300HP Ecotec-Swapped 1963 Volvo P1800 - One Take

- This 1963 Volvo P1800 is an incredibly detailed resto-mod build by Los Angeles craftsman Dean Williams, whose name you may remember because he built the VFR800-powered Honda N600, one of the best cars I've ever driven.
The engine is a turbocharged and direct injected Ecotec 2.0L four-cylnder tuned for around 300 HP to move the Volvo's 2,400 lb weight. It has a modern gearbox, independent rear suspension, and a locking differential. Though the car isn't quite completed on the inside, Mr. Williams wanted to let me have a go before we end the series.
Check out the complete build thread here:

Check out Dean's other build, the Honda N600 with 12,500 RPM VR800 Engine!

Dean Williams is my dad, and as his daughter it is the most heartwarming thing to have these videos to keep forever and see all the loving comments. Thank you all for admiring my dad’s work. He is the most humble, loving father I could ever ask for, and incredibly talented. I love seeing his involvement in the car community. You all rock!
The exterior is beautiful. Love the wheel choice. I'm really going to miss this series.
Volvo really needs a cool new coupe to make the brand a little more hip.
Jeff K they are coming out with a polestar sports coupe. Should be pretty quick and looks pretty hot
Polestar is a separate brand now. The new coupe will be electric and hybrid.
Jeff K
I miss the C70, that car had a simple design and was so elegant.
Beautiful.
@nic jones I meant "hybrid"- electric and gasoline.
"I don't drive it like this" well it's about time someone did 👌
WDA911
Pedal on the right...
I've seen the P1800-P2000 a couple of times, in my opinion it's one of the most beautiful cars of all time. Perfect design. I want one.
yeah i guy at cars and coffee here drove one in and its was ratty as all hell but you could just tell it was still a great design. I wanted it bad at taht point, seeing this i want one even more.
I got a buddy putting a rocket v8 in a p1800 (the wagon) on a ranger frame. Should be fun.
OH MAN! One Takes going out with a BANG!
When has he decided to end the series and why? Can't find it anywhere...
czcams.com/video/9OefRT6K8x8/video.html
Orxon oh so he's got a bunch saved up that he's releasing until he runs out?
bardownaint that sucks 😕
That car is so freaking beautiful.
One of the prettiest ever
yes ,but why start messing with a new motor and gearbox and all that shit ? Cant the americans leave cars as originals as possible ??
*10 over the speed limit* "Gosh Matt, you're scaring me!" Hahahaha, this dude is a craftsman, but he sure isn't a passenger
CommandoPG i bet he NEVER rides passenger in his cars. Perspective is a big factor
Matt did a review of my car. In person, he is going WAY faster than it appears in video. I reset my top speed gauge before and we ended up doing 121mph on Angeles Forest Highway. The video didn't appear nearly that fast. I do the canyons 2-3x a week. But had never rode as a passenger before. Completely different from being a driver to riding with a stranger going that fast.
Cool. What car Kenneth!?
Scares the crap outta me being a passenger. I ghost break all the time
Yeah I figure he pushes the car either as hard as it will go or as hard as the road allows. I'm fine as a passenger if I trust the driver - don't really feel like Matt is a stranger after watching him do so many one-takes over the years, and he's clearly a better driver than I am - so I think I'd be OK.
This guy deserves a medal. Thank you for making awesome stuff. I want this!
I love how this guy is freaking out, it's funny.
And they were barely moving.
That motorcycle engine powered honda was one of my favorite One Takes. Sooooo good!
I think it's a big mistake to end the series. What other show is like this?
Yeah, big mistake. He should keep the series and just feature really special cars.
Everyone knows it's a mistake. But it's not up to us.
William Henrickson .... He can't sustain it. He's a business man as much as a car guy. Be thankful he created all the episodes he has.
I hope someone else takes up the reins tbh, and not RCR cause I like what they do, which is pretty different from the onetakes.
Just seems like a win, win for everyone involved, for Matt, the viewers, the car owners, advertisers.
SWEET!!! My cousin, back in the late ‘70s, took one of these Volvo P1800’s, removed the 1.8L 4-cyl and swapped in a Buick 3800 V6. It was *so* fast. Then, like with many project cars, it broke down, and he kind of let it go... It’s still sitting in his garage to this day... Wish he’d get it back on the road.
not only does this car move, it looks amazing. One of the coolest one takes ive ever seen.Such a bizarre swap, very retro car with a very modern and also turbo engine. So cool.Love the rear fenders on this.Or quarter panels whatever.lol
I really enjoyed the series. Thanks for featuring this car! Very nice updating of a 60s GT. “...not TOO much power...” keeping a balance is what makes this integration a success.
Well good way to go. On a volvo 1800.
I had a 1972 1800. It was done up with all the period correct "mods" for the time.
Truly an underrated gem.
Miss that car sooo much......
I think it would be cooler to put in a modern Volvo 5 cylinder, or just kept it stock. The B18 is a pretty cool engine.
And one of the most reliable engines of all time :)
A red top b230ft if it fit
SgtStinger k20 rwd or notin
It's a Renault Modular 5 Banger....that also comes in 3 Cylinder, 4 Cylinder, and the Inline 6 version.....not a Volvo engine at all. Volvo Diesel badged passenger cars, the Diesels are sourced from either Mazda or Peugeot depending on the Model. That 5 Pot has a bad reputation of grinding/tearing away the Timing-Belt teeth causing catastrophic engine damage in as little as 30,000+ mile intervals...well below the Industry Standard of 10 years or 75,000-100,000 mile intervals for an interference engine.
That POS I6 was available in North America on the "old-school" 240/700 Series rear drives in straight diesel and for money....turbo on the then 700 Series. The I6 was based on the same Modular VW-Audi 4 and 5 Pot which were notorious for "running away" when they got hot>> until self-destruction, and if one was lucky not to have a runaway VW Diesel, a result of shoddy Foundry-Metallurgy.... Cracked blocks, broken cams/cranks were the norm. And those Diesels like to Shred Timing Belt Teeth too long before the recommended Interval Replacement. Recent news, VW purposely built millions of shoddy 4 Pots in Aluminum/Iron Block Form.....it's the reason Golfs/Spin-off relatives have a bad reputation of burning lots of oil....even when new.Wonder why Volvo (the Chinese) have chosen Peugeot and Mazda for Diesels? They build some of the most durable light-duty Diesels on the Globe.....no such thing as ever getting a "bad" Mazda or Peugeot Diesel.
I’m a huge Volvo guy, this p1800 is gorgeous and I love everything done to it. Great car Man 👌🏻
Gotta respect someone going a different route, ya get kits to stuff the Volvo I5 engines in old RWD Volvos, but he went for something completely different, I like it. As a Volvo owner, though just a boring 240, the P1800 is a dream car, and I love what he's done with this one, must be nice with proper IRS too. Makes me curious about the IRS kit you get for the 240.
Not really that wild... stock, with a B230F, they ain't very quick, the stock seats leave a lot to be desired, at AutoX I gotta hang on to the steering wheel or I fall out of the seat, stock suspension is boat like and also not that amazing for AutoX. :P
Is there a swedish version of Seppuku?
Just real talk, the 240 ain't an exciting car, it CAN be, if ya stuff fun parts on it. But it's a durable son of a bitch, I've gotten slight air doing AutoX, and I beat cars I had no business beating with the old brick, ya can really drive the wheels off of the thing and it'll hold together still. It ain't exciting... but it's fucking tough.
you can make a 240 handle and be "exciting" for real cheap.
some ipd parts, better diff and exhaust goes a long way.
the initial design of the 240 is oriented toward the use of the everyday driver so with improvements, it is a very successful rally car,and in its civil cloth, it is an excellent workhorse
That is really cool! The amount of work he’s got into it is ridiculous. Very cool idea. When it’s done it will be even cooler.
This car is beautiful and the wheels fit so nice. Good job, Dean!
The owner should have known that was coming. Mat DRIVES the cars. He got spooked quick.
Best run of cars ever! great work matt
That guy is the GOAT. He just builds cool stuff. It’s gonna suck when One Takes are gone. Something I watched with breakfast or lunch each day.
Absolutely love these old volvos. Had just wondered about an ecoboost swapping one this morning. Completely forget the sky/solstice cars.
Sad to see the series come to a end. Good luck in your future endeavors.
Don't stop. 😭😭
A restomod P1800 is kind of my dream car, keeping it 4cyl is kind of cool though I dream of V8 madness, just lovely.
why not a potent v6 as the one used in the Nissan 300 to 370 ZX ?
because it sounds like shit
Put a Mercedes v8 in it, keep it euro
That was a nice interview. Fun looking through all the would-be advice below too. Hope whatever you are doing now is fulfilling Matt
Probably the best looking Volvo I have ever seen. I love the way this looks 👍
More of this Matt !!! Very cool car. This show is only getting better...by the minute
Been waiting for this too long! You are a goddamn wizard Dean Williams!
What’s amazing is the engine sounds like an older one when running in this car, amazing
Didn't expect the engine to sound that cool. I would have loved to swap a Volvo 5cyl into it or something though.
That's an awesome car! One of the prettiest ever showed here!
You too have good chemistry and the car is great as well!
I never knew Volvo ever made beautiful cars. This thing is gorgeous and cool as hell.
Going to miss my wake n bake routine. Thank you Matt can't wait for the watches.
moved to LA, never had a license, at 31 years old, or a car. ended up finding my childhood cool car- a 1800es. 2 transmissions later. i found a source for period correct racing parts, and IPD. spent a stupid amount of money trying to make my 3500 lb volvo go fast. it became a 2.5 litre, and it actually beat my audi A4 off the line, till the turbo eventually kicked in. i loved that car! i would've should've tried something like this, for half the money and less over heating i suspect. great car man!
just make it easy for yourself and honda s2000 swap it lol
Wow what a nice car. Just looked at his blog looks like Dean is almost done with his project. Matt you gonna revisit this Volvo.
I've always loved the P1800. Great build!
What a wicked choice for an engine swap, very well done!
Love both cars from this gentleman. Different but in such a good way.
Mush respect to the owner. Very impressive craftmanship.
AP Royal Oak Offshore Chrono. Nice! I think it`s safe to say Matt would never be caught dead with a Vincero on his wrist...
I have expensive watches, too, but I have no problem wearing an inexpensive watch. I'd rock a Vincero. In fact if you go look at them, they really do have some classy designs; nothing ghetto-looking which is where most budget watches have gone.
Yeah or an MVMT which was his latest sponsor. I'm not a fan of those sponsors either, but if it pays the bills and allows him to do more videos, I'll happily sit (or skip...) through those ads.
True,it`s just i hate these fashion brands with a passion.
What a lovely car ! Congratulation ! I once was about to buy a 1800 in red too as i think it fits the italian styling perfectly.
I think this motor fits perfectly. especially the unique Opel 4cyl humming ;)
Reminds me of the days I spent as a kid, watching "The Saint" with Rodger Moore.
Thank you so much this will change my grandfathers mind on me getting a Volvo p1800
This guy is a wizard of fabrication and thrives way outside the box
I have been waiting for this since the Honda video. YAY!
I always pass by this guys house when I go to my friends house around the corner. I always wondered what he was doing to this Volvo! Pretty rad.
stop by and talk to him, im sure he would be happy to talk to you about it. guys with projects liked when people are interested.
I love these 1800's, very interesting direction this guy has gone with it using an Ecotec, surprised he didn't buy a new Volvo engine, keep it in the family.
Beautiful car...tnx Matt and the owner...Jay Leno also has a video testing a P1800...that’s nice too
SO clean. So very clean.
I have a 64 and it's currently in the shop getting paint, and this engine swap was exactly was my father was trying to do. I've seen this car twice and had no idea he took what my dad wanted to do and took it to 11.
Matt if you are ever in Canada hit me up I have a 5.7 Hemi with a stick in my 74 Duster it's a blast.
One of the most beautiful classic cars comming out of europe.
in that era lots of beautiful cars came out of Europe
SergeantMoetz definitely in the top ten of its era.
Wow that car looks phenomenal
What a stunning design. Old Volvos are special.
I'm liking Dean - I hope you both improve and get familiar : )
It's nice to have this story on CZcams
Gorgeous car. Love its classic lines. Strange choice of engine. Nothing against an Ecotec 2.0T, good motor, but would have been cooler if he put in a Volvo turbo 5.
ChaosphereIX yes, also alot more money.
ChaosphereIX a Volvo turbo 5 would have also be far less original as it's been done many times before.
True, it might have been done many times before, but you can't deny the sweet sound of the 5 cylinder, compared to this one. But great build so far.
He probably wanted something more reliable
and if he wanted to keep it 4 banger just get the T4 out of an old S40/V40 that has 200hp stock
Cool car, I miss my cobalt SS with the LNF. Tuned for e47 (91/e85 mix) at the time, which was the business back in 2010. Man it's need a while. It was a beast for a fwd car
Beautiful car, awesome project and cool guy!
Man I just love the shape of the old Volvos. I really enjoy old resto mods with quirky setups like these. Really it's a smart decision for an engine and trans since the ion redlines and solstice gxp that shared that engine and trans both were heavier than that Volvo and had quite decent fuel efficiency for spirited little turbos. So I'm imagining even with that tune on the engine, it probably gets great fuel economy being so light and having a modern turbo engine with much more practical gear ratios since it's not 100hp anymore and probably has like triple it's original torque lol. Great video as always Matt! Now where can I get some watches?
I did a 1960 oldest car i have buffed, original paint back to show finish :)
Original engine sounds like a sewing machine,i was impressed of the oem intake manifold design, looks like a b18c type r intake coming from 1960!
the newer ecotec are very overbuilt engines with direct injection, sodium filled valves ,vvt, forged crank and rods, oil squirter's to keep the pistons cool, its good for 500hp stock internals and with just forged pistons upgrade its good for 750hp. its even been tested up to 9,700rpm's on stock lifters. GM is using it for a test bed to field test a DOHC performance platform before GM drops the new TT 4.2L DOHC v8, beta testing on a 4 cylinder was smart because if there were any issues they show up before it becomes a premier mid-engine corvette engine.
And plastic timing chain guides to boot☹️
Worlds fastest FWD is an ecotec
im pretty sure thats not a problem on the newer 2.0L/2.5L gen3 LTG ecotec not the same as engine as the gen2 LFN also thats hardly a GM only problem Audi and BMW to name a few, plus that proves my point about working out the weak points before making it a premier v8 so GM doesn't do like Ford and do ground up redesign 3 or 4 times to get it right after the crazy dumb engineering failures like popping out spark plugs ruined that engines reputation so bad they ditched it to lose any association with it.
These generation of Ecotecs were not the test bed for the new V8 that's coming out. If anything these generation of Ecotecs were the result of Northstar platform. The current Ecotec engine line(at least in the 4 cyl capacity, because they call almost everything an "Ecotec" now) are mostly carry over DI versions of the old LE5/L61 or rebranded Daewoos(used in their rebranded Daewoo Cruze). The LNF and later updated LHK have nothing really in common with the current LTG used in the Alpha platforms other than both of them being high feature turbo 4s. Also looking down at you later defense of the plastic timing chain guides, they were really only an issue on the pre-07 cars with the L61 and LSJs. Never heard any issues with any of the VVT Ecos.
Still miss my LNF.
Steve Sharpe nice info Steve.... I love it when people make comments that are actually facts
Love the shout out to Trifecta - great dude
one of the best one so far !
Don't blame him for going to manual brakes. The stock volvo booster (at least on my 144) is massive and takes up tons of space in the engine bay, would love to swap to a manual system myself one day
The Volvo P1800 holds the record for highest mileage recorded on a vehicle. The owner of the example in question lives in the states I think and has over three million miles recorded and verified on the clock. These cars were built to last. Ive owned one and they are great classics.
I will be sorry to see these drives end as has been a most enjoyable series. As to this Volvo P1800, when I see one I immediately think of Simon Templar (played by Roger Moore) in the British TV series, "The Saint" - a series that only "The Avengers" exceeded in episodes for UK produced mystery thrillers.
one of the prettiest cars ever made I think!
The 1960s 122/1800 cars are great platforms to build/improve upon for amazing handling and performance. The #1 upgrade I would recommend for this build (assuming it still has the stock front suspension) would be using IPD’s Delrin upper control arm bushings + urethane lower control arm bushings, add in some car-specific Bilsteins, IPD springs, and IPD 1 1/8" front swaybar... coupled with some geometry tweaks: 0.32" toe-in, -2.5° camber, 0° caster. The front suspension mods alone will give the 122/1800 series (despite chassis differences) quantum handling capabilities. The 1800S I used to own had all IPD suspension upgrades in it (plus the above recommended front alignment geometries), and was supposedly good for close to 1g of cornering force, at least on paper. What I know for sure was that in my local autocross series races (I had a mild tune and was running 4.56:1 Pow-R-Lok LSD with 205/50-15 DOT tires) I was faster than 80% of the Miatas, Triumph TR6s, late60s/early70s Porsche 911s, and Sunbeam Tigers in my classification.
Measured mine on track with hoosiers on a gtech got 1.4 lateral. check my channel got a few cool videos one overtaking a Ferrari driven by an instructor
Awesome P-1800 with a modern feel.
Dang still gonna end, with all the good one takes lately I thought it was going to live on
this car is so awesome never seen it before
Thankful for the One Takes while they lasted.
Love Dean. You can he's such a perfectionist.
Beautiful build.
Beautiful P1800! Always loved the lines on those, a timeless body. I think he is bang-on with getting a “right sized” motor and power figure. About 300 I would imagine feels just right in a car of that mass. In my heavier SS sedan, 4000 lbs/415 HP is a nicely balanced pairing, 500 is probably my upper limit for “comfortable street car” at that higher mass. For a car of this Volvo’s size, you get much beyond maybe 350 and it’s gonna start getting too high strung to be comfortable as a GT car.
Note: Cobalt SS was transverse... I believe the LNF was offered longitudinally in the Kappa Twins (Sky/Solstice).
My wife has a Sky with the 2.4N/A motor, and I desperately want to bolt a supercharger on to it. 😋
Yep, LNF was transversely mounted in the Cobalt SSand HHR SS and was offered longitudinally in the Sky Redline and Solstice GXP model trims and is a riot to drive in any configuration. The 2.4N/A in your wife's Sky was offered in the Cobalt SS up until 2007, which is then got re-named Cobalt Sport. There are many turbocharged options for the 2.4 that will make traction at 70MPH+ questionable.
That might be the most beautiful car Volvo ever made...
Such a nice guy & a cool car! Props
Wow didnt know this car
Its absolutely beautiful
I love this car. Hoped tp see shots of its outside being driven.
Dude get this guy on the podcast. I'd love to hear more of his story.
Why does the footage wobble at 0:49 even with a handheld (shadow) being used? Is it a post production effect
Always hoped you'd drive an HHR SS, just for fun. At least you drove an LNF engine. :-)
How did you mount that motor with no boss to tie into on the driver side of the motor?
Those are cool cars
Now two people have told Matt to slow down. Mr. Regular and this guy.
when did mr regular do that ?
Oh Matt. Gonna miss these, please get that Alfa Montreal on your new car review segment, gotta see that.
Matt's watch game going up!! Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore..👌
The LNF turbo was rated at 260HP/260TQ (in the Pontiac Solstice GXP & Saturn Sky Redline), so I'm not sure why the owner would say it only had 110HP. With the General Motors Performance Product tune that number went up to 290HP/360TQ (manual), and was covered by the factory warranty. Many owners are pushing 350HP plus with aftermarket tunes, and a larger intercooler. Other Kappa owners go with a larger turbo and are near the 400HP on stock internals.
We race an E30 with the A20NFT in it....super fun for endurance racing.
Dude! Love this! I have a 1965
I LOVE how good it looks, and would love the entire car if it had the original driveline. My opinion aside: Going by how good he has made it look on the outside, if he manages to take that same mindset and convert it into the entiroir and the handling, it will be a bgreat car i think. We need people who go against the grain, and does it well.
If you going uphill/downhill does the gps speedo shows the right speed on the ground?
Beautiful car, love the wheels, good looking work under the hood or is it bonnet? ;-)
R.I.P. Volvo B18. Cool build though
Your gonna work out some Butts today. Pucker factor. I love it. More grip than Wildwood.
I’m working on hybrid coupe hopefully it shows up on here it has a plug in charging capabilities & motorcycle v8 with 370 hp all hooked up to a lsd & a Tesla model s transmission making around 862 hp not fully done yet still got a lot going on trying to work out the kinks
looking like the jetsons car with those lines, really nice!
