I hope it doesn't sound cheesy but watching your review is kind of pure joy to me. I love the way you keep the same pattern for each reviewing video. Nice job, Alec! Also, I would like you to review Chandler Limited REDD.47, REDD, and TG Microphone. REDD is my dream mic. And TG is one of those decent budget mics for creating some sort of unique vibe for a song. It'd be so nice to hear it from your perspective.
Fantastic sounding unit - the pre has so much body and the eq is fantastic..those smooth highs! The Flea is amazing. Great bit of songwriting again and the simplicity in your use of mics and subtle eq with that playing shows just how less really can be more. The DI sounds superb on the bass.
like I watched this and I thought wow thats a great sounding review - then hours later I realised that was one of the best drum mixes ive heard - they drum bus sounded so good snappy and colourful im in awe - really good work. - will be using this video as a reference
Cool and relaxing reviews! You really have a good vibe. Instant subscribe. In a year you should have more than 10k subscribers:) By the way from all preamps you have tried, which would you keep for the vocal chain? When it comes KU5A - do you see it as a studio mic?
Thanks very much! The Neumann V402 has really stuck with me as a serious contender. I miss having it in the studio daily. I absolutely see the KU5A as a studio mic. Loved it on guitars and bass.
This looks excellent for that Neve 1073 with EQ setup. This or a Neve 1073spx (just one channel). Curious why there are not many reviews and discussions on this and other Phoenix gear aside from sales demos It looks excellent but that makes me wonder.. Where are all of the Phoenix gear users?
It’s quite a different tone to the Neve stuff, but it’s a really great choice for an all-rounder in the studio! :) I’m surprised more people don’t talk about them too!
you have excellent videos, thank you! What do you think of the Ascent for recording Electric guitars, both DI and room? How does the sound compare in this regard to the new Neumann V402? Thanks again!
Thank you for the kind words! :) They are two very different approaches. The Phoenix has a beautiful tone, it is flexible and would be great at the applications you asked about. I really enjoyed its DI. The Neumann is really clean and transparent, so it really pushes your mic placement and mic choice. I really enjoyed using it with ribbon mics and valve microphones. The Neumann will really highlight what ever is feeding it. I hope that helps!
What do you use to mix through phoenix DIs? The phoenix N-8? I am considering it as an in between my daws 8 line outputs and my SSL Six... Thanks for the awesome video!
@@alecbrits awesome, thanks! What do you think of my idea of having the Phoenix N8 sit in between the DAW line outs and my SSL Six which I use for summing? Then i have clean to saturation options on 8 separate channels rather than just on the final mix buss... Almost like turning the SSL into a transformer based console when desired
I was thinking about doing the same for my console, but after some shooting out, the stereo Buss option was a little easier for me. That is also taking into account that I use the DI as an actual DI more than a Buss saturation unit. I’m not too familiar with the SSL six, so I’m not too sure what the combination would sound like.
I’ll be doing a mix workflow video next year. :) but the short of it is, it allows me to push into the console a little harder and back off the inputs of the Nice-DI. That allows me to not clip my converters, while also getting a little harmonic thickening from the Phoenix Output transformers. It’s not on every mix, but if I’m needing punch/character then this helps a lot to give the Audient console a little more girth. :) hope this helps.
Thank you so much Zane! :) I depends, if I could have a console full of mic pre’s it would be something from API. If I could only ever have one mic pre, it would be the Neumann V402.
Would you be able to review a 5211 (RND) or the Cranbourne EC2. These preamps have very similar feature sets and would help me as I’m looking to buy a two channel pre. After watching your other videos on the Neumann and Daking I’m finding it a tough decision.
@@alecbrits thanks for the reply. Very much looking forward to your thoughts on the cranbourne as well. £800 difference between them makes it a tough decision
cool . Can you give me some tip on studio gear ? Do you think Apogee Rosetta 200 will sound better than Universal audio 8 firewire ? the converters..Thank bro
@@deyanangelovangelov7471 I’m not too sure on those two units. What I will say is that modern converters really do sound pretty great across the board. A modern 8 channel interface will also allow you to not be left behind by newer operating systems and DAW upgrades, some of the older units are starting to loose support from the manufacturers.
@@alecbrits I see . It makes sense yes . How is your studio setup up ? You use the Audient mixer i think i sow and the rest .. ? Audio interface ..converters .. and what you have conected on the mix bus ? Thanks
All your reviews are great! I'm glad you don't have too many yet because I feel compelled to watch them all! ;-)
There are gonna be a lot more coming! :)
your musicality is the star of your channel
Thank you so much Stephen! :D
Sounds wicked, Alec! Nice tune as well which has been captured well through the unit. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks so much Tim! :D

Been a while since I checked in man.. you’re killing it ❤ 🤘🏻
Thanks so much Andrew! :)
Excellent review and playing! Made me buy my first outboard pre, Ascent one EQ.
Thank you so much! That’s awesome Richard, I hope you enjoy it for a long long time. :)
You deserve way more subscribers. Serious good work. Glad to have found your channel.
Thank you so much!! :D
This groove is so nice. I forgot I was trying to learn about the pre amp :D
That’s extremely kind. Thank you! :)
I keep coming back to this. Something about these pres. I want one now 🤔
Go for it! :)
Bought the 500 version, thanks for the thorough review. All handmade too that i like
Song is so good! Great video!

Would love to see a song using only Beyer mics. M88 standing proud here alongside much more expensive company
Hmmmm, that sounds like a really fun video. I’m a massive Beyer fan, will see what I can do to make that happen.
Great video and awesome sound! I have the Nicerizer, and looking to pick up one of these, loved the sound. Great stuff, 4 thumbs up!
Thank you so much!! :D
I really like how this preamp sounds but i wish they could put a tranformer at the input too, it smoothes out the transients in my opinion
I really enjoy the tone of this unit. :) there are so many transformer balanced options out there to choose from.
That sounded warm and smooth very rounded dam I dig this a lot would pouring a lauten eden with this be a good fit 🔥 thanks
Thanks so much Drake! I’ve not had a chance to try the Lauten mics yet, so I can’t honestly tell you.

Those drums sound so good! Do you prefer this over the Daking? Love my Daking but wondering if this will offer something different.
I think that I would have both. The darlings RULE on guitars and vocals. But the Phoenix has the ability to thicken up and colour things effortlessly.
Would be nice if you could review Chandler Limited TG microphone.
Sure thing! :) it’s on the list already.

Being that it’s stepped and has a PAD for “line”, you’d think they would push it as a mixing tool a bit more, considering it’s price
Agreed. :) would be a lovely drum buss insert.
@@alecbrits I spoke too soon! Went over to the Phoenix CZcams channel and they had several examples there
What do you use to mix through phoenix DIs? The phoenix N-8? I am considering it as an in between my daws 8 line outputs and my SSL Six... Thanks for the awesome video!
The console output used to go into the front of the Phoenix N-8. It added some solid glue and saturation as well as transparent clipping. :)

I like the sound even though not quite Neve, but I’m wondering if the Neve is more the tone I want from the get-go
The Neve-r ending questions we always ask!
Hey have you used the phoenix summing Nicerizer with the ascent?
I have not yet tried it.
Great video. Any chance you could try and demo a Neumann U47 FET reissue?
Already done. :)
I'd love to know more about why you mix through DIs.

what brand/model of piano did you use ?
That’s a great question, I have absolutely no idea. The previous owner painted the outside of the piano before I got to see it! :)
could you review an ultra strat? or the apollo x16
Sure thing! I think an X16 review would be fun. Every video of mine with the exception of the Neve 1073 OPX is recorded through the X16’s.
