A joke that I heard years ago in high school:
“An airliner made a hard landing. As an old lady was disembarking at the gate, she asked the captain, ‘Sonny, can I ask you a question?’
    The captain replied, ‘Absolutely, ma’am!’
She asked, ‘Did we land or were we shot down?’”

One time on a South West flight, we hit the runway so hard, everybody gasped or yelped. Then the flight attendant who already looked rattled said, "Welcome to Seattle..." When someone reminded her that we were in fact in Tacoma, she replied, "Sorry, I'm still recovering from the landing!" I used to be aircrew in the Air Force flying on what is essentially a militarized Boeing 707. I'd bet my next paycheck the pilot damaged the landing gear with that landing.

I wouldnt worry if I used it, only ever flew with them twice. Uk newcastle to tenerife, new plane less than year old, must be last NG bought as they never took delivery of the Max yet. Was an amazing flight and landing. The return was perfect except for landing, felt like plane fell out the sky and hit runway sideways, swerving side to side down runway. But that must be windsheer and pilots did very well to land it. I'd certainly still use them.

I flew from east coast to midwest in Oct 2017 as planes were trying to get out of east coast before airports were canceling flights due to bad storm. So many people threw up on plane from turbulence and one special needs adult had an accident that the pilot apologized for the odor due to the recirculating air or something like that. I never loved flying but after that flight it turned to an active dislike!

Last time I flew, the pilot did such a smooth landing I couldn't even feel it. That was a 10/10 perfect landing in my opinion. So I went to the cockpit and congratulated him. He seemed surprised and he was really nice and humbled. To him it was probably just another day at the office. To me, it was a perfect landing, and you can't take that for granted. Especially when you're flying Economy LOL.
This was the second perfect landing in probably 30 times flying. So definitely not that common, although I know this is not always possible, due to weather and runway conditions, but I'm sure most of the pilots are always doing their best to do a smooth landing.
I know his ego must've jumped like 30 feet in the air, but it was a buttery smooth landing and even though, somewhere inside, I'm sure he probably knew it, I thought it was nice for him to know that some of the passengers noticed it, too, and definitely appreciated it. :)

I was sitting in 1C, and the coffee flight service was just starting when we hit a bump - the flight attendant left the floor, the coffee went over the guy on the other side of the aisle, I got her in my lap - she turned to me and said "I think you got the best part of that deal Sir"....

But not just because they are there to ensure your safety, even if they were 'just' waitresses ... just treat people with respect unless they have done you wrong. Paying someone for a service doesn't make one superior. (Here i don't meant You, but you as people in general)

The history of flight attendants is that they used to be flying nurses, not sure how much of that is still true. There is definitely some medical training involved as well as emergency training.
But being respectful to other people goes without saying, until they prove they do not deserve it by the way _they_ behave and disrespect people, and even then it is often just as stupid to start attacking people over not having a face mask on.

Genevieve Campbell I had the flip side on this. I was taking a tiny regional jet and was told the bins were full and my carry-on wouldn’t fit under the seat. Since I took the exact same plane on the way out, I knew the bag would fit. I had to waste almost a full minute arguing before the attendant did the whole, “okay, give it a shot” with a barely contained eye roll. Sure enough, my bag slipped in under the seat like it was designed to exactly fill the space. I had made sure to do my research on the plane before the trip and knew the under seat measurements.

This is so true, Kelsey, regarding landings. I still remember my smoothest landing ever after more than 20 years. Cleared on a straight-in to RWY33 at KDPA in a PA-28, I had to crab it in to account for a slight cross-wind (I hadn't acquired the hang of dipping the windward wing yet). After correcting alignment at the last second, I set her down so gently it was one of those butter landings we all want to give passengers.

4:52 reminds me of a time when I was on a SouthWest flight and the weather systems went down so there were no open gates and like 4 planes ahead of us, so the pilot parked us on the tarmac in between two active runways! One guy got up, stretched, looked one flight attendant in the eyes, and then walked straight back while she was telling him to please sit down and put on his seat belt, which he should have been doing with the illuminated sign. Well, the pilot said, "There's a gate open, and we can taxi there now, so I need everyone in their seats with their seat belts on." The flight attendants are yelling towards the back to sit down and buckle up, and nothing happens, so they tell the pilot to go. I was sitting in the back, and the guy was still in the bathroom, and all we hear after we start moving is a thunk and a yelp. Everyone on the plane is just laughing super hard, and we park at the gate. The guy gets out, grabs his stuff, and leaves. Literally first guy off the plane. Lol

@@74gear I'm absolutely unqualified for your job. And it's not just losing the staring contest as evidence of that :-) it's not an easy job! Though I've been around aircraft since a kid. I helped out at a museum, working on a B17 and by pushing a broom or hanging on the end of a wrench attached to a radial engine head jug bolt, helping out with a rebuild of a mark 1 spitfire by fetching tools or bucking rivets or getting beers. I've never actually had control of an airplane other than an Aeronca super chief from the 40s. Someday to take care of that for real but no big multiengine jets in my future except as a passenger!

It's very true about taking care of the flight attendants, they'll take care of you. Years ago, I was flying from SFO to IAD after doing some IT upgrades for UAL. A hurricane was about to hit the east coast so they were cancelling flights back home. I got on the last plane back to IAD. Before going to the gate, I bought a dozen cookies from the McDonald's and then sat at the gate near the flight attendants. I offered them a cookie and a few took me up on the offer. I then went to the gate agent to see if I could get an economy plus seat since I was tall and I was in the last row of the plane. I offered her a cookie as well, which she gladly took and I got upgraded to row 10! When I got on the plane, someone had taken my seat because they wanted to sit with their family, and they said they were in row 7, so I took that seat. Then the first class attendant came up and said, come with me, and I wound up in 3A first class! That was the best flight I ever had. I started out at the back of the plane and then ended up in first class, best $5 worth of cookies I've ever spent!

Real happy I found your channel. The way you craft your videos are such a joy to watch on top of the interesting, rich and valuable content. I love the funny stuff you include. The fact that you are obviously a decent guy with values makes your videos just perfect. You use the right amount of music and its volume levels, your voice is very pleasant to listen to (something I`m kinda sensitive about, don`t get me wrong I don`t mean the voice people are born with but the way someone talks) and yes, I saw the videos people refer to how you look (makes me cringe to even mention it) and all I can say is those people are sooo beyond......just beyond.....(I find no words for it because beauty is just so much there and everywhere and some people are in the sad position not being able to see it and I don`t mean it in an offensive way but in a compassionate way). Your videos are of high value and I appreciate the work you put into it. Just so you know, there are times when I`m not feeling so well emotionally, so also then your videos help to overcome those moments besides watching and following your channel generally. I wish you all the best and hope your channel grows according to its worthiness. I remember a joke from somewhere back when I was a kid. A flight from a forerunner of British Airways, probably BEA, back in the 50's landed at a German airport whose ground controllers had a reputation for being somewhat impatient. The bird turns off the runway and contacts ground, gets the taxi instructions in to the gate and just sits there for a minute while the crew are checking the taxiway map, only for a snarky Aircraft blah blah blah. Why are you not moving? Don't you know where you are going? HAVE YOU NOT BEEN HERE BEFORE? from the ground controller. A lot of former RAF bomber crew found new employment post WWII in the airlines. The reply from the aircraft captain was a short. Indeed I have old boy, however it was 1944 and I didn't stop.

He made a terribly hard landing one day, so hard that we had to get the gear inspected before the next flight. The lead FA began her "welcome to" message by saying, "On behalf of Captain Crunch and the entire team..." I came out of the cockpit first. The FA pointed at me and mouthed the words, "Not him." When the captain emerged, the entire cabin broke out in laughs, jeers, and rude noises. Thank God it was the last leg of the day.

Your mentioning smooth landings reminds me of the only time I've ever been on a commercial plane. It was back in March 1998. I was living in Bowling Green, OH and had a job interview in Atlanta with Norfolk Southern. They flew me down from Toledo and then back the next day after the interviews. Anyways, both ways, I was on a Delta 727 back in coach. Between Toledo and Atlanta, we had an intermediate stop in Fort Wayne.
So, going down, we start backing out from the terminal in Toledo, and the flight attendants start in with the safety lecture. George Carlin was right on with how the lecture goes, which helped to calm my nerves somewhat. However, I looked out over the left wing as we were taxiing and didn't realize until then how much a wing flexes. We took off, and since it was a short trip to Fort Wayne, we didn't get above the clouds. I looked out on the wing, and the scene from "Twilight Zone: The Movie" started going through my head, which didn't help my nerves. So, we started coming down to Fort Wayne, and I was looking out and saw the edge of the runway out the window, and it seemed to stop coming up. I started thinking "That was a really smooth landing." Suddenly, there was a loud WHAM! that shook the plane. The first thing that went through my mind was "belly landing", and I immediately braced myself for what I thought was going to be a crash. Then I felt the plane slowing and realized that it was the tires hitting that caused the jolt. I know that when watching planes land on TV or movies, I'd seen the tire smoke when the plane touches down, but it looks so much smoother than when on the plane itself.
Thankfully, knowing what to expect after that first part of the trip, the rest of the flight and my return flight went smoothly. Between Fort Wayne and Atlanta, we got up above the clouds, and that was a beautiful sight.
