    This video has done nothing to quench my thirst for the new Snoopy. The want is now even stronger. Great video!

  • @glacieractivity
    @glacieractivity Před 3 lety +9

    I must be a masochist. I was offered the Snoopy one when I came out at a very good price because I instantly knew the history of Snoopy and Nasa and Apollo 13 when I saw it. I even knew something few watch reviewers mention about why the Snoopy award was named after Snoopy.
    Astronauts have forever worn a textile hat/cap inside their helmets called the "Communications Carrier Assembly" - and it looks a lot like the leather helmet WW2 pilots (and Snoopy) was wearing. So the astronauts named their CCA the "Snoopy cap".
    Anyways, here I am. Like in 2003 - except without a really good deal. Horologically, I think the Snoopy watch may be the most significant of them all. Sure, it is cool that Armstrong left his watch in the capsule to cater to a faulty instrument in the lander.
    But in terms of the value of time - Apollo 13 is a bigger deal, as the trio sitting in a capsule where all the electronics were blown out or shut off to save electricity - they timed the mid-course correction burns with the manual wind mechanical Speedmaster. As far as I know - it is the only time in history that a rocket engine has been time-controlled in space by a pure mechanical timer.
    The Apollo 13-crew were returned to sailors. The NASA astronomers on Earth developed star-maps for them to navigate by (they had no internal referencing). So there they were - in a ship with the stars and a timer and a sextant
    As such it also explains the post-quartz question "why a mechanical timer"?. It even explains the whole "flight-qualified" message on the back of the Professional. Implying that when all the electronics short-cut or has no battery left - one can still measure a second, a minute, and hour and a day to pretty good precision.
    Finally. Girls do not much care about watch guys (with good reasons - hacking seconds and flybacks and perpetual calendars are interesting - but also incredibly nerdy). To strap a Snoopy to the wrist is similar to actually wearing Baby Yoda/Grogu on the wrist. One can talk about the human drama of Apollo 13/those who never landed on the moon but did come home. The value of time. The meaning of life.
    And with this latest incarnation, one can flick it around - and demonstrate a sense of humour and showing that one does not take oneself too seriously. I think Snoopy 2020 is under-priced. A lot. This thing can lead to marriage with the most amazing human being one has ever met or will meet. It can lead to a friendship with someone - just from the conversation. Nobody will hate you for rocking a "be aware - I have more money than you so I must skip in front of you in the cash-line" Rolex-vibe.
    Omega has done this so well - to the point that they are shy about silver being used in the dial that the fact is almost invisibly engraved. And allowing us to excuse ourselves for the extravagance, by saying it is a homage to the Silver in the Snoopy pin.
    If my grandmother was still alive, I am pretty sure I could explain to her why one can spend an awful amount of money on a watch in the time of mobile phones buzzing us every 10 seconds from a new mail/message.
    And interestingly - in a world where mechanical watches are silly overpriced and Omega are doing special editions of the Speedy more frequent than I change underwear - this one is not overpriced. This one is not a limited edition. it does not even feel speculative.
    It is like having Baby Yoda strapped to the wrist. So cute. So shy about using the force except when needed. Not taking itself too seriously - being happy to play with a small orb. I started school with a fantasy to become an astronaut - I ended up with a Dr Scient degree in Earth-science walking around on this planet in space. I would hate if someone thought I was a wanna-be astronaut just from liking the Speedy. (PS, I am a wannabe astronaut of course)
    I kind of expect Omega to mail me the new snoopy after this rant of love. :-)

      I just wanted to commend you for your insightful & well stated view, very impressive indeed,
      I was 8 years old during the Apollo 13 mission & we watched it from the very start. I remember to this day everyone jumping up & down, crying with joy when we heard them. Every time I watch the movie, I tear up as it takes me right back to that day.
      As a interesting side note to your thought on the quartz watch. I became a US Army Green Beret in 1984 & when I got to my first unit our C/O's rule was mechanical watches were mandatory. He just happened to be a Vietnam veteran with a lot of combat experience that's missions required reliable & accurate timing, so much for quartz.
      In the end, I think Omega should send you a Silver Snoopy, you earned it my friend.

    Very interesting overview, great reference video just one remark;
    It was Thomas “Ken” Mattingly who was exposed to measles and was replaced in the original Apollo 13 crew.
    However, Charlie Duke was part of the Apollo 13 backup crew as LMP - Lunar Module Pilot, a position he later flew during Apollo 16 …
    Although the “Eyes on the Stars” might refer to President Roosevelt’s speech, during the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo era, it literally referred to the astronauts’ training in celestial navigation.
    NASA astronauts learned to find their way using the Moon and the position of 57 stars. Courses were given at the Morehead Planetarium University of North Carolina. #MoonwatchUniverse

    Its not limited edition, a year later and you will still be able to place an order for one.
    2015 had a limited run of 1970 and hence the current value.
    2003 had a limited run of 5441 and is trading at around $12k.
    I believe the 2020 will hold its value or have limited down side.

      Hi, unfortunately we don’t have a crystal ball. We suspect that as soon as this watch will be taken out of production, value will go up. Based on previous Speedmaster Moonwatch LEs, it is safe to say that at some point they will all surpass the retail price at least.

      @@macrolex9485 I don’t think so - Charles Duke is an astronaut of the Apollo programme, would have been scheduled for Apollo XIII but couldn’t go because of the measles. He is also the reason why Ken Mattingly couldn’t go (out of fear he’d get the measles while in space) and if you know anything about Apollo XIII, you also know Mattingly‘s role in the rescue of Apollo XIII. Since it’s a Snoopy Award commemorative edition, it’s nice to have the autograph of Charles Duke scratched into it. There are literally hundreds of this watch, but only one Charles Duke and probably only one with the autograph of him scratched into the watch. So, to me, it’s not a damage to the watch but, in contrary, a nice addition with a personal story of meeting the actual astronaut.
