I love how Garak starts of with a positive note about returning home. Then spins into despair. Before bouncing back to optimism if only to comfort Julian... I miss Garak.

I always wondered if Garak was thinking of suicide in this conversation. The hope of returning home was a large part of what had kept him alive all those years. Mila, whom Garak regarded as if she were his mother (which at least in apocrypha she actually was) was dead and their home had been destroyed. Garak had to go back to Cardassia, but there was nothing there for him. His friendship with Bashir (and even Odo, to a degree) were tainted by his situation, and his might-have-been love Tora Ziyal was dead.
