look for 8/4 lumber.
Why not cut the F-hole while the top blank is still seperate from the body?
Nice!👍😎🎸🎶
Where did this one pop up? A few comments are new.
@@bigdguitars in the regular suggested videos. I'm glad...I must have missed it the first time!👍😎🎸🎶
I really like your channel, I am currently building a thin line and was wondering what were the drill sizes for the output jack ?
I always use 7/8
Thank you for the quick response. awesome channel
Hi, just wondering if you have a particular stockist that you purchase your wood through, I'm in Australia and have to buy direct from the USA if I want curly maple etc. I've heard you mention Gilmer Wood Company wondering if you have any more contacts. Love the videos by the way, great work... I have some highly figured Queensland Maple (very similar to Mahogany only prettier) in one piece blank size approx. 45mm thick if you want to swap for some drop tops just PM me
Cheers Carl Euroa Guitars
Nice vid, thx. Where did u get those long reach clamps?
woodworkers supply. they are a tad expensive. I think you can find them on ebay or alibaba for cheaper these days. I have had them for a while now.
I'm intrigued that you removed the bottom bit of the center and wondered if it affected the weight of the guitar significantly I was wondering if this caused any problems with balancing when the guitar is worn with a strap.
it did cause a little unbalancing issues
Thanks so much for replying really useful information as I want the lightest and most resonant body possible without causing balance problems, any advice on trying to get as loud and bass heavy sounding semi acoustic guitar as possible?
Um.... the strap lock screw might need little extra wood at the bottom
Why did you chisel out the two blocks and not just get them with the router
+Joseph Greef stability of the router. thats an odd spot to route out.
Limba body ?
I don't think you said, but it looks like a Ash body ....
hey to just let ya know bud your sites not working right, it goes to the directory & not a index.
trying to fix this... new website is messy. www.bigdguitars.com works but bigdguitars.com does not.
yeah wish I could help you more but Its been awhile since I did html stuff.
Seems like it's about building a hollow body tele. Interesting in a way, but putting a top on it doesn't really add much to the description. It's just you building a hollow body tele.
03:07 Resonating wood does nothing for an electric guitar. Vibrations in wood or air in no way have influance on a magnetic field. In fact, you don't want energy from the strings transferring to the guitarbody as this reduces the sustain. As long as the body and neck are sturdy this effect is minimal. In other words, tonewood is nothing but marketing and snakeoil. It often does look pretty though, the name should be changed to showwood.
Remko / most of the time showwood, and some sustainwood.

What a stupid idea! Rosewood is not for a chambered or hollow body guitar top! It will result in an inferior tone!
