- Train horns! is a video series that listens to different types of air horns used on North American locomotives at railroad crossings.
Part 8 concludes the series, featuring the Leslie RS5T dubbed "The King of Train Horns" although, many would probably argue that title belongs to the M5. I'll let you viewers decide: please comment your thoughts below!

Once common on just about every carrier in the country, especially on eastern railroads, this horn has become scarce over the years, but still exists in some capacity on Norfolk Southern and some CSX yard locomotives. Norfolk Southern retired a lot of yard locomotives that had RS5T's, but many of those horns ended up on SD60E's that were rebuilt during the same time period, which we'll see in this video. A lot of horns ended up on short lines or in the hands of collectors. CSX, after all, literally threw out hundreds out these horns when fitting their fleet with Nathan K5LA's.

This is my favorite train horn. I love its hauntingly apocalyptic sound.
*NS 6920*
Description:
Has a badass train horn just like itself.
Mr. New Jersey Transit, Do not make fun of the Norfolk Southern Veterans Locomotive!
Deborah Maciak he said badass. Meaning it's cool.
USED TO
Deborah Maciak Badass means it’s good.
Reading Area Railfan Oh they replaced it?
Love the growl these horns have. Up here in New England we have Pan Am MEC 350 which has a killer ex N&W RS5T on it. I’ve had my chest thumped by this horn many times in Windsor CT on the Amtrak Springfield line when it leads EDPL (East Deerfield MA-Plainville CT) and PLED.
Those former N&W Leslie 5-chimes are some of the best, especially the true S5T's with the deeper tones.
Yep
oh wow it does? i live in this area and ive never heard it..
1:33 this sends chills right to spine
Same the echo
Yes it reminds me of a local scenic railroad never noticed it was an rs5t before
Same!
That’s was nice 😊
1:42 did it for me when that back bell kicked in🔥🔥🔥
My pants were down around my ankles by the end of this
HA!
Wut
TMI!
Looks like we have a mad wacker loose
I-
Whaa?
At least I have a K5HL.
Just imagine your stuck on the tracks and hear this 7:20, your life is done
God that is the worst rs5t I ever heard because it's fouled
You Gotta Lookout For Yourself!
I have heard a worse fouled horn
5:21 That does not even sound foul. But the distant Safetran Mechanical Bell sounded a bit erie
Gotta love the 5T horns! With them kinda changing tone and sound as decades went on. I personally prefer the older 1950s and 1960s S-5Ts since they sound more smoother and musical.
Yep I agree, those RS Chambers sure do make Leslie horn sound scary. The older S ones like you said, were more melodious. But, oh the character!
Hakeem Sd70M indeed
Hmm
Definitely. I grew up here in California near the Santa Fe. They used the Leslie RS3L and it was a more melodic sound. The loud horns nowadays sound more like an electronic "buzz" or a claxon. They remind me of God's "Dial Tone"
1:17 This is what railfans hear when they ascend to Heaven.
Hello
Yeah
Agreed
Absolutely
This over a Hancock Long 3 Chime?
It's good to to hear the Leslie horns again.
A bunch of the ex NW SD40-2s still have some. They've been out on the road alot lately, more notably 6092. Caught that one in Manassas leading on 36Q.
capeck1993 wat.... I live near Manassas but I haven’t seen a ex N&W SD40-2 recently
@@NOVARailandWeatherEnthusiast There's a pair working the V92/V94 job on the H-Line in the Shenandoah/Waynesboro region.
One of my favorite horn-sets besides the P5 and M5 horns.
Fantastic collection here. These things can sound very eerie and spectral, especially at a distance on a clear night.
I absolutely adore the Leslie 5 chimes, the RS5T King of All Train Horns. I always think back to what it must have been like to hear the RS5T roar its mighty tune on the mainlines of the old N&W and the C&O, both long before my time.
Great work, it must have taken you days to edit this project.
As of my writing this comment, it's literally been a full year since I've heard an RS5T in person. Oh...Now I'm depressed...
Thanks for making these series! They’re wonderful
Excellent shot! the Leslie RS5T sounds really good in this shot.
Great compilation again. The only RS5T I heard ever came from NS 8120 lol!
A GEVO with a RS5T? Not surprised. NS works with what they got more than the other Class I's, that's for sure. Why I love NS! lol
Middle Tennessee Rail Productions I was surprised when I first heard it!
I've been trying to catch that one for quite some time but haven't seen it yet. I believe NS 8120 received that horn in 2016, so not sure what happened to it's K5HL.
@@CentralPennRailProductions Meh. Who cares about the commoner K5HL. lmao 😅 I'll take a bigger mix-up of horns any day!
SEE AGAIN NOT EVEN A MINUTE AND I SEE YOU IN ANOTHER COMMENT SECTION XD
Wow!! That left turn light at 10:00 is out of another era!!
Amazing video
Edit: OMG THANKS YOU DID THE TRAIN HORN VIDEO I ASKED FOR
Haha yes, I got around to it finally! Thanks!
6916’s RS5T is so fouled, when in the distance and the after effects on it make it sound like a ghost train.
I love this type of RS5T, the RRO 1:33
Nothing beats a 5 chime!❤️. That's what a train horn is supposed to sound like!!!❤️❤️❤️
Lots of work involved in this you do a fine job
Hey thanks for watching!
Favorite horn of all time! I’ve only caught like 4 of them and all of them had the famous 37 bell dead....
Ouch yeah, so many of these are fouled and not well maintained. Thanks for watching!
I work for a shortline and we run 2 locomotives, one with a rebuilt Nathan P5, and the other, an RS5T, both are pretty awesome sounding.
I love this video so much. I have only heard one of these horns and it was on CSX 1776. I love how all of them have their own unique sound
Great video compilation and camera work! Greetings from Italy. Ciao, Stefano :-)
Ah yes the most beast sound horn ever! I've caught 6920 pulling a hot shot Trailer Train leading plus a horn show. I gotta love the RS5T the beefiness of the sound of that thing just gets goosebumps on your arms. It is the SCL's main horn and it is wayyyy better than the K5LLA! Again I love these videos keep it up!
Thanks for the comment. The RS5T has always been my favorite horn, but I think they sound a lot better on a manual valve set-up.
I got an RS5T and multiple RS3Ls on the B&P
I caught an RS5T on NS 6121, & 6166, really nice sounding horns.
1:33 Creepy echo
NS 6160 has a RS5T with one bell not sounding, making it sound like a SL4T
While not my favorite horn, I really enjoyed the video ... I think the NS 2502 with the fouled horn sounded the best to me .... Thanks Eric
2502's horn almost sounds like an RS3L in this case. Thanks again!
FDNY8231 2916 also had a fouled horn
When your grandma screams at a weird tone 8:58
I saw 6943 a bunch of times
The best horn I have ever heard. Wonderful video!
Thanks! It's definitely one of my favorite horns.
*Awesome Video Nice I Like The Leslie RS5T Train Horns*
RS5T is such a cool sound and definitely one of the most classic train horns, but for me nothing beats a good M5 or P3.
6:31 #2 of the best RS5T in this vid
Now has a K5LA, matter a fact, all RS5T are now gone....
Edit: 4006 has a RS5T, but fouled to sound like a RS3L
@@NS6711 NS 4006 RS5T sounds like 7550 which lost its RS5T
@@bnsf4715 Pretty much does
@@NS6711 I think NS swapped horns with 4006 and 7550 and gave 7550 a K5LA and 4006 it's RS5T
Congrats on 100K!!!!
Back in the1990s metro north railroad had some EMD F10s (built from F3s) that they had used on their Waterbury ct branch and they had leslie S5T horns. Sounded very good.
I was going to some place in Laurinburg, NC when the gates went down. CSX AC6000CW came through with a RS5T
Road number?
I love the horn on NS 6920 . It's probably my favorite horn in it's class
Well it’s gone now 😡
@@northernohiorailfanningpro8899 6920 was a victim of a truck collision
@@Mrmonkey19888 correct. I got to see it about a week before it hit the truck. At least it’s back out ok the road.
caused its horn to be extremely folued
So fouled that it sounded like a screaming goat on cocaine
Congrats on 100k!
Horn sound really good
Do you think the S5T and the RS5T sound the same? The ATSF F Units had the S5T’s
Kinda
Darn good video, all the way around!
Great video I love 6920’s horn.
Thanks, it's a neat locomotive and horn!
Love that NS veterans unit!❤️
Me too!
@@CentralPennRailProductions me three
NS 6920, NS 9172, & NS 6916 sounded very good. And I love this railroad and also N&W Railroad.
The N&W Railroad was great, I love the CPL signal masts.
Me too
Awesome video!
Thanks!
It really is depressing to know that the majority of these locomotives are now gone. I miss the old NS...
Very smooth sounding horns...a bit like a trumpet.
Btw, please don't foam...just appreciate what you hear!
Haha that's some good advice! Thanks for watching
Too late
Yes It Is, That RS5T Horn!
I’ve had 3 close encounters with RS5Ts but I’ve never heard one of these monsters in person. I want to hear 6920’s most of all. That compressor makes the king SHRIEK!
I hope someday you get to hear an S5T or an RS5T in person, they are every bit as loud, throaty, and mighty as you may have heard. However, the K5HL and K5LLA are just as loud in person but neither horn sounds as good as a Leslie an my opinion. Happy rails!
Beats the hell out of any 3rd gen K5LA anyday! Growing up, I used to fall asleep to these horns when heard from several miles away!
i heard one of those on the only NS foreign power i've seen here on the CN line
It's a shame that you really don't hear leslie rs5t horns anymore since that is my all time favorite train horn ever.
Don’t here many Rs5t’s now a days. Those train horns are always awesome.
Not to mention that NS 8120 also has a Leslie RS5T, as well.
I love the way these things sound.
Are there any BNSF units with a RS5T?
@F1w Neat* autocorrect made a face
Nice horns!
Still upset I've only ever caught one on video in my 25 years, but it's definitely better than nothing.
Also I love that clip at 1:16. That echo is so haunting.
I know your frustration. They're now so rare that your chances of catching one at a convenient time are not very good. And if you do its likely a cylinoit controlled and not lever and heavily restricted
Carl Zipperman dude I saw I gevo with a rs5t so likeeeeee idk
I’ve heard a toot on csx 3194s rs5t and it sounded awsome, rs5ts are the king of horns no doubt about it
Zanesville and Western Scenic Railroad ex Buckeye Central Scenic Railroad, Penn Central and Pennsylvania Railroad EMD SW1 #8599 has an experimental Leslie RS5T Horn. U.S. Air Force Alco MRS-1 #2104 and Chesapeake and Ohio EMD GP7 #5833 also have primer Leslie Rs5t horns.
The RS5T horns were used on SCL before CSX was formed that’s why some of the CSX locomotives have RS5T horns
You cannot beat that horn!
Although no true ones were known to be made, the Leslie S5A is king in my opinion.
Yes, older 5 chime Leslies are better than these newer ones by leaps and bounds! Thanks for watching.
Central Penn Rail Productions no problem. The Leslies in this video sound very nice, but I wish 1 or 2 S5A's were around today.
Ever watched any videos of Arizona eastern (azer) 6070? That engine has one of the best rs5ts I have ever heard.
I got my own RS5T a couple months ago
I like these
And then they changed 6920s. I got 6934 and it sounds identical to what 20 used to have
In this video, they're mostly SD60E units that have RS5T horns.
I can tell that some CSX / NS Leslie RS5T horns mean that the locomotives are still Conrail trains
I love this horn beside the RS3L
Every train should have one of these.
that is the same train horn we have in Australia used on the v/line n class nicked name "dog bones"
These horns sound amazing and evil like especially at night but they wear out to quickly.
0:44 I've been inside that train station before. and have railfanned at that same crossing.
Sweet haunting music!
CSX GP40-2 # 4421 also has an RS5T horn
7:01 That idiot almost got hit. 3 more seconds and he would have been dead.
The one on the CSX GP40-2 was just a raw S5T
NS 6916 in the distance sounded like a fouled K5LA!
Love all the SD60Es!
NS#6920 (RS5T) SD60E (HONORING OUR VETERANS)
It would've been the greatest day of your life if you got a shave and a haircut from 6920's RS5T
I personally think the K5la is he most known and probably the king of all horns or maybe queen?
The RS5T Is My Favorite!
CSXT#7703 (RS5T) C40-8W
Is it just me, or do these sound 10/10 on a dash 9?
This train horn says killer train coming thru😂
I wonder how loud they are against super car engines
Interesting comparison. Like the full throttle of a Lamborghini/Audi V10!
Have you ever hear 65j,64j,242, 243 recently there new symbols the ns runs I just want to know if anybody head them before.
64J and 65J used to be the trash trains. Then they became 67J and 66J, now 62V and 63V. I believe they did this to make room for more tanker train symbols which occupy the 64, 65, 66, and 67 number slots. 64J and 65J are LPG trains from Wheeling & Lake Erie, I belive. 242 / 243 are now marine stacks from Global Container Terminal in Bayonne. This is also a recycled symbol because 242 used to be a Triple Crown roadrailer to Harrisburg, but now that those are gone they reused the number.
CSXT#6977 (S5T) GP40-2
3:05 that horn was been used for roblox audio. I guess? And my favorite.
Is there any way to bring them back into commission. Leslie is the best. Love the RS3Ls too.

what camera do you use? you're using a tripod right?
I'm amazed by the quality of filming!!
This was back when I used a Sony AX-100. Now I use a Panasonic HC-X1500 in my newer videos. I also have a GH5 I use from time to time.
