Behind The Making Of Dune

- Denis Villeneuve’s highly anticipated ambitious adaptation of Frank Herbert’s Dune is finally here after years in the making and multiple delays. With a stellar A-list cast that includes the likes of Timothee Chalamet, Zendaya, Oscar Isaac, Jason Momoa, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Javier Bardem, and Dave Bautista, an extremely gifted filmmaker like Villeneuve who has brought us films like Arrival and Blade Runner 2049 and to an epic scope on the scale of franchises from the likes of Lord Of The Rings, there has been quite a lot of eyes on Dune. The story follows Paul Atriedes, the son of a noble family, who is entrusted with keeping one of the most vital elements in the galaxy safe. Dune was made on a massive budget which allowed the film’s creative team to really go the extra mile when bringing the planet Arrakis to life. From building actual detailed and layered sets that were meant to enhance the actors and actresses’ performances, filming in extremely high temperatures in the deserts of Dubai and Jordan, and shooting in the mountains of Budapest, the making of Dune is unlike many other blockbusters. Even elements that may seem minor such as the carvings of the sandworms on the wall and the sand the characters walk on, was all made carefully and with a clear vision. It wasn’t all smooth sailing making Dune, as the crew did encounter problems along the way such as lighting windowless locations or having to edit during lockdown where the main editor and the director couldn’t sit in the main room. Even with those hurdles, there is a lot of promise within Dune.

It’s so refreshing to not see that much cgi! I love practical effects🙌
They will always look better because they’re real.
Yes 🥰
People have no idea the amount of CG that is in movie and you never notice. I wish movies will go full practical just so people see how stupid this type of comment is.
lol its so much cgi in the movie
🎼🎶🎵🔊🔊🔊🔊📽🎵🎶🎼
Still cannot get this movie out of my head. Will sure have to watch it again.
agreed i've already seen it twice tempted to go see it a third time
Errrr about that. The whole film was a trailer for a second one. Nothing happened
@@sr8877 Could not agree more. Beside they killed off all the good actors except Rebecca Ferguson in the first hour and a half

He so hot
I can't believe Christian bale gained 20000 pounds to play the sand worm. Such a dedicated actor
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I think I've seen this cut and paste comment on other Dune vids
More like 2 billion pounds
@@Valarmorgolis You ain't wrong mate
I heard it was Andy Serkis who played the sand worm.
The sheer amount of care, love, and effort put into this film by everyone involved is palpable, and the attention to detail is mind blowing. Watching it on the big screen was literally amazing
i watched it on 77" OLED with dolby atmos and it was truly amazing.
Where did y'all watched it ??
It's nowhere in my country....!!!!
I watched it in Germany IMAX 3D and it literally was the most immersive Cinema experience of my whole Life (I am 40). I thought: OK, If this is Cinema, what were they doing before this?
But the fighting scene is boring and suck.
@@05milkajeng they werent but these arent going to be action movies
Zendaya is in 90% of the trailer, and less than 2% of the movie
She’ll be 💯 in part 2.
That's 2% too much.
She is the narrator at the beginning of the movie bruh! like what is wrong with people..... Paul sees visions of her throught the whole movie and she is integral to the last fight scene which is like an initiation into the Freman and his "acceptance" as the Kwisatz Haderach.
She’s not really a great actor to be crying about that 😂
Thank goodness 🤣🤣
not to be dramatic but this film was absolutely perfect and satisfying
Yes
Yeah dramatic!
it was so beautifully shot, all the wide angle desert scenes had my jaw dropped, so bummed couldn't watch it in the theatre
true!
Didn’t knew about the old Dune movie, didn’t watch the trailer, but man!!!!!!! This was one the best visual experience movies ever!!!
I really thought way more of it was CGI, but I was shocked at how I couldn't make out what was and wasn't real. Turns out it was pretty much all real. Very impressed.
The make-up department too did a great job. The baron for example, could have never tell that he had all this latex and makeup going on. It looked so natural and realistic.
I am living in Hungary and I was work in the movie set of the film during 2 summer.
When I first step into the hangar where the set of the Arrakis palace was made I instantly felt like I'm somewhere in the dessert even without the illuminance and special lights. It was enormous. It was breathtaking.
It's a wonderful feeling when you can see the result of your work in the cinema, in such a big project like this.
I am grateful that I was able to take part in the making of this wonderful production.
I was so happy to see so many Hungarian names in the credits. Watched it twice already (dubbed and with subs) but thinking of going again. It gave me the same awe and chills that the original Star Wars trilogy gave me when I was a kid. This is the type of movie I go to the cinema for. Thank you for your hard work on this masterpiece, too and hope you can work on the next part as well. :) Cheers from Budapest :)
What a story can you give me your twitter or somthing to talk with you about this Amazing experiance
And we are super grateful for your incredible work cause it was definitely amazing
This film is 100% going to win the Oscars for Best Visual Effects and Best Production Design
Cinematography 100% as well
It won't, the oscars aren't kind to sci-fi and fantasy. It should win several awards, but it probably won't be nominated
Don't forget sound design! The score is INSANE.
@@gregorybarnette1471 the score and sound design are different.... even though they both work together in building the narrative, the score is composed by hans zimmer and the sound design is done by mark mangini and team..
you're right hahaha
I can see Dune winning an Oscar or at least being selected for an Oscar.
The Mad Max: Fury Road of 2021. So it will dominate the technical categories for sure
it didnt get as high of a score on rotten tomatoes as u would think
no the new matrix movie will that shit is gonna go crazy when it comes out
who cares about the oscars these days lol
Definitely not 😂😂😂
This video needs more views, more praise. Every aspect of this film was perfect. At no point was my immersion broken. I didn’t question if any of the shots were cgi at all. The cinematography is unmatched. The only bummer is waiting for the part 2
Seriously, when the title screen said part one I almost slapped myself in the face. (I do not watch part ones in theatres If I don't know the storyline). When it cut at the end, I was so disappointed like dang it's been 2 hours already? I was so into this movie.
Where can I watch it? Is it in cinemas??
@@sylvialol1352 yes depends where you live.
@@sylvialol1352 it’s also on HBO max if you have that
The CGI was the best I’ve ever seen
I wasn’t ready for how intense the scenes between Paul and Jessica, when they were on the run, would be. And the fight with Jamis was extremely well done, given how important it was in the story. That shot of Chani, (who just minutes earlier told Paul he would die quickly and with honor for holding her uncles Crysknife) looking at Paul so much awe and respect after he defeated one of their best warriors, nearly brought tears to my eyes.
Here’s a weird thing: in the late 1970s, Ridley Scott was prepping a possible DUNE after Jodorowsky’s version fell through. He wanted an INCESTUOUS RELATIONSHIP to happen between Jessica and Paul, so Alia was a result of that. As you can imagine, Frank Herbert was not happy with this particular interpretation.
@@jonathanmelia Yeah, he took too much LSD. The storyboards looked good, but what few costumes he made were laughable. i can only imagine how dreadful the special effects would have been.
@@jonathanmelia There was an awkward fleeting moment between Paul and Jessica when they were changing into their stilsuits after they crashed the ornithopter. Kinda caught me off guard when Jessica gave Paul a once over look.
@@weirdshibainu I think it was less incestuous and more of the idea of a mother worried about her son and looking at him like “wow my son has had to grow up so fast, he’s still a skinny little 15yr old”. I mean, everything was so foreign to them on the new planet after losing everything and they’re now having to fight to survive and stay hidden. I think the clip of Paul’s back was to maybe show vulnerability and that “naked” or exposed feeling. I think it ties well to the theme of the story for Paul and Lady Jessica on the run! It was also a cool clip too! I think at first glance, it might have seemed strange to add it in and I understand where you’re coming from.
My favorite scene between them is when he used the voice against his mother, "Get off Me, You Bene Geserit made me a freak". A second later she held him, as he cried that his father was dead.
"So, Denis, how many panoramic shots do you want in this movie?"
"Yes"
His movies always have panoramic shots. Idk which had more, this or bladerunner
@@kevinc.cucumber3697 Blade Runner I can enjoy the shots, because the cyberpunk-ish and post-apocalyptic environment is unique and interesting. Dune is just desserts. Beautiful sometimes, but it can be a bit too slow and boring.
@@jostimantatarigan7657 Finally someone willing to say the truth about this movie. Slow and boring. And why cast Oscar Isaac in this movie while your at it.
I can watch Dune and Interstellar on the same day and can repeat them both the next day, that's how amazing both films are.
Same!
My 2 favorite films now!
If it wasn't for Skarsgard and the worm, I wouldn't watch this movie
I would add The King to the list
Timothee chalamet acted on both movies
Those thopters are so epic. Like Dragonflies 💯💯💯💯
i thought you wrote thot-ers lol
I know right they are sooooo awesome
You can buy R/c thopters and fly one yourself. Be cool if they build a r/c one because of this movie. Wings would have to be wider to move more air in reality though.
I read so many comments complaining about the movie that when I finally got to watch it I wasn't as excited anymore, but while I was watching it I was like???? what were they talking about?? I LOVED it!! It was amazing!!
I haven’t been so impressed and emotionally moved by a movie like Dune in such a long time
Thats why the film is such a success because everyone that worked on it understood the assignment! I havent read the books or was remotely aware of this universe but the way the storytelling unfolded was as if i knew the whole story all along. PLUS the way that they picked the right cast for this movie! And the direction and the music! *CHEF’S KISS*
My dad was a huge fan of the books and hyped for this movie. Im a fan of Denis so i was hyped too, but for a different reason. Now im reading the books and invested on the universe
As a long time fan of Herbert's books, I'm truly grateful for how easily this movie managed to immerse new audiences into the intricate universe of Dune. That accomplishment alone is enough to convince me Villeneuve is a genius at work.
' everyone that worked on it understood the assignment!'.... sounds interesting but how is this different from most movies???
During the spice harvester and the worm scene, the radio communication between Carryalls and the controller, they kept saying “over”… which in real life, only use in amateur radio communication for leisure and not use in the professional air traffic control situation at all. The Carryall also kept transmitting useless info like “initiating docking sequence” and then literally 2 seconds later “docking sequence initiated”… 🤦🏻♂️ Obviously whoever did the dialogue for that scene does not understood the fundamentals of professional radio communication.
There are a lot of other things wrong in this movie as well. Another example is whoever design the military uniform does not seems to understand the importance of rankings and the chain of command in military as the uniform does not appears to have any kind of military ranks whatsoever on them at all…
This movie is basically shit cover in gold. It just looks absolutely stunning but you really have to turn your brain off to actually enjoy it.
You know a movie is good when you have watched it twice, and still want to watch it again!
I watched dune yesterday and it's so cool to see the backstage!
Everybody in each department for this film needs serious raise. I haven't seen film so technically chef kiss for a while.
The movie’s big-screen-worthy visuals are indeed the main focus of Dune(2021). Cast and crew hyping up the hard work that went into making the film while enthusing about director Villeneuve’s commitment to crafting real sets and using practical effects as much as possible.
I feel like I'm in good hands with Villeneuve. Clearly he knows how to hire the best crew necessary to make these films a success.
I was surprised on how much I loved this movie, you can tell there was so much work behind it, a clear vision and everything. Its stunning too look at and just amazing work in general. I cant wait for the next one.
I thought the ornithopters at least were CGI, can’t believe how much practical stuff is built in this
They are CGI in most shots.
I love that they didn't use a bunch of cgi. Just straight practical effects made it so believable. I can't wait to watch it for the 3rd time!
I’m devouring every single snippet of CZcams content on the movie. Apparently pronouncing Dennis Villeneuve is a bit of a challenge
Oh really? Is there more than one way people pronounce it ?
@@TheThings Considering (meaning no offence) that it was pronounced wrong in this video, I would say yes, definitely yes. He and I are from the same province, and his name can't be properly pronounced in English because is has sounds that are specifically of the Quebec accent (Specifically the "eu" sound does not exist in English, but also we pronounce all our vowels differently from European French).
That said, Quebecers are already aware that our language is hard to pronounce, so I don't think anyone is offended by his name being mispronounced, as long as you're doing your best. :P
@@unerochebleue Is this the correct? czcams.com/video/hU5x8IiGLvQ/video.html
@@Taxon54 yes that is correct, especially when he pronounces it at the end of the video, the first e (ville
@@Taxon54 It's pronounced in a more international French in this, but yes, it is a correct French pronunciation. If I had to nitpick (and I mean nitpick), I would say the "i"s are closer to the French i than the Quebec i, and also as someone else said, the way he says it at the end would be more correct. You would never say it as VillEneuvE. It would flow more like Vilneuv.
My point being, it's not an easy name to pronounce in English and as long as people try their best, I don't think it's offensive. I'd rather see someone do their best and get it slightly wrong, than someone giving up and just pronouncing it like he's an English speaker. The person narrating this video did a good enough job as it is.
Timothée is one of a generational actor, class
They didn't shoot the JAWS IN the swimming pool is savage AF
Dune was amazing. I really hope he gets a chance to make part two
It’s been green lit for part 2. And he has plans to make a 3rd.
They should have done them all at once like LOTR.
@@pineapplepizza4016 Peter Jackson would have done a better job
Going more practical was a great decision. We see how many films stand the test of time when they use practical effects and it seems like you can touch and smell things. Rather than CGI which dates itself, especially when done cheaply.
Have you seen the practical sand worms in the 1st Dune adaptation? they looked fake even in the 80´s.
@@pabloiranzo3371 Yes
Where did you get the idea that they went 'more practical'. More practical compared to what? There are no breakdowns in this 'making off' so how do you know what is practical vs CGI?
As much as the effects were great, the sound was the winner for me. The music and sound effects were amazing.
3:56 Jason Momoa just standing there in full Duncan Idaho costume with his *bass guitar*
the set was wild
Lol
wow the amount of practical effects used by Denis is insane imagine how much more he can bring Dune to life in the second movie and with a bigger budget! cant wait!
I just finished watching this film and thought it was incredibly well done.
Zendaya is in dune less than 6 minutes but they use her image to promote
It happened in Spider-Man homecoming too

This movie deserves an Academy Award for best picture.
Or Belfast. Dune is my 2nd choice
The beginning of the movie were scenes were filmed in Norway was ignored in this video. I wanted to hear a little about those locations too.
every frame of this movie is so beautiful. reminds me of the Fall.
Love, love, love! This Dune version. Everything about it is perfect
Thank the Mahdi that Peter Berg did not get his hands on Dune. He's one of the worst directors out and loves bloated CG. Denis killed it on Dune. I've seen it 5 times in 5 days. Pinnacle of what scifi story telling can be. It will go down with the Blade Runners and 2001s in scifi history.
Peter Berg is basically a discount Michael Bay
It’s the fact that I’ve watched this movie more times in the span of less than 2 weeks than I’ve watched any of the new Star Wars movies combined.
Just watched it and it’s was awe-inspiring! The real sets clearly made the film genuine. I saw the 1984 version and was looking forward to this update. Awesome and true to the books. Can’t wait for more!
It's always awesome to see these practical effects in film!! I feel like it makes a difference to the overall quality
I want the Dune series from Denis Villeneuve. 2.5 hours is so little for such beauty.
There are so many vfx shots in this trailer. Literally every shot of the Thopter from the film that you showed was full cg.
Had to look for the series on a box i had in my storage room for many years now. Looks like its time to read it all over again.
Nothing sucks worse than having to wait for part 2!!!
I love how they incorporated more of real life settings than CGI, which reminds me of Lord of the Rings.
"They didn't shoot 'Jaws' in a swimming pool." 😂
The effects, cinematography, acting, were all superb in the movie. Villeneuve really bought the desert world to life, especially filming at incredible locales and landscapes.
love how jason is randomly playing a bass at 3:56 haha
There was a whole miniseries of dune that was done in early 2000’s that did not even get an honorable mention - so sad cause it was great
With James mcavoy? I tried to watch it not long ago, couldn’t get into it
@@jonathanstafford750 it was a really great adaptation! I have always felt that the dune book should be a series and they did a good job of following the book in that particular mini-series.
I watched Dune again this time in IMAX and was a cultural experience. Also the man next to me who told me how him and his wife were huge Dune fans only for the wife to sadly pass away before getting a chance to see the movie and watching this man who was full blown sobbing during scenes....the movie because of how moved he was. Movies move us to the core. Dune did that....I want to thank you all!
She is better off not seeing this abomination of horrible acting and making it woke.
For part 2 they'll travel to Arrakis for realism.
Does it look like New Mexico?
Piece of art.. The cast, especially Timothee Chalamet was great! Also, the CGI - mad respect!
We really need part 2. Now I am invested in the movie after seeing part 1
I noticed in the movie that their "desert boots" just look like Sketchers or something. Made me chuckle. "Yeah, we get these boots at JC Penny."

No wonder the visual is so good !.
This is why the fighting was so familiar to Arnis combat. Its Filipino
Love the representation!
I was pretty saying “is it just me, or does they looked like they got that Arnis fighting moves?” when I watched it & guess it was indeed taken from arnis 😌
The Matrix fight scenes were dumb in this movie. SORRY FOLKS!!!
"It's BudaPESHT!" - Natasha Romanoff
Yes, it is 'Pesht' and Hungarian s is sh sound, we have sz for the English s sound
VERY damn nice...SAW it in IMAX on Friday & loved it
I'm certain the practical effects is big part of why this movie felt so real and lived in. It's absolute masterpiece of world building on a level we rarely see in movie sci-fi and fantasy adaptation.
I think this could be the next big series up after game of thrones if done right!
Yes!! my friends were just talking about this. I think HBO should pick it up and definitely shot by GOT directors
True talent I'm in awe
Amazing movie. Looking forward to part 2, and 3, and 4, and so on!
From a cinematic standpoint it was breathtakingly beautiful. My only real complaint is that it felt incredibly long and story wise it felt like there was no climax. But maybe i was just too confused the whole time because i didnt know much about it
This film's so great I wouldn't be surprised if some cinema lovers choose Dune as the best film of 2021 or even best film of the decade.
Even with how advanced cgi is now it was so clear this didn’t use as much, made it so much more entrancing
So much efforts goes into a movie hatsoff❤️
I was Dune two times already and I'll definitely see it for more than once again. It's amazing in every aspect

The "rum" in "Wadi Rum" is actually pronounced as "room".
Dennis Villanueve and Hans Zimmer is a master combination .. of course the othet too costume etc etc .. cast also great
I think Frank Herbert would be very proud of, not only the movie, but the love and respect that went into the making of it.
0:22 Most of the movie's budget went to NASA and ESA to build a proper 2 billion ton jumpship and put it into orbit, even though it's visible for less than a minute in the movie. Such dedication.

Amazing great cast, great director!
Just FYI, this film was not shot with IMAX cameras. It was shot digitally on Arri Alexa IMAX certified cameras. Those expanded IMAX sequences were framed in 1.43:1 aspect ratio.
What does that mean
@@jackz7749 The people that made this video said that certain scenes in Dune was shot with IMAX cameras. That's not true, the whole film was shot on Arri digital cameras that were approved by IMAX.
