    The Camino Frances from St Jean Pied de Port to Santiago de Compostela an almost 800 km journey across northern Spain in the month of August with temperatures around 40 degrees Celsius in only 26 days. I am seventy years old and this my eighth Camino but my first Camino Frances. You ask why? then come with me in this journey to find out why I broke so many barriers and discover that the Camino Frances is effectively three different Caminos- the Pyrenees and la Rioja to Burgos, la Meseta to Leon and finally over the mountains into Galicia to Santiago de Compostela.
    I was born in Spain but my family migrated to Australia in 1962 and I do Caminos to reconnect with my country of birth. I have done seven Caminos in the past, the Norte, Primitivo, Lebaniego, Vadiniense, Salvador, Portugues and Muxia Finisterre but this is my first Camino Frances. I am a bushwalker hiker in Australia and I have uploaded more than 160 videos in CZcams and 90% of my hikes are totally off track, no trails.

    I have done seven Caminos in the past but the Camino Frances the most popular Camino was not one of them, find out why and why I did it in the extreme heat of August with temperatures of 40 degrees Celsius in only 26 days. Well I have just turned seventy and I want to inspire people of all ages to the joys of the Camino, there are no barriers and there are no reasons why anyone shouldn't do a Camino whether you are young or old.

    I am 75 years old Scot and have done ten Caminos.
    I begin my next one on May 1st, walking the Camino Fonseca from Salamanca.
    I have walked the Frances four times and consider it to be the best despite the crowds from Sarria.
    My first Frances was in 2007 and started in Poitiers.
    My most recent Frances was last year finishing on September 25th.I then caught the bus North to Ferrol and walked the Camino Ingles.
    Most pilgrims don't know why the Camino Frances is called the Frances.
    It's not because it starts in St. Jean Pied de Port as most people assume.

      Thanks Harry, well done hope all the best for your upcoming Camino in May, it's a bit wet now in mainland Spain and by May you should be right. I am only a few days from my four Caminos from SJPDP on April 1

    So many parallels, I will walk my 8th Camino starting in March 2024. I will be 71. I migrated to Australia in 1962 (living im Melbourne). My parents came from Bilbao and my grandparents from Galicia.

      Yes so many parallels, Ruben when in March I leave Australia 20th March and will spend time with family then begin from SJPDP on April 1 and will hopefully be in Santiago 30 April. I lived in Geelong in 1962 then we moved to Sydney where I grew up. I wouldn't mind exchanging email address if that isn't to forward, buen Camino

      @@minimalist5555life Thanks I am glad that the Camino has inspired you to do it as well, as far as costs go I would have said between 40-50 euros when I did that video last August but after doing five consecutive Caminos from SJPDP from April 1 it is more like 50 euros daily that includes accommodation in albergues about 15-18 euros and food, it's much cheaper if you buy food from supermarkets and cook meals. Buen Camino

      @@JoeCarmona it certainly is , I’ve never been able to complete a full Camino in one go because I can’t get the time, I normally go for 10 days to two weeks , I’ve done this 19 times over the years and have finished the Franeces twice in stages, the Portuguese twice and half of the northern route .
      One day I hope to get the time to do a full one in one go, probably the Plata .
      I also lived in Oz for 11 years , great country, you’re a lucky man, still can’t believe you did 40km in 40* , you’re Superman .
      Buen Camino 🙏

    In Irache winery, there is a scripture at the walls, which read”Be respectful” so I saw a hiker filing a filled half a litre bottle with wine. I ask if it’s is lack of respect or ignorance.

    • @JoeCarmona
      @JoeCarmona  Před 3 měsíci +2

      Thanks, there is a sign in Spanish "Normas de Uso" Rules of Use "beber sin abusar" drink without abuse, it doesn't specify an amount but what it does state that if you want to take the wine they would like you to purchase it from the winery. There is a total limit of 100 litres per day from the fountain so if you happen to stay in Estella 3 kms from Irache then you will have the best chance to sample pure wine. I had stayed in Cirauqui some 17kms away so when I arrived mid afternoon unfortunately it was more water than wine as one of the Spanish members of the group called out "clarete" watered down wine. There is also a web camera that is on 24/7 that allows you to see the pilgrims visiting the fountain. Buen Camino

      Muchas gracias Chris yo tambien ire mas lento cuando haga mis cuatro Caminos consecutivos en Abril y Mayo.
      I had a shoulder dislocation climbing out of a gorge only seven weeks ago and I am still recovering as I fly out to Spain next week and begin my Camino from SJPDP on April1 and as we share the same age isn't great that we are still able to do this. I don't have a favourite Camino only the one that you are currently doing, they are all different in so many ways. I wish you a buen Camino for May

      @Gardenwatch Před 3 měsíci +1

      Hopefully your shoulder recovers quickly. I am very grateful for being a pilgrim at 70! This year in May my average mileage will be reduced from 15 to 12 miles per day. You captured the spirit of the Camino beautifully! Buen Camino!

      @JoeCarmona  Před 4 měsíci

      Thanks glad you liked it, the Albergue en el Camino in Boadilla has room for 70 people in bunk beds and private rooms in hotel next door has a great communal dinner for 13.5 Euros and cheap breakfast for 3.5 Euros was great relaxing in the pool as that day I had done some 38kms in close to 40c in the meseta. One of the best albergues of the Camino, buen Camino

    Very much enjoyed your video. I start the Frances from SJPDP in mid April this year. It will be my first time doing the Frances having previously walked the Portuguese Central from Lisbon and the Portuguese Coastal from Porto, both in the last two years (started on my 60th in 2022). Like most people I’ve been bitten by the Camino bug and hopefully I can continue one Camino each year for the foreseeable future. I walked from Lisbon to Santiago in 26 days but felt it was rushed so this time plan to take my time as I have no flight home booked. Luckily, I can hop a flight from Santiago back to Edinburgh, Scotland fairly easily so no rush this time. Your video has really whetted my appetite.
    Can I ask, did you have any issues finding a bed? I’m expecting the Frances to be much, much busier that the Portuguese routes.

    • @JoeCarmona
      @JoeCarmona  Před 4 měsíci +3

      Thank you very much glad you liked it last August I only booked my accommodation in SJPDP, Leon because I wanted to stay in the same hostel as I did in 2018 and Trabadelo because I wanted to stay there the other times I winged it including the last 100 kms from Sarria to Santiago by not staying in the set stages.
      I will be in front of you as I plan to do four consecutive Caminos beginning April 1 from SJPDP and so far I have only booked SJPDP and Roncesvalles but I hear that late April and May is usually much busier than August as the weather is ideal for walking so if you aren't rushed and know where you want to be most nights then obviously book not all but important stages, have a Buen Camino and I might see you in Santiago, look for the Aussie with Akubra hat

      I have walked ten Caminos and have never met another Scottish pilgrim.
      I'm from Fife and like you I intend to walk every year that my body allows.
      I find it easier to catch a bus to Porto airport and fly back to Edinburgh nonstop.
