I slacked off of school for a long time and have actually never written an essay. i’ve recently decided I’m done being lazy and I’m trying to get my education. don’t feel bad for watching this video it doesn’t mean you’re dumb. @@stephespi8373 It’s going well thank you. The level of concentration required was arresting at first, but I’ve made it through my first full year of higher education in my later 30s. Lol. I’ve actually yet to be required to write an essay, but have managed to hang in there with kids half my age, and have carried close to a 3.8 so far. Wish I would’ve just showed up and never gave up when I was younger.

- The Goal of an academic essay:
• Persuade readers of a position or perspective
• Informed arguments with evidence and analysis
- Preparation
• Write Initial Thesis (The main idea of the essay)
• Outline the essay structure (makes the essay easier to write)
- Introduction:
• Hook
• Context (background information, overview of academic work and difficult terms)
• Thesis statement (Central argument, 1 to 2 sentences long)
• Overview of the essay (This essay begins by..., it then explores...., Subsequently...)
- Writing (body) (60% of the essay):
• Split the body to 3 paragraphs (Idea 1, 2, 3)
• Start every paragraph with topic sentences (transition from previous paragraph + introduce arguments in this paragraph)
• Present reader with data, examples and quotes
• Interpret and explain the evidence and show how it helps to develop the overall argument
• Make arguments that support your thesis
• Provide evidence
• Develop your ideas
- Writing (conclusion)
• Summarize and tie your points together
• Show the outcome of your arguments
• Emphasize why your argument matters
- Revision
• Double check arguments, grammar, spelling and formatting
• Use a plagiarism checker for your writing

P= Point
E = Evidence
E = Evaluation
L = Link

@@stephespi8373 The PEEL method is how you structure every paragraph in the essay, so yes you would use evaluation and link in your conclusion but you should also use them in your previous paragraphs in order for your structure to be consistent. If you’re struggling with applying them elsewhere here’s just a reminder of what they mean:
• Evaluation is providing an opinion about whether the question/statement is true and whether you agree with it.
• Link is linking back to the question/statement.
I hope this helps and I hope I’ve explained it clear enough because I’ve been quite sleep deprived recently, so I apologise if I’m rambling a bit!😭💕

Days pass and the essay writing contest has begun, in my mind I didn’t want to win so I didn’t try to make it good BUT I still made it to the stupid finals. I know I have to do this but every time I sit down to write I just can’t, I start but quickly make an excuse to do something or check my phone real quick, then I just end up never getting it done. Does anyone have a way to help me focus and just do it? I just get so easily distracted
This video talks about the intro,thesis sentence and body section. In the intro we need to use hook to grab the readers intrest then a context to elaborate the hook and lastely some background information about the topic. Then comes the thesis statment which includes the central argument which should be 1-2 sentences long. To end it use a subsequent which is wide ranging effect in the world. In body section make arguments supporting your thesis,provide evidence and to devolop ideas. Then begin your para with a topic sentence. In last para, there should be conclusion to summarize and tie together your points, show outcome of arguments and emphasize why your arguments matter.

I have to watch this coz I was going to have an essay writing contest even though I don't how to do it.
I kept getting B papers and I talked to one professor about it. I found out that college-level writing doesn't use topic sentences anymore. Apparently to some professors it restricts what can be said in a paragraph. Once I omitted them, I started getting A's. Go figure.
