for a second i thought he was going to make the entire thing out of metal.
I thought that too, carving out all these pawns = ouch
+Ashish Patel I will admit though the whole thing out of metal would have looked awesome.
+Ashish Patel Yeah, would have loved to see a Brass vs Aluminum set or some made by Diresta. I've seen once a gold and silver cast set... on a very tiny chessboard...
I was slightly bummed when I realized he was making molds. Still, a very nice set of pieces. I'm sure there are none better.
+Ashish Patel Then I thought, oh, he'll cast them all from bronze or something.
About two years ago, I randomly came across one of Jimmy's videos on youtube. The mirror frame. I had nothing to do with woodworking or craftsmanship whatsoever and had never touched a power tool in my life. I was so inspired that I decided to give it a try, bought a jigsaw and started playing with recycled wood found in the streets.
I loved it so much I decided to work hard and try to make this my next job.
Before my 28th birthday next year I'll quit my job and try to start a little furniture business.
The little I know I've learned from his videos. The rest I'll figure out.
Thanks Jimmy for the inspiration and helping me figure out what I really wanted to do with my life.
Wow thank you for that!!
+jimmydiresta This is exactly what people can feel and want to do when they watch your videos! To me, it's more than a pleasure to watch your videos, it's an honour, really!
Merry Christmas Jim to you and tou your family, and all the best for 2016!!!
+nitsn like you jimmy inspire me a lot and i start like you a nez project in my life check out my videos :)))) thx a lot.
be patiente with me i m a noob woodworker :P
+nitsn I wish you good luck, man! You are great!
+nitsn Great story, thanks for sharing. +jimmydiresta also inspired me to at least start tinkering again, him and +Paul Sellers, the yin and yang of master craftsmen.
That knight is just beautiful. Awesome my friend.
+Clickspring THANK YOU brother!!! you and mr pete inspired me to use the indexer!! Mad love!!
+jummydiresta
+clickspring
so awsome that i see you two together here, awsome work you two do here on CZcams
+jimmydiresta can you building an aluminium phonecase?i love your projects man, i love your laboratory!! I FUCKING LOVE HANDMADE INNOVATIONS!!! keep this cool work and stay heavy!!\m/
You know, you could've left some talent for the rest of us!
Seriously, you have got to be THE most talented person alive... your skills are extraordinary!
Amazing craftsmanship as always, love the depth of field on the lathe shots and the touch of humor that's always brought with Dave around!
Troll: Oh, yeah? Let's see you make a knight! You'll never be able to lathe a kni ...
... oh.
+WesleyTreat Score yourself 5 bonus points for the best comment.
Level up
I did 75% of it then hand the rest
Yes, clever, but "lathe" is a noun, not a verb. You MACHINE on a LATHE. Literacy. It's a good thing.
Acting so smart on the internet however you could not notice his comment is more than 2 years old.
Logic, awareness and perception. These are real priorities. ALWAYS.
I'm amazed a razor knife blade is capable of shaping metal like that.
It's brass, it's way softer than steel.
+Falutin Free Also, the blade looks hardened. I'm not an expert, though, so I can't be sure.
+pikachu1324 The metal that you are 'cutting' with simply needs to be harder than the metal being cut. Steel is harder than brass. Yeah, it was a creative tool idea, right?!
the carve of the knight is my favorite! so cool.
SPEECHLESS!! Simply the coolest turning I've ever seen!!
This one was great! Awesome work Jimmy!!!
Clickspring and Diresta are two different things. You can see Jimmy is an artist, freehand work on the lathe. Clickspring is obviously a precision Engineer with good workshop processes, by the book. Both are mesmerising and Ive seen all their videos. Both are to be admired and respected.
Outstanding workmanship, looks fantastic.
Simply amazing work that you can do!! Blown away!!
"How's he going to make the Knights?"
"oh."
This is my all time favorite video. It reminds me of the chisel video so I may be biased! Thanks for sharing!
amazing james... you are an artist!!! my respects
Just amazing! Great work Jimmy!
Wow, I cant believe you did all that in 14 minutes!
the video was time lapsed to make it faster. It probably took about 35 minutes
+Im In Your Closet I'm pretty sure they were joking, and doing this would take hours if not days.
+Yasmin Grasse you must be new to sarcasm but yes, you're probably correct.
+BlackHawk TV oh I get it now. the second thing was ALSO a joke. that is humorous.
londontrada hhu
Touchdown! Awesome vid!
The way it should be done... Awesome craftsmanship!
This is JUST AWESOME! Your so much talented Diresta!
Giving Clickspring a run for his money. ;)
+Adam Melanin his bar is way high!!!! i can't reach it!!!
+jimmydiresta Keep practicing until you can limbo just under the bar!
+jimmydiresta hi please check out my video it wud be a Honor and subscribe Thanks
+Adam Melancon chess pieces are easy compared to a clock which has to be precise
+IIGrayfoxII You don't say.
Dann that was so cool! You're killin it!
Thanks bro!!
+PictishPrince i was thinking the exact same thing. Wouldn't even blink at the cost.
+PictishPrince I was thinking brass and steel!
+Kyle Toth that chess game wasn't over you could've blocked
Kyle Toth u
That is amazing! I love watching these videos and seeing all the creative things you make. Keep it up DiResta!
Jimmy, you are so awesome to watch. Beautiful work as always.
Turning a round object on a metal lathe using the wheels? You must be an Etch-A-Sketch master.
Probably makes his own badass etch-a-sketch!
Maybe Steve Ramsey still needs a chess set...
lol, am sure one of his viewers made and sent him a set a while ago
his viewers have, in small bits. It's in one of his mere minutes videos.
+Dave Starr With pocket joints!
If you see this Jimmy: Go and make steve Ramsey a christmas gift (ofc if you dont need the molds anymore)
i would love to see a set of chess with one clear half and the other half being dyed with some blueish kind of dye.
or a set that glows in the dark
or with black light
hte possibilitys are endless
+NearFall2Pin I thought it was other Woodworking CZcamsrs who did it.
Awesome set, Jimmy. What I like about this project in particular is that you've shown how a craftsman can take hold of an efficient means of production like casting. For a person trying to make a living with their art, this sort of thing is a hell of a boon. The fact that everything is produced in house maintains the artisanal aspect that people love about handmade and craftsman-made items. You're fun to watch but you're also an inspiration!
You never cease to amaze man awesome stuff!!!!
white always moves first in chess... but i guess you knew that already...
+Dollar Bill Always, but not in real life.
+Dollar Bill touchdown, trollbait
+Dollar Bill
racist.
+Dollar Bill Basically it doesnt matter witch one moves first
about to post the same thing, assuming Jimmy is trolling, as he may say it, "chess nerds".
I can't wait to see you make a chess clock now.
+Jairred Stephens Or maybe Bob wants to make one
That Chess set turned out awesome and LOL the 2 moves check mate at the end was priceless. Thumbs up Jimmy you are a true artist.
Such hard work and patience !! Respect.
Being able to play a game of chess with Jimmy Diresta on this exceptional set was an honor and a joy. Thanks a ton, Jimmy D, you're an inspiration!!
+Dominic Del Principe Thank you brother was fun and educational !!
peace and love!
+Dominic Del Principe just saying whit did not at al Winn. it whas blacks turn to move after he got checkt and black culd easily block that move.
+96mikaell So?
+Dominic Del Principe So, you never actually were able to play a game of chess with Jimmy Diresta on that exceptional set. You just moved pieces around..
Yeah, you're right. We didn't play a game. We just moved the pieces around the board, according to the rules of chess. You're a sharp one, bud
Awesome!!!!
👊🏼💥👊🏼💥
+Владислав Воронов
+100 ))))
+Владислав Воронов Кстати из металла то они по пизже были))) Смола - дешовенько смотрится
+Максим Целиков вообще думал, что металлические будут "белыми", а смола черными, а он вон как поступил
Truly gifted.
I have the utmost respect for the talent you display.
My favourite video of yours Jimmy! The skill is next level, and the lighting and shooting in this one is some of your best! Awesome project!
Wow!! Nice horse - a masterpiece for sure
It's a knight in chess.
+MTBVeggie Rich Depends on where you from, in germany e.g. it's called jumper or horse.
***** hmm fair enough then, did not know that.
+MTBVeggie Rich the knight is a horse
+sik59rt - Historically, no horses have ever been knighted. It's all fun and games until someone gets lanced through the eye... ;-)
Again I am amazed. All I want for X'mas is a Jimmy Diresta sticker, I swear I've been a good girl.😁
🎄☺️😉send a SASE to POBox 20270 NYC 10009
MERRY CHRISTMAS TO MEEEEEE!!!😁😁😁😁😁😉
Great job. Funny ending. "Touchdown"!!!
Absolutely amazing work, Jimmy!
A diresta video, at 2:30am? Sure.
7:30am for me - perfect
Dave was like the squirrel in the nyc video with the pigeons.
Hahahahaha!!!!
Jimmy, this might be one of my favorite videos of yours. It was awesome to see what each step evolved into. Also that trick with the knife on the lathe was pretty cool, never seen that one before. Great job!
Beautifully done !!
White moves first... Just sayin...
Does it matter
+David Waelder I read all the comment just to see Waelder on troll patrol. "So is your coffee if you drink it to fast" #gotem 😂😂😂
+themrnorwood Patroll heh
+themrnorwood it's annoying when people have to knit pick in a less than pleasant fashion- and this safety shit is important but my god man- I mean how the fuck did we ever discover what berries Not to eat... Being stupid is asking for doom - sure. Doing your best to consider safety while thinking fresh is how we got out of caves and walked upright- with collateral damage of course...gotta pay the troll toll I suppose.
+David Waelder artist and a poet eh? Can you dance too? That quote should be on the back of the registration card in every tool purchase.
Why didn't you use solid gold? It's much more malleable than brass... Imo just sayin
+David Waelder Exactly what I was thinking. If Jimmy ever wants to be a real Maker he needs to stop playing around.
that brass could been rubibish someone left there.
or it is store bought wich is much more likely
+David Waelder I expected Moon Rock carved chess pieces. : )
+David Waelder Well, time to clean up under the table saw again.
+G3RMANARMY from the recycle place i go to .. free
I am always mesmerized by lathe work. When you put the gnurled shaft to the bandsaw it took me a moment and ....Whammo. With that project you won before you even started playing.
A joy to watch this process and your skill! Love the ending!
This is a really awesome idea! Just curious, what's the pressure cooker-looking thing for? Does it add pressure or is it a vacuum?
+Ed McKenna Jr pressure eliminates (most) air bubbles.. Thank you !!
+jimmydiresta I know the guys here do the opposite and use a vaccum to get rid of bubbles but they have a clear perspex front on their vaccum chamber so they know when it has stopped bubbling that they will have the perfect mold cast. I like your method though too - less watching/monitoring required.
the mold material and the resin is muy expensiveo
i really wanted to read through all the comments so i didn't ask the same question but there are just so many so please forgive me if this has been asked.
why go through the trouble to make the metal (brass) pieces if your just going to make plastic molds?
wouldn't it be alot easier and cheaper to use wood or something easier to work with?
i only ask because i wanted to try some molding myself and just wondering ,also king of intimidating if i had to go with a metal master copy.
thanks
+James Delvechio i used brass bc the finish would be better than wood .. and i wanted more machine / mill lathe experience. only way to learn is to do. Thank You!
Cuz is one of a kind thing people like me want. It ain’t any chess peace it’s unique with the creators on creative thinking.
you guys are simply AWESOME artists! I'm glad to know your job!
America's Master Maker does it again! Amazing build Jimmy. Thanks for sharing!
i hope i can save up enough money for a metal lathe someday...
The knight kinda looks like a Moomin
Nice job. Thoroughly enjoyable to watch.
This is what absolute mastery on a lathe looks like. Amazing video, awesome edit. Jimmy you're an inspiration.
Just to let you know white moves first always
#BlackChessPeicesMatter
He's a proffesional carpenter,not Bobby Fischer.
M'aiq the liar He's not even Bobby Brady. That's kind of a basic part of the game. That would be like running to third base after hitting a pitch and saying, well, he' s not DiMaggio.
Rotwang72 My point is , he`s a carpenter . He doesn`t give a damn xD
wow,so racist.
All that, and then black goes first... agghhhh!
and dont forget the touchdown
Your an Artist man! Simply amazing!!
Amazing talent! Whatever you touch comes out perfect, be it brass, wood, steel or leather or (I think) any other material that can be processed by hand. Another gorgeous art work from Mr. DiResta. Thank you for sharing the video!
Why not clay? or any other form of mold-able material like wax? were you more confident in this method? First watching i thought the whole set would be made the same way with metal... non the less it looks awesome, but a handmade set of chess pieces all made individual would be so good :o
great stuff though! :)
I think he chose brass for looks. In other words it would have taken lots more time for a complete metal set. Even though used for molds he still now has the brass pieces that look cool and he can keep on the shelf.
+Vixolent I might be wrong on this, but I suspect you could get more castings out of a brass master than a clay master.
+Vixolent I think Jimmy just likes playing with new tools. He just got the lathe and he talked about trying to improve his skills on it. No better way than making some small, intricate pieces. I could be wrong though.
+Bitterman Brewing THANK YOU! Now THAT sounds like the most reasonable answer. I couldn't for the life of me figure out why make originals in such a laborious manner only to cast the final pieces. I'd have made them out of clay, for God's sake!
i am 3 mins in the video and started wondering how he is going to make the horse
you mean the knight?
Jimmy, I just wanted to say that I'm really happy that you've monetized your videos! I love your work and it's great that you're getting something back for all the hours of entertainment :)
Gorgeous work!
All this work to play the first move with black...
Jessie's Girl at 1:13
Jimmy u are one talented man just love watching your videos
Your skills are absolutely amazing!
awesome work. love this.
WHOA! Them skills on the Horse! Simply awesome, as always!
That machined metal noise through headphones in the speedy up bits gives me the shivers haha
You my dear man are gifted!
Esse cara é sensacional. Ele é polivalente. Faz trabalhos incríveis. Produz artesanalmente coisas inimagináveis. Muito bom.
Fantastic workmanship really enjoyable footage love it 👍👏
Amazing, tnx for sharing Mr. Diresta.
I real respect what you have done.... excellent !!!!
Outstanding craftsmanship.....checkmate!!
I was thinking like 'then where the hack is the chess board?' and you just painted your table and that was it!!!
So impressed with your creativeness!
Always enjoying your work!
Amazing. You are a very skilled and clever man.
Epic work as always Jimmy!
One of the best stuff to see..
Cool Set , great Idea.
I've done some lathe work and is insane how you can freehand so accurately! You are a crazy mix between a craftsmen and an artist love your videos!
Nice Jimmy. Thanks for the constant inspiration to make things. Merry Christmas to you and yours.
Jimmy you are an artist, very little people have the skill and patience to do what you do. And the rook (mind = blown) there is no words to describe how awesome that was to watch you do
This is the best christmass present from jimmy, making metal chess pieces! Awesome
You are just like my Papa... so experienced and intelligent with your hands. I wish I could spend a day with you in the shop. I would learn so much.
That is awesome Jimmy.
Just beautiful.
TOUCHDOWN!!! That look on Davids face? Priceless.
Oh Jimmy, you are a awesome handyman... congrats!!
I'm baffled. Why does anyone give Jimmy a thumbs down? He's obviously an artist/master craftsman. Is it jealousy? Anger issues? What? Any guesses?
Dude, you can make absolutely anything. Unreal! Nice job.
You are a freak! You never cease to amaze me with your work!
I already say it ... Your videos are like classic music or poetry! Your abilities, knowledge are amazing!
Looks amazing!
Super nice. Great job.
Top notch quality video, jimmy!
Incredible, this is really amazing! Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful...
Wow!! Can't wait to see how you make the board
